It turns out that I don't mind it being cross-gen. I thought I didn't like the idea, then I saw this transition to gameplay and I was about as literally stunned as it's possible to be without seriously bad news being involved. Serious impressions were made in the first few seconds. And the release version will be even better as the gameplay reveal was lacking HDR!

Sony: reveal one of the most stunning games ever created

Gamers: it's alright, but what if the PS4 version is holding it back

;)

I'm just trying to imagine what they could have done without such constraints. Generational exclusives were absolutely the norm until fairly recently.

Absolutely. Gen exclusives were literally the reason to go next gen. I have no idea why releasing shitty borked versions on older platforms has gained such traction in recent years.

It's pretty clear the business sense it makes. They have a huge PS4 user base to sell to and can't meet demand on PS5, so it's not like they're holding people back from making the jump. Miles Morales sold plenty of copies on PS4 and there was nothing borked about it.

So did Cyberpunk and it was a strawberry floating trainwreck.

I'm assuming this is building towards a late 2021/Q1 2022 release by which point Sony will have presumably sorted themselves out and actually stocked the thing everyone is trying to buy, so they should be holding it up as a flagship to shift the PS5.

Maybe it's just my 90s sensibilities showing but 'HEY LOOK AT THIS strawberry floating AWESOME GAME! YOUR CURRENT CONSOLE CAN'T HANDLE THIS MUCH RAD BADASSERY, YOU'RE GONNA NEED THIS NEW CONSOLE, SO BUY ONE OR YOU'LL NEVER SEE A BOOB' is a totally valid marketing technique.

"Yea, it's gonna be on the new console and it's gonna be awesome, but we've had to bork it a bit so there's a version that works on your now 8 year old hardware but it's... fine? Yea it's fine." - Doesn't scratch the same itch.

There's a chip shortage going on the world over. It's not like console manufacturers are intentionally keeping demand low to drive panic buying... :o  :o

And anyway, the PS5 has features which will make for a next gen experience besides better graphics (improved feedback, better sound and faster loading) meaning the PS4 version won't hold those next gen features back.

Hopefully the robots have a huge bump in detail over their ps4 counterparts, along with better geometry and things like that.

Look at it this way: we've traded in genuine, but so-so, exclusives (Knack, Killzone: Shadowfall and Infamous Second Son) for genuinely good, but cross-gen games/remakes. (Demon's Souls, Spider-Man MM / Remastered and Horizon: Forbidden West.)

I get the disappointment that it's being made for PS4 as well, for this and God of War 2. Especially when Sony are, at the same time, hyping up Ratchet and Clank as being built solely for PS5 and how it wouldn't be possible on PS4. I know that's mainly down to the game making use of the SSD and general marketing hype, but still.

There's been no official confirmation either way on that.

Again, graphics are not going to be the thing being held back by cross-gen, it's gameplay where that might be more of a concern

Sony being Sony (letting devs do their thing), I honestly cannot see them putting the kibosh on a dev's ideas if they were only possible on PS5. Also, Ratchet is PS5 only and its big next gen idea is portals. My point being that devs are gonna need a little time before we see new ways of playing.

Watched the trailer/gameplay footage last night. I think it looks amazing. Game reminds me a lot of the latest Tomb Raiders but in terms of graphics, the way parts of the environment collapse, and the overall physics it looks like a substantial leap forward.

Just nice to have these sunshine and beach-laden places with crystal blue waters to explore.

For Horizon, we think we are on track to release this holiday season. But that isn’t quite certain yet, and we’re working as hard as we can to confirm that to you as soon as we can.
