Having the conservatory attached to my room (garage conversion/annexe) turned into a proper room which I intend using as a lounge/cinema room so have been looking at upgrading my soundbar to a proper av receiver and speakers.

This is the current frontrunner

This 5.1 package

Slightly unsure whether I have room for/need the rear speakers though.

The satellite speakers are usable as hi-fi speakers so I could just find another use for two of them and have a 3.1 setup instead.

Definitely get the rear speakers. There's no substitute for having the sound originating from behind you. I've got a 7.1 atmos sound bar, which was bloody expensive, and the reviews would tell you it's great at reproducing the effect of rear speakers. It isn't. It's all front loaded, very good front loaded but not once have I thought the sound was behind me. Sides yes, but not behind. My £250 All in one 5.1 system from 10 years ago with separate speakers gave a better effect.

Tldr yes buy rear speakers.

+1 for 'get and use the rear speakers'.

What I would say is that package you've picked looks great, but they are standard speakers. I'd be tempted to, at the very least, get some upfiring Atmos-compatible ones. You could easily get some for the kind of money you're dropping there.

I personally would go for something like this, so at least you're not wasting that Atmos-compatible amp with regular speakers:

My main issue is that the room has an unusual layout and the rear speakers would be on either side of a doorway.

The red crosses indicate speaker placement

Yeah I'm not sure if you're going to get much of the positional audio impact at all with that layout to be honest.

Yeah, its not an ideal layout but that's what I've got to work with.

Its mainly like that to accommodate my wheelchair.

Been looking for decent quality TV unit and can safely say I won't be getting one for Oak Furniture Land.

They all look like utter arse and take ages (15 weeks for the least gooseberry fool looking ones)to be delivered due to being "Hand crafted"

Ikea can strawberry float off too.

Will you be watching/gaming from the sofa or from your Chair? If you are in the middle of the room then you will get better seperation etc, but should still be ok from the Sofa. Most of these higher end Amps come with auto tuning mics and will help balance the sound if you are primarily listening from one area.

Why is it an issue to have speakers either side of the door way?

I'll be watching from the wheelchair so I'll be in the middle of the room but anyone sitting on the sofa would obviously be outside the audio 'sweet spot'.

The rear speakers being either side of the door isn't an absolute no go but they'd be a little obtrusive when wall mounted (its an extra wide external door which would have to be fully opened to allow me to get outside so could potentially bang against one of the speakers).

Ah ok. I've got kef eggs mounted similiar and it doesn't cause an issue but I guess it comes down to the size of the speakers. Are you able to post photos? May help with coming up with alternatives etc

You can always mount the rear (context) speakers up near the ceiling but pointed down in to the centre. Not ideal but better than obstructing a door

Bought some Monitor Audio Bronze 5 floor standing Speakers and a center speaker from the same range, had my eye on them while looking at the Q Acoustics ones and they just seemed better value for an entry level setup (saw they had £250 off on hotukdeals so snapped them up).

£475 spent so far, will be paired them with a Denon AVR-X2600H and will see what they sound like before deciding whether to get a subwoofer later on.

Don't think a 5.1 setup wll be feasible sadly.

The extension isn't even finished yet :slol:

Had an email from the place I ordered the speakers from (Exceptional AV) saying they'd sold out but would offer me the newer model (priced at £569) for £369.

I said yes.
