Obviously that's a good thing but it's not good enough.

A bit like if the BNP started selling Black Lives Matter flags to fund the party.

The proceeds still ultimately line the pockets of and legitimise someone who is doing everything in her power to make trans people completely powerless. Frankly, it doesn't matter if they make these options available. The problem is, and remains, and will continue to be, the fact it's JK Rowling's franchise.

Anyone know how easy it would be to implement those changes anyway? I imagine it's not difficult to allow full customisation in a character creater so I wonder if this is just a very quick, effortless attempt by the developer to try and paint themselves as a hero for justice. You know, make themselves out as the victim of "cancel culture". "We tried so hard to be inclusive but we got cancelled" Cynical?

some members of the Hogwarts Legacy development team have fought to make the game as inclusive as possible, pushing for the character customization and even for a transgender character to be added. There was resistance from management at first, the people familiar with the project said, but currently the character customization is included in the game.

Says it all really.

Management are most likely worried it'll cost them sales with pearl clutching parents. And it probably will.

Would those parents buy a game about witchcraft in the first place?

Comparing TERFs to the type of parent who wouldn't buy the game because mAgICk!!!, or assuming they're one and the same, is part of the issue I think.

Transphobia is rife in the UK. The UK media pushes transphobic opinions regularly, protections for trans people are being rolled back and the BBC gave Joanne Rowling a strawberry floating award for her factually incorrect, scare-baiting TERF essay. These people aren't on the fringes, they're the mainstream.

Magic hating religious fanatics might be more common in the US for example, but they've never been the norm in recent years. TERFs are.

I know the moderation can be OTT but the site go to great efforts to make sure all marginalised groups feel comfortable and happy using the forum and this is very much an extension of that. They should be commended for that in my opinion.

Exactly. They're overzealous, and have made mistakes in the past, but they stand hard by principles of diversity and equality.

On ResetEra some people can be aggressive and bullying. Of course it's good to have values that support everybody including people from marginalised groups but there are people who thinks this should get them off the hook for any other behaviour, shouting people down, disrespectful, nastiness to anybody. Additionally, this fictional conversation is based on something I read there:

John: I’m out of the loop on this one, can you get me up to date on what he did to upset everyone?

Jim: Two years ago he said X to Jason. strawberry float Jason.

John: Oh god, strawberry float jason!

Jack: strawberry float Jason.

Jayden: strawberry float JASON.

Joshua: strawberry float JASON.

goes on for a page or so

I can't remember what the story was, probably Jason did deserve to be called out! I've read a few like this and it's not a meme or in joke (as far as I can tell) but it's the mentality where everybody feels they have to demonstrate they are in agreement with everybody else, that they are in compliance. Also, I see people banned for the most trivial disagreements, or new types of labels created to described alleged wrong doings that's just sounds bonkers, no fly-by cross posting in hardware forums to praise a platform because it's really a dig at people in another thread using another platform! Because it's the gaming forum you can occasionally get some good insights from the industry, but there is also a lot of abrasiveness.

If someone could find an old internet post from maybe 15 years ago that really makes him look stupid, it'd be much appreciated.

Am I the only one who finds "trans representation" actually meaning "you can mix and match body types and voices" a little jarring? If you truly want to represent trans people, acknowledgement that a female character for example is simply not cisgendered is surely the best way?

Trans people aren't a grab bag of body parts, voice tones and gender identities.

It's a box-ticking exercise for publishers to engender positive press by doing a tiny bit of effort - a bit like when Disney puts a gay kiss in an MCU or Star Wars movie, but in such a brief and meaningless way that it can easily be censored for lucrative markets.
