The last time I posted on this thread, we had just moved into a house in a village which had pitiful broadband. Now, thanks to our village being upgraded by a rural FTTP provider, our typical speeds are more like this:

Yeah, it ain't cheap - £75 per month (there are cheaper packages with lower speeds) - but it's so worth it when those big game updates need doing, and there's plenty of bandwidth to go round all the gadgets in the house.

I apparently live in the fastest broadband area in the country - Tamworth where the average is 30.4 Mb/s

Currently get about 6Mbps, but Im petitioning hard to get my house added to the rural fibre rollout plan. Currently its going to come within 300m of my house but not actually go to my house. Hopefully me telling them Ill actually give them money every month will convince them to make the slight detour up my road. Well see what happens.

TIL that in South Africa,2009, an employee of an IT company complained that data would get transferred faster by carrier pigeon than on ASDL. Winston the pigeon armed with 4gb memory stick took two hours to carry the data 60 miles - in the same time the ADSL had sent 4% of the data.

In the late 90's to early 2000's I was big into IRC in channels where most people ran personal FTPs. I was stuck on dialup because DSL was garbage in my town and never worked. Cable was new-ish and prohibitively expensive. In utter frustration with endless downloads and repeated disconnects I went out, bought the largest hard drive I could afford and mailed it to a buddy of mine with return shipping. Took a little over a week to get an absolutely packed hard drive back with data it would have taken me six months to download otherwise.
Worth mentioning that he padded out the empty space with obese fetish porn. We always thought he was joking about that. He was not joking about that.

I would rather have a better upload but it doesn't seem Virgin are that bothered with it.
