Did anyone listen to this on Sunday afternoon? Apparently it's set to be a regular thing. I thought it was really interesting and in spite of coming from a non-specialist source included some really interesting and left field contributions. Was amazing to hear how the extreme technical limitations forced these musicians to be so creative. When the GoldenEye composer describes his influences it is amazing how I hadn't heard it before. There are two episodes (with a little bit of crossover) and featuring Charlie Brooker who is always enjoyable. Made me remember my childhood days playing Outrun in the Lhanbryde chip shop and Super Sidekicks on the Cal Mac ferry between Uig and Lochmaddy back when arcade machines were magical!

Listening to the Charlie Brooker one now. Thanks!

Edit - this is great, makes me very misty eyed listening to some of these classics.

I hope this becomes a permanent fixture on 6music.

Can anyone recommend a good source for game music other than YouTube? I subscribe to Amazon Music and their selection of game music is woeful.

Spotify have at least some of the Video Games Live albums.

This looks really good, I'll add it to my podcast feed.

The Mega Drive bits are great, really evocative of that time. I’m a SNES guy through and through but some of the Mega Drive tunes from that period and touched on in the podcast are sublime.

The brand new Scala Radio also has a game music show. Weekly, starting 5pm today.

Luci Holland - The Console
Composer, arranger and sound artist Luci Holland selects an hour of new, popular and emerging game scores in the UK's first weekly video game music show on national radio.

Episode 2 is out now. Some great stuff about the art of death/game over music. Really fascinating stuff. Mind blowing to think of the attention to detail in Super Mario 64 with the never ending staircase and the audio tricks employed to make it seem like the music is always rising.

Has anyone found an archive of these anywhere, I missed the first episode and the BBC don't seem to hold onto things like this for more than 5 minutes.

Seems like it's still on the BBC sounds app.

This has been really interesting, listening to the ways composers have dealt with hardware limitations, and making the music interactive and reacting to player's actions on screen.

I had the same problem. Episode 1 is back now and it says it has 30 days before expiry (possibly a few less now).

Is it actually called that? On the Sounds app it's just listed as "6 music's history of video game music"

This is quite good.

Didn't know Radiohead had their music on FIFA.
