How do I sync a PlayStation Move controller with my PS3?

Hi. I bought a second hand PlayStation Move controller from Amazon. I've been charging it with the USB cable. When connected with USB I can use it with games. But when I disconnect it from the cable my PS3 doesn't recognise it. I'm guessing it is a syncing issue. How do I sync it or get it working without the USB?

tried it again. It worked. but regularly needs to be calibrated. I don't know if the fault is with my unit or the Move design. I blame Nintendo.
