How many games have you ever regarded as your likely all-time favourite?

Super Mario Bros on NES was my first proper videogame, so that kicks things off by default. From there I'd have gone to Kickle Cubicle as my next fave. Shortly after, we got a SNES (we came to the NES late) with Donkey Kong Country, so that would be next, followed by its sequel, which I still rate extremely highly.

The first N64 game I played, and later owned, was Banjo, and that held steady as my favourite throughout that era. Weirdly, though I played OoT back then, I didn't appreciate it then anywhere near as much as I regard it now, so can't really claim to have ever considered it my favourite.

The Gamecube was the first console I got close to its launch, and I went through a few faves: Melee, then Wind Waker, then Animal Crossing. (I loved TTYD too but probably never thought of it as the favourite ahead of AC).

Though I've doubtless played better games since then (Galaxy 1 & 2, Red Dead Redemption, Odyssey, BOTW all spring to mind) I think I'd still be minded to give one of the older games as my answer when ever asked about a definitive all-time favourite. Nostalgia hits hard, I guess. Though I also feel like I could answer OoT now, if pushed; I've replayed it a few times over the years, although I suspect it may be its legacy that is enhancing my own opinion.

Anyway, that means I've had eight "favourite ever" games at various points over the years:

Super Mario Bros
Kickle Cubicle
Donkey Kong Country
Donkey Kong Country 2
Banjo Kazooie
Super Smash Bros Melee
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
Animal Crossing (GC)

How about you?

There's probably only four games I've ever described in that way and those are; Resident Evil 4, Half Life 2, Vampire Bloodlines, Disco Elysium.

I don't like picking favourites at all and there are games I've played that I'd argue are better than the above however those four games are absolute classics and I have considered them all my "favourite game(s) ever".

I have 5 games that I consider my all time favourite games.

Kirby Nightmare in dreamland is one of them. I used to have competitions with my brother to how far we could complete it. We both loved it so much! One of my exes played the original kirby game in front of us about 8 years later and me and my brother sat there saying "this is just NID, except with colour" which pissed my ex off as he was into his tech and was going mad at us about the amount of changes to the data to make the game, instead of realising we were just saying that we didnt realise NID was a remake of the original. We tried to explain this, he just kept shouting that he was right and we were wrong for even saying what we had said. He was a dickhead. That conversation still makes me laugh to this day.

Considering I'd had my GBA for a while, at 17 I was going through a break up and I wanted to get a game that would occupy my mind for a bit. So I picked up a copy of Breath of Fire 2. That game consumed me. I'd get lost on the map for hours just fighting random monsters, I loved the characters themselves. I still love that game to bits and I blame it to this day on my love for a good JRPG, more than I do pokemon.

LoZ the Minish Cap is my all time favourite Zelda game. At the time of its release, I was just a poor college student who hardly ever got to play many new games. My mate had a copy and as soon as he completed it, lent it to me. Honestly didn't want to put that game down, even after finding all the Kinstones and getting the tingle statue, cranking the machines for the figurines, I just couldn't put this gem down! Windwaker is my second favourite, but I never completed it to anywhere near the same completion rate as Minish.

Lunar Knights. Spiritual successor to the Boktai games. I played this game forever and a day. Absolutely loved it. I need to play this again at some point and hope it doesn't consume my soul again like the boktai games consume sunlight!

Animal Crossing New Horizons helped me a lot through lockdown. Man I've spent far too many hours on it. I spent my 32nd birthday mainly on that game alone seeing as I couldn't spend it like I normally do. I've met some of you guys in game and it's always been so awesome to play with you all! I don't play as much as I used to, but I still pop on and potter around Chaos. I'll probably open my gates again soon, once Ella has moved her character to her island and I've decided what I'm doing with the space she'll leave behind!

Ooh blimey, probably only four! (Not including edutainment titles on the Amstrad. :shifty: )
- Super Mario Land on Game Boy for the short point in time before I got into home consoles;
- Super Mario 64 from then until the Wii U era, when I played it on Virtual Console and was gutted that it hadn't aged perfectly like it had in my head;
- Zelda Twilight Princess for the relatively short point since then until the Switch launch;
- Zelda Breath of the Wild from then to now.
I can see BotW heading up that list for a good long time, either until Nintendo release something similarly groundbreaking (and if they do I would bet it'll be a Zelda) or until it ages.

Starting off on Amiga it was Turrican 2
SNES it went from Street Fighter 2 Turbo to Super Metroid
N64 Lyat Wars/Star fox 64
PlayStation - Castlevania Syphony of the Night
PlayStation 4 - Bloodborne
Then back to SOTN

Hard to say what my favourite game is as revisiting them often makes me change my mind. Currently I'd say it's SOTN but Elden Ring and Fire Emblem Warriors are both games I'd happily play forever.

After that it was Donkey Kong 64.

Then it was:

Now it's Super Mario Odyssey.

Majora's Mask was probably the first one that I locked in. Metal Gear Solid 3 and Final Fantasy IX both took some swings at it upon plays and replays, but I don't think until Final Fantasy XIV I would say anything overtook it.

But with Shadowbringers and Endwalker that's pretty comfortable in its spot for now.

Hmmm, in no particular order

Lemmings (Amiga)
Sonic the Hedgehog (Mega Drive)
OutRun (arcade, but honestly, I've owned it for most formats, properly obsessed with this game)
Shenmue
Shadow of the Colossus
Ico

Please do not post this in the "No Context" thread

While I’m sure I had preferences in the early days, I can only really count from the game that got me truly into games.

