Some of the best shows on TV are based on history. The Tudors, Band of Brothers, The kennedy's, Colditz etc, to name but a few. They don't make enough of them though, we're always left wanting more.

Seconded on Rome, just finished watching it. A shame they had to cram so much into season two rather than getting the renewal they deserved, but still - fantastic stuff.

Season two felt very off to me; not getting to see more of the North African campaign etc. Very unsatisfactory.

My favourite historical drama series was John Adams. North American history is one of my main interests, so it focusing on one of the less well known (but most important) members of the founding generation, and its relative historical accuracy, has inevitably placed it near the top of my internal favourite show list.

I hope that more historical dramas set in early North America are made.

I'd love to see one focusing on the Seven Years' War, on Montcalm and Wolfe; or the lives of a couple of soldiers in their employ during the course and aftermath of the war, ala Rome; or on soldiers involved in earlier American conflicts like King Philip's War.

A fictional drama based around a group of well-traveled Norse explorers taking on a final journey; navigating the Greenland and North American coastlines, before penetrating into the continental interior, following their exploits and interactions with natives, could be good too.

If you're that interested in historical dramas get watching subbed versions of some Korean/Japanese historical dramas. Quite a lot of them are fantastic.

Jeremy Irons looking nothing like Rodrigo Borgia has put me off looking into this.

My favorites are Mad Men, The Tudors and Battlestar Galactica (it is a prehistorical drama about the first humans)

Rome focuses on the period immediately prior to the fall of the Roman Republic and the establishment of the Roman Empire, featuring characters including Julius Caesar and his family, Mark Antony, Brutus, Cicero and other famous faces of the time. It's really very good.
