I've been here a year and a half although I moved departments about 6 months ago and I'm already looking to move on.

I work as a recruiter and can advise that the average tenure for someone to spend in the UK in a business is now 3.5 years.

Obvious it depends on your goals and ambitions, but generally, it is good career practice to leave your options open and to not stay with any single business for more than 7 years - particularly if it is in the same role. There's a fine balance to be found, as no one like a jumpy CV, but you will benefit from demonstrating you can work with different people/products effectively.

The exception to this would be if your benefits/equity are unmatchable elsewhere. For example, civil servants or those who work for start ups.

In answer to the question for myself, 1.5 years, having spent 4 at the last company, which was my first job.

If you move upwards within the same organisation then it's not a problem, but if I see someone in the same position for more than about 3-4 years I'm already angling to put their application in the bin.

10 years come May 19.

Way too long.

My 9.5 years has seen me in 4 different posts moving upwards each time so I guess I'm ok.

A recruiter advising people to move jobs regularly?

I'm coming up to four years at my current place (two positions) which is the longest I've been at one company. Was made redundant at previous two places after about eighteen months.

Even if most people move after that kind of tenure I can see that slowing down in the run up to Brexit, as people look for security in the jobs they currently have.

No offence, but I find some of the self imposed 'rules' on recruitment utterly bizarre. Like holding steadfast to a CV being two pages long or only hiring someone who went to a top 50 university if they have a degree, even if the role doesn't require a graduate. It feels like a lot of people who are looking to fill vacancies stick to these kinds of things because they can't actually work out the suitability of candidates from a CV.

Just over 18 years. I've been in several different jobs within the department but these have always been sidewards moves rather upwards (not through lack of trying). I've definitely been with the council for too long and it's taken a toll on my mental health. But I've stayed because up until the last few years the money has been relatively good, it's a steady job, being able to work part-time and supplement it with relief is an overall benefit for my mental health. Also, outside of upper management and HR, my support network there (in terms of colleagues and friends) has been amazing. I've been scared of leaving too. The council might not have been great with my mental health but I hear so many horror stories from other people that the thought of landing a job somewhere that ends up worse terrifies me.

That's all changed recently, the current round of reorganisations and the plans for the library service going forward have me extremely worried. I've found a degree I want to do, it is available through the Dept. of Lifelong Learning which streamlines everything for me. I'm in the process of trying to get my UCAS for done in time. Hopefully I'll be out by September.

Fancy finding me a job?

Been working in the same role for ten years now, mostly to have an income while I studied but I’ve had my PhD in hand since the end of June and, well, the offers aren’t rolling in yet.

I’ve been with my employer just over 13 years. Not bad for what was only ever meant to be a six month contract.

Just shy of 5 years, and my first proper job. I joined when the development team was 2 people big and now we have 3 teams, I think I've been really lucky working for a start up and I continue to benefit from it so no complaints here

Close call, Cutty, but fortunately the hundreds of hours I've spent shortlisting CVs, interviewing and assessing job applicants and going on to personally line manage them affords me confidence in consideration of this "self-imposed rule". So no offence taken!

You are absolutely correct that no one can ever fully work out the suitability of a candidate solely from their CV. Anyone claiming this ability is a liar!
