Pretty poor for a large city, although by that I mean Glasgow and not Carlisle which is where it seems to think I am. :dread:

If you are fibre that isn't great, but if you are on non fibre then that isn't that bad.

I'm still impressed that my 4G download and upload are essentially FTTC speeds:

The ping on my home broadband is much lower and the download is twice as fast but the upload is the same amount.

Having the worlds technological company's certainly has its ups as we're already in top 10 countries in the world for average BBspeed. I've 90 down and 20 up myself.

I'm starting to loathe the way people use average speed as evidence of general broadband access improving and the lazy journalism (hate that term but it's appropriate here) that accompanies the release of these figures. It's fantastic for those who are in an area well served by the likes of UPC and Eircom but for those in more rural areas all it does it highlight the digital divide is getting wider. Eircoms Efibre map is a pack of lies and they never get called out on it. The coverage area they try to present on the map is 100% bollocks and they know this and have produced more accurate maps for their NBP submission. On top of that the timelines presented on the maps mean nothing which has to be false advertising but they never get called out on it by Comreg. They've improved a lot as a company but they still get away with far too much.

The NBP is looking like it could finally be a sensible government backed plan to improve broadband infrastructure as it seems fairly clear that FTTH is the preferred option with the mobile operators and and WISPs not in the running. It's honestly one of the bigger reasons I reckon I'll vote for Fine Gael next year.

To be fair, that was when the phone socket needed a bit of fixing. It's usually at 5mb, still though.

What do mean the download isn't that great? What, compared to South Korea?

FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet) is capable of offering up to 25Mb/s upload speeds. It just depends on how far away you are from the fibre connection, the more copper wire between you and the cabinet that has the fibre connection the lower the speed you'll get.

Of course then you've also got whatever restrictions your ISP puts on you. For instance, I've just gone with TalkTalk superfast and I'm pretty close to the fibre connection, but because I've gone with the Medium package I think I'm only down to get 2Mb/s upload speeds.

Its always nice to have a higher number, but you've got to question if you'll actually need that kind of speed. If you are just online gaming then I think its pretty much pointless. Obviously if you are uploading large videos or hosting some kind of server you want access to when you are away then you might want higher speeds.

EDIT - In fact for gaming your ping is probably far more important than having higher upload speeds than you do.

Are those the green metal boxes you see out in streets? If so, the nearest one to me is a very short distance away from me indeed. (All of a ten second walk away, at the top of my street.)

I'd like faster U/L speeds for uploading files. Right now it's so slow that I have to leave stuff running at night, and even then it's usually only just completed when morning rolls around again.

I think so, of course your local cabinet will have to have been upgraded. If you go on a website put in your details and they say you can get fibre this is probably what you'll be getting (unless you live in an area that you can get Virgin cable, in which case you can do even better).

Tested earlier and I was getting the full 38Mb/s hopefully that'll be the case when it settles down, pretty big jump over what I had before anyway...

Got my upgrade from VM today....

Very nice and all, but I wish they'd sort their strawberry floating upload speeds out.
