PostHey guess what I'm a massive alcoholic
by Skarjo » Wed Jan 19, 2022 8:00 am

Today I poured about 200 quids worth of booze down the sink and I'm going to my first Alcoholics Anonymous meeting tomorrow.

I genuinely don't know how some you lot do it. Like, just go for one or two drinks and then stop. I'm a very social guy who would never say it out loud but I see people in bars who just, like, won't finish their drink? They've decided they've had enough and so will just stand up and leave dinner with half a glass of wine on the table and outwardly I'm like 'Good to see you, lets do it again soon' but inwardly I'm like 'that is half a glass of wine right there what the strawberry float are you doing?'.

I've got rules and I've got strategies. I don't drink before or during work, and I have a nice cycle of shops and delivery services that I use in rotation so that no one sees me *too* regularly. I make sure to get the whiskies that come in boxes so that they can be refilled on the sly without seeing the epileptic fit that the liquid level is doing. I'm at the point now where I'm putting away usually about a bottle of whisky a day, and have done for about two years now.

strawberry floating done with it.

Admitting you have an issue is the first step on the road to dealing with it, so well done for that.

I only have the odd glass of wine (usually around christmas time), but i could have easily gone down the same road as you on many occasions (at one point i was offered something significantly more potent by someone i knew, and my mental state was so bad, i almost accepted it) so i understand how it can happen to folk.

Hope the AA meeting goes well, and that you'll soon be back on the straight and narrow.

Good on you for seeing the problem and doing something about it.

I used to drink a lot, but I've never been much of a home drinker. I love pubs and will binge drink like strawberry float, but have never felt the need to have anything other than a beer at home. And even that's rare.

Since having a kid and the pandemic, I've barely drank at all.

See, the pandemic made it so much easier to drink. Again, never during work (I'm a teacher and at least I held that line) but the lack of commute made getting on it after work so much easier.

Takes a lot of courage to admit there's an issue. Good luck with it mate.

Yeah I can see that lockdown would only add to your problem.

It sounds like we are opposites when it comes to alcohol and how we abuse it. Get help and I'll keep my fingers crossed that you can get over this.

Good luck Skarjo, it's a tough road ahead but taking that first step is the hardest of all and you've just done it. I wish you all the best.

Obviously not in the same ballpark, but I'm nearly 3 weeks into Dry January and it has made me realise quite how much I used to drink. I would never get drunk but would routinely have a number of drinks throughout the week and weekend, there was always an excuse to have one - "oh there's football on, let's have a couple of beers", "tough day at work, let's have a gin & tonic this evening" etc and now I'm going to actively fight against that sort of mindset. Drinking is only for Friday and Saturday nights, 2 drinks max per night, regardless of what it is I'm drinking.

Hey Skarjo, well done on taking the first step.

I know how difficult this can be, I've had issues with alcohol myself and battled a severe cocaine addiction.

I know you've said you've got an AA meeting tomorrow but can I recommend an international organisation called SMART, at www.smartrecovery.org that I've used? They have online sessions (audio only not video) where they go through various coping techniques and discuss personal experiences. It's really easy to get into because there is no expectation to speak and they're quite happy for people just to listen.

If you find the AA meetings abit daunting, this could be alternative.

I really appreciate that. I know that AA has a bit of a God-Bothery reputation so if I can't get on board with that it's good to know there's alternatives.

Especially knowing that Mic and Lucien are probably hiding outside with dictionaries.

Well done dude, proud of you

There's a horrible transition period when sobriety is just so boring , but hang in there and remember your drug of choice isn't a net positive to you anymore.

Good luck you got this x x x

No problem. It surprised me how god-bothery AA is, which completely put me off to be honest! And hence why I went with SMART instead.

I thought this was going to be some meme thread when I opened it!

Loads of people suffer from an addiction at some point in their life. Admitting it to a community of people you've been engaging with for 20 years must be difficult so well done on having the courage to do so. Good luck.
