Ive just discovered after all these years that there is an alternative way to use a can opener

The karate chop grip as I'll call it, the one I've used all my life (note the superior to Heinz branston beans :datass: ):

The flat grip I just found out about :o :

WHAT MADNESS IS THIS?!

The two compared:

Which do you use? (Bonus points if your landlord does it).

The flat grip leaves a sharp edge at the top of the can - very dangerous!

Besides, my electric opener uses the karate chop method.

The flat because why would I want to lid still attached to the can getting in the way? Plus it risks going inwards with the Karate grip and it also becomes the 2nd most dangerous household item for self mutilation only being beaten by paper.

The flat grip, mainly as the can opener I usually use doesn’t allow for the other method.

I often use the lid to drain excess liquid out of the can without losing the entire contents.

Karate chop or ring pull for me. This thread has reminded me that I need a new tin opener.

Flat is the only sensible option, you don't want the razor sharp lid still attached to the can.

Ringpull cans are obviously the best choice though.

Ring pulls are evil.

They create a false sense of security in not needing an opener and, when the ring pulls break or malfunction (which they do frequently) can leave people starving or, worse, with no other option but to use the dreaded knife and rolling-pin method.

It’s a health and safety nightmare.

I have an incredible can opener with no blade that makes a perfect lid out of the top of the tin. No sharp edges, I think it just uses witchcraft.

I think you can get cheaper knock-offs now but it's one of these:

Ring pull or karate chop. If you buy cans in a multiple pack they don’t always seem to come with ring pulls whereas individual cans seem to almost always have ring pulls.
