With the recent closures, what is shopping in town going to look like in 5-10 years?

I imagine it will mainly be clothes shops, bargain stores/hardware and pubs, with 1 or 2 game/video stores.

Will it be better than it was 5 years ago?

That would be awful. I like to leave the flat every so often to do my shopping.

The charity shops might stick around too, and strangely bookies still seem to be doing a roaring trade, there were a couple of new ones opening up last week in my old neck of the woods. I'm going to open up some niche store selling comic books, indie records and surplus pornography.

Some things just don't work that well when shopping on the 'net. Clothes, for example, or other things you want a good look at first, such as hardware or tools. Ornaments. Art.

There will be shops, but the areas they cover will be greatly reduced in both size and scope.

Just heard a news report on how well pawn shops are doing these days, too.

I agree, eventually shopping will just be from the internet.

So the general consensus so far is bookmakers, charity shops, pubs, pawn shops and one big strawberry float off Tesco?

Sounds like Stoke. And that's a little bit depressing,

That's depressing. I hate the idea of spending every waking moment in my flat, never needing to leave. The internet is making people lazy.

Unless the Royal Mail manages to offer same day delivery for a cheap price, it isn't going to happen.

We live in an age of convience, yes. But we also like the ability to go and get something here and now

At the rate pubs are closing down I wouldn't expect many of those to remain on the high street. Unless Tesco branch out into pubs...

The high street will always exist in one form or another as some people will always prefer the act of shopping in real shops. Just wandering round a shopping centre browsing and spending is much more fun than being online.

In Wimbledon and Tooting a shed load of shops have closed down.

Amusement under late capitalism is the prolongation of work.

I predict flying cars and rings on everyone's shoulders, who are all wearing silver and talking about going to the Moon for the weekend.

Maybe that's just me.

I predict that health nazi's and the MPAA will have banned the internet to make people fitter and stop pirating. So the high street will be in it's second golden age.
