I agree that buying the product doesn't make someone a bad person, but I do think it's important to acknowledge the intrinsic support that continuing to buy the merchandise gives to both Rowling and her shitty worldview on trans rights. A lot of LGBT and trans folks of our generation were raised on her literature and felt like they'd found a place of inclusion in the world of Harry Potter, and the decision by the author to rip that apart with her words should be addressed by everyone who cares about trans rights. Unfortunately thanks to her own efforts, this is one media franchise where it's very, very difficult to separate the views of the author and any franchise media, be that the original series or any "expanded world" stuff.

It certainly is. Place would be a lot better if you took your judgemental views and strawberry floated off.

Tried that. People missed me too much.

And if your takeaway from this is "this internet user is too judgmental" then...I dunno. Read the thread again? It's a strawman, but what if JK was openly homophobic? Racist? Buying a game secondhand so you're not giving your money to the face of transphobia is the least someone can do.

I'm boycotting the game. I just don't jump down the throat of anyone who chooses not to.

I think there's probably a happy medium between condemning people for their interest in a franchise and telling each other to strawberry float off, if I'm honest. Not everyone follows the pattern of thinking that I do in regards to purchase, author, subject and visibility and that's something I need to suck up.

I think morally it's worse to buy expensive hardware made in a country committing genocide but a lot of us (including myself) are going to do that soon.

So my main issue, just here in this thread mind, is people ignoring a lot of the content. Right from the very off, JK Rowling's transphobia was invoked with most people deciding it was enough to stop them buying the game firsthand.

My issue is with those who came in here and decided it was more important to tell people they intended to buy than engaging with that issue. That's what says a lot about these folks. It's an issue they didn't even deem worth considering when deciding on their potential purchase.

We, me and you, seem to be on the same page when talking about the buying of the game so I don't understand why your first post was one telling me to strawberry float off. Like I say, all I've done is very mildly point out, and ask in one case, why people were willing to ignore the fact that by buying the game they're directly supporting the most prominent transphobe in the world. I don't think that's unwarranted.

I couldn't agree more, which is why the most I've done is call these people out rather than telling anyone to strawberry float off.

Do you? You just told Taf to strawberry float off because he stated some opinions.

I'm not a Harry Potter superfan, I enjoyed the books and the movies were ok. JK Rowling can strawberry float off though, I'm not buying this.

The wheat/chaff comment that I quoted was what triggered me. I don't mind trying to educate people but basically saying you're superior to others because you wouldn't buy a videogame is not on.

Apologies for telling you to strawberry float off. It's been a tough few days, and you got the brunt of it.

That's ok man, we've all been there. And yes that comment of mine was more than a little condescending which is my first sin when getting into the weeds on stuff like this. Should have found a way to express myself better.

My partner is really torn on this. She's the wokest person I have ever met but also the biggest Harry Potter fan.

I think it'll be a secondhand sale this end.

I understand why people would boycott the game, but what is it about the purchasing of this particular product that's more worthy of chastization and vilification than another company, brand or individual? Okay, JK Rowling is apparently a bad person, but there's sexual malpractice at Ubisoft. There's overworked employees at Rockstar. There's apparently horribly low paid staff at Activision. Various issues with the manufacturing of console products themselves, amongst others, in China. Amazon employees leaving their warehouses dead. Coffee plantations using child labour. Clothing manufacturers paying workers peanuts in the UK, never mind Kolkata. You could go on forever. Some of these issues are obviously a lot more related than others. But where on the scale do you want to plant your flag on lecturing others on what they should and shouldn't buy and from where. They're all worthy issues that need addressing of course, but in the grand scheme of things I can't get that worked up if JK Rowling's going to get a bit richer because I've bought a Harry Potter licensed video game (produced by and worked on by literally thousands). Not that I am buying it because I think Harry Potter's a load of shite!

So many people planning to buy second hand. Cue GAME marking new copies as pre-owned and charging £10 more.

Like I said in response to OR's post, this is a valid point. If everyone bought stuff strictly along their ethical lines no-one'd buy anything.

The point here with Rowling, and why I think it's something that everyone should engage with, is twofold I think.

1) No-one needs to buy this game, definitely not new
2) Rowling is a singular person with horrible views rather than a faceless corporation.

The second point there has an extra addendum that a lot of the people she's directly attacking are kids, and kids who grew up with her books which are a fable of strength through love and embracing difference. Not only are her views targeting some of the most vulnerable people out there, it feels like a huge betrayal given the HP books were so foundational to a lot of those people's upbringing.

I don't think people should be made to feel like gooseberry fool for wanting to play this game. I think her views are awful, but even if no more Harry Potter products ever got sold, she's already ridiculous rich. Me not buying this game is not going to hurt her.

I'm certainly not trying to do that. I want to play it, it looks neat.

But you can buy it secondhand. Or suck it up and not. So you're not supporting a transphobe.

That's it.
