Have you called Virgin and had a moan? They put my price up to £59 for 350mbps, so I called them and they immediately offered me £36 instead.

Plan to do that, but I'd like a decent idea about viable alternatives before I do, because if they can't offer a decent reduction, my intention is still to cancel.

4G routers can be okay but the modem that is in them will dictate what speeds you get. Other things to watch out for is Carrier Grade NAT-ing, and performance issues with latency, loss and jitter.

Also if you are using a lot of data they will rate limit you

It might encourage me to get back onto CSGO as speed of connection (80 meg) was the reason I kept getting starched on Faceit. Might be the gaming chair too.

I am having fibre installed this week. I'm very excited to be getting some decent internet speeds! But I'm a little unsure on what installation will mean.

At the moment the router is in a cupboard under the stairs. But I understand that they will be installing an ONT inside somewhere. How accommodating are Openreach with where the ONT is placed inside the house?

I'm thinking it would be best to put it upstairs where I have my home office (sounds fancy, it's a desk in the bedroom :lol:

) so I can easily get a wired connection to my work computer. Would Openreach be ok with running a cable up the outside wall?

Edit: and while I'm thinking of this, here's a current speed test so I can compare when I get my fancy superfast internet installed.

From what I've read, they'll want to install the ONT near the entry point into the home, and they advise having 2 wall sockets nearby, one for the ONT, another for the router. Not seen anything about whether they'll install above ground floor, but I don't see why they couldn't, they must install to flats etc all the time.

I'll also be getting an ONT fitted some time soon, but by city fibre rather than open reach. Here, I can see the box in the street has been fitted to the telephone pole, and then they reach the house and run the cable down the wall. Not sure what the open reach set up by you is. Keep us posted on how yours goes.

My parents recently had their broadband upgraded and there was a box (a small-ish grey panel) attached to the front wall of their house and the fibre cable was then run from the telephone pole over to this box. A small hole was drilled so that the cable could go from this box through into their living room; the cable was then connected up to the hub box in the living room.

The installation guy was very good and asked/checked where they wanted the cable to enter the house.

I think the upstairs installation will be much easier for the engineer. There's no plug sockets near the front door, so he'd have to put a cable through into the living room. Upstairs, he'll just need a hole through the wall.

Yeah, that's like my M&Ds place; the old phone line came into the hallway (and was then run into the living room) but, with no power sockets in that area, the new fibre cable was put through a hole straight into the living room.

I'd love to upgrade to full fibre but, in my flat, I'd imagine the fibre cable would have to be run up the inside of the building (replacing the existing phone line) - probs not that difficult but there's no sign of this option being available in the foreseeable future.

Maybe call up Openreach or your broadband provider and see if the cables could be run up the outside of the building?

A flat isn't really any different to what I want (unless you're 20 floors up

) so I'll let you know if I can get the engineer to get his ladder out.

I think the centre of the flats has n area for running phone cables up and into the flats, but I dunno if fibre cables would be able to be setup the same way. I'm not a fan of outside cabling although we do have some for Sky TV (not that I've got that). I live pretty near to my parents so hopefully BTs roll-out will encompass my area soon.

Being on Virgin but also an O2 customer I get 1Tbit for £39 a month which I hit pretty often.

Now that is fast.

I was having issues with my speed and gave sky a ring to play up. They told me to turn the router and fibre box off for 10 minutes and all would be better (in other words it gave them time to call the exchange and turn the dial up). 10 minutes later I went from 300meg to 800meg.
Not bad at all. Especially as that was on wifi.

They also used www.fast.com rather than ookla, so that's probably a sham site set up by Sky, innit?

Is there any way of knowing when OpenReach plan to upgrade an area? Their website has an area which outlines some high level plans but it's not particularly helpful and the postcode checker just tells me that "full fibre" is not yet available to me - yes, I know that!

I found their estimates for when work was due to take place round here pretty gooseberry fool, but then the work was originally scheduled pre-Covid, then understandably got massively delayed, so wasn't sure if it was to do with that alone. The first notification we got was a letter from City Fibre giving us a date for a week when they would be doing work digging up our road to install, maybe a month beforehand? Do you know if anywhere near you has had new network installed lately and who by? If so, maybe check with that firm directly if they've got a better estimate.
