This is how I do it.......

Make sure steak is at room temperature.

Lightly oil the steak on both sides.

Rub lots of pepper on it, and a bit of salt.

Get a heavy based frying pan on the heat, and leave it there till it's smoking hot.

Place steak on frying pan. Depending on size/cut, give it a minute each side.

Let it rest for a few minutes.

Eat.

If you like it cooked well done, obviously leave it on the pan longer.

I shouldn't even eat beef, but who cares?

The best method I learnt of checking its cooked is by using two spoons and effectively split the meat in the middle without cutting it ofcourse and if theres blood its not done.

I like it medium with a tiny bit of redness and this is the best way imo. Rare is only nice if its sliced thin.

There is so much fail in this whole post.. I'm worried if I read any more fail today that I might die of Failitis.

The best way to check a steak is cooked is as follows:

  • Poke your cheek - If the steak feels like your cheek, it's rare
  • Poke your Chin (the chubby bit below the lips - If the steak feels like your Chin, it's Medium.
  • Poke your forehead - If the steak feels like your forehead, it's well done.

There's also the method of pressing the thumb muscle whilst your thumb is touching another finger (Index finger = rare, pinky = well done)

  • Poke Aimee's arsehole - If the steak feels like Aimee's arsehole, it's blue.

Joking aside, there's a method of checking that involves making a ring out of your hand with different fingers (a la the ring game) and seeing how tense the muscle/tendon goes. I can't do it properly though, so I just do a minute each side max (I like it mooing).

Pretty much this although I add onions and grill instead of pan fry.

Goes well with peppercorn sauce

I know this is probably coming from left field, but a toaster works well too.

My mum does them how Jamie Oliver recommended, I think.

Cover the steak in olive oil (both sides) and season with salt and pepper. Heat the pan to quite a high heat and cook on both sides. No butter nor oil in the pan.

Timing depends on the thickness of the steak..

Edit - that's like how abcd does his, but not raw like.

Also, add a bit of creme fraiche to the pan, after cooking. Makes a delicious sauce... NOM NOM NOM.
