Be interesting to know what her involvement, if any, is in this game.

It's because Harry Potter is so closely related in the public conscious to JK Rowling herself. Most entertainment products are collaborative efforts, but being an author JK Rowling is the sole creator of the series. Despite branching out considerably the books are the core of the franchise so she is very much its public face. It's a level association that isn't matched by ethical concerns over the actions of an abstract corporation or even country. It's like how, despite being collaborative, a film will suffer more for a controversy involving its director or lead actor than one of the writers or extras. A band will suffer more if the lead singer turns out to be a terrible person as opposed to the bassist (lead singers who play bass put aside for the moment!). The product and the most visible creators behind it get conflated. I think that's just how the human brain works.

I'm sure paedos would accept trans kids, so it's fine.

they're not picky

KK wrote:I understand why people would boycott the game, but what is it about the purchasing of this particular product that's more worthy of chastization and vilification than another company, brand or individual? Okay, JK Rowling is apparently a bad person, but there's sexual malpractice at Ubisoft. There's overworked employees at Rockstar. There's apparently horribly low paid staff at Activision. Various issues with the manufacturing of console products themselves, amongst others, in China. Amazon employees leaving their warehouses dead. Coffee plantations using child labour. Clothing manufacturers paying workers peanuts in the UK, never mind Kolkata. You could go on forever. Some of these issues are obviously a lot more related than others. But where on the scale do you want to plant your flag on lecturing others on what they should and shouldn't buy and from where. They're all worthy issues that need addressing of course, but in the grand scheme of things I can't get that worked up if JK Rowling's going to get a bit richer because I've bought a Harry Potter licensed video game (produced by and worked on by literally thousands). Not that I am buying it because I think Harry Potter's a load of shite!

All true.

It's easy to ignore the horrible stuff from companies like Rockstar though. They are not on Twitter saying "we overwork people and everyone else should to!".

JK Rowling is a single person. Her money stays with her and doesn't get absorbed into a company or paid out to shareholders. And she's right there openly demonising an already demonised minority, stirring up hate.

We have little choice but to ignore a wide range of abuses from companies. It's hard to buy a phone that hasn't been made somewhere like China with all the abuses that go with it. But I wouldn't buy a product that Xi Jinping would personally make a boatload of money from.

Very little, apparently. But she'll still take her cut of the profits.

Why not?

So my main issue, just here in this thread mind, is people ignoring a lot of the content. Right from the very off, JK Rowling's transphobia was invoked with most people deciding it was enough to stop them buying the game firsthand.

My issue is with those who came in here and decided it was more important to tell people they intended to buy than engaging with that issue. That's what says a lot about these folks. It's an issue they didn't even deem worth considering when deciding on their potential purchase.

Taf, the last time we interacted was during the Xbox conference stream. I got agitated by you, not for you having a different opinion from me but by your condescending know-it-all, self-righteous smugness to me, as you know I messaged you directly about it. After reading some other comments on the forum you'd written elsewhere, I tried to better understand your situation. I had intended to message you last week to say I bear you no ill will, but I just never got around to it.

Trans issues are something that you care about strongly, and that's why you are vocal about them, and other people in the thread too. You posted a video and I watched it and thought the girl was very eloquent and succinct in the points she was making and maybe that's a small benefit to know media you shared online might extend its reach and perhaps lead to a greater awareness of issues with others.

Whilst some people came to talk about the game which is fine, some came to talk about the surrounding issues on trans people and JK Rowling and why they are boycotting the game and that's fine too. You coming and expressing why you are unhappy is one thing, attacking other people indirectly is just argumentative. There are people who have left this forum because of incidences similar to do this. What will happen if this goes on? You get more irate, others too and then like, the last incident that i remember, the Cyberpunk 2077 thread was split in two which gave you more space for some to express their concern about why the game is problematic, then the second thread died out. Is there a need to do that again? Some people just want to play the game. By all means express your own feelings but no matter how strongly you feel don't harangue others. There's a proverb 'you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.' Why not find out if there's some truth to it?

Venom, he already apologised for the wording of his earlier posts, I think we can draw a line now.

I mean, normally you can just let this sort of comment pass but...did you literally not read the rest of the thread? And if you did...why would you buy this game?

The game looks great, i love the world of HP, and nothing anyone says or does is going to change that.

I had a big post all written out but I think you're right. I've gone through why I think this is an important issue and why I think people who can ignore it are wrong.

I feel really sorry for the developers of this game. It looks great but they're having to be directly associated with someone really poisonous when that presumably just wouldn't have been the case when work on this started.

Taf, with all due respect, i really don't give a toss about Rowling's politics, or yours.

I am posting here because i wanted to discuss a great looking game, I am not here to spend my afternoon massaging your ego.

Yeah this has been in development for years but I think it was only last year or so that Rowling started her transphobic comments wasn't it? At least publicly anyway.

All I'm saying, and what you've confirmed, is that you're aware you'll be supporting a transphobe by buying this game, and that you're cool with that.

I don't know why my ego's come into it.

Back on the subject of the game itself, i'm really impressed at how you can venture beyond Hogwarts, it looks like they've built a really expansive world to explore.

It's not "Rowling's politics", it is "Rowling's bigotry"