Final Fantasy VII opened my eyes to what games could be. Literally to this point I’d only come across whatever racing, beat em up or platformer my parents bought me or was available from the local rental shop.

Side note: I actually remember thinking in my early years a lot about that game Tom Hanks is playing in Big. Wouldn’t it be cool if a game like that actually existed where you can *think* your way to beating an enemy by selecting from options instead of having to be a better fighter than them all the time?

Anyway, I just happened to catch the Hollywood style trailer for FF7 on TV and I was blown away by the graphics, so I went and rented it. I’d never seen anything like it. I asked the guy for “it’s like, something something… seven?”, I’m handed 3 discs and I’m walking home thinking “wow, this is a significant thing” so I was already buzzing before I started it. The intro cinematic blew me away and then the first battle started and I couldn’t believe that they’d actually gone and made a game with combat like I’d always dreamed of. I didn’t have a memory card so by the time the rental was up I’d played up to Wall Market like 6 times. I asked for it for my birthday, still thinking the game was just “blow up all 8 reactors”, so when I eventually escaped from Midgar, and saw the world map, what was already the most incredible game I’d ever seen just jumped to a totally different level when I realised the scale of the thing, and it didn’t let up until it was done.

After I beat it, I convinced my dad to buy me a copy of OPM, to validate my opinion that, yes, this is the greatest game ever, and see if there would be a Final Fantasy 8. I flick to the reviews archive and I’m like “what the strawberry float is Metal Gear Solid? Some solider game? How is that better than FF7?!”. And the rest is history.

WipEout HD was the only thing that could dethrone FF7. I’d gone too far down the road of trying to emulate that first experience that all I really valued in games was the story. I was playing some amount of shite because I found the story to be vaguely interesting, but then it turns out most game stories are trash! Here comes a game that’s cool as strawberry float, flawless, and just about the gameplay, with enough of a skill ceiling to give a real sense of progression. This not only reminded me that gameplay is king, but it also was a bit of a revelation as to what difficulty brings to the experience. Re-running time attacks to perfect a line, working hard and actually achieving feats you thought were completely beyond you. This not only changed the way I play all racing games forever, but also made me realise that there were so many genres in the past I’d dismissed entirely because I couldn’t do it. But I guess I probably can if I just take the time to improve, knowing now how rewarding it is. So this got me in to PC gaming, and pushed me more towards competitive multiplayer experiences.

Rocket League took the top spot next, which is really the next logical step from WipEout, now that I think about it. Another flawless, cool game with an even higher skill ceiling. Unlike WipEout HD, which is balanced to give the leaders an advantage like you’d see in a real motorsport, Rocket League is always a level playing field, like a real sport. It’s the only game that’s ever captured that feeling of having a kickabout with your mates. And like that, you could pull off a single spectacular moment that stays with you for months. I’ve never grown bored of Rocket League at all, but I have quit it. I could play it for the rest of my life. But it’s not how I want to spend all my free time. I called it a day in favour of moving on to other experiences.

Divinity Original Sin II is the current holder of the title. I’ve never played DnD, but through cultural osmosis in my adult years I know I’d have loved it to death in my youth and it would have been a big part of my life. I don’t know anyone in real life who plays it, and I’m too old now to be looking at clubs or whatever, not that there’s any nearby (and even if there were, I’d be too far behind everyone else’s experience to really enjoy it). But DOS2 is, to me, exactly that experience. I’d tried some DnD adjacent games before, but the focus is typically on transferring it to a real time combat system with pausing than representing the turn based experience the real game has. So you could say it’s the perfect representation of DnD to someone whose only experience of DnD is through romanticised representations in pop culture. It honestly feels like you could do anything and the world, characters and story would react convincingly. Just an outstanding bit of game craft, and knowing I can go back and have a completely different experience again and again just puts it on another level.

So there you go, that’s the 4. It’d probably be 5 though, with FF14 being the new king, if only I had the free time to engage with it fully.

Ocarina of Time would definitely be on my list, problem is my list (like I imagine a lot of folks) is constantly changing as time goes by but OoT will always make the cut for me.

Work in progress

There have been many great games over the years but the ones that will always stick with me (whether I can still play them or not) are:

Enduro Racer (Master System) - this was the first game I experienced 'the zone' while playing, there was a sense of rhythm to it that was really satisfying and I was hooked

Tetris (Gameboy) - words can't express just how much I love this game, the cartridge practicably lived in the GB for several years, only getting occasionally removed to play other games (namely Wario Land).

Psycho Pinball (Megadrive) possibly the single greatest pinball game ever made, I never would have played it if it wasn't for swapping it at school in exchange for Primal Rage.

Saturn Bomberman (Saturn) - First Bomberman game I played and I immediately loved it, sadly I lost the disc a few years later and never replaced it.

Ridge Racer Type 4 (PS1) Namco at their peak, everything about this game is excellent, shame that they never made another RR game as good as it. The soundtrack :datass:

Diddy Kong Racing (N64) While I didn't really get on with the N64 or buy many games for it, this was (mostly) a joy to play, much better than Mario Kart 64 (which I played after buying a few preowned carts when I gave the N64 to my sister).

Shenmue (Dreamcast) - A true masterpiece, the graphics, setting and overall atmosphere were unlike anything else at the time, bieng able to play the arcade machines and spending Ryo's money on useless capsule toys was surprisingly addictive.

SSX Tricky (PS2) slightly off piste choice (sorry had to do it) I know but this is possibly the most fun I've ever had playing videogames as an adult.

Advance Wars (GBA) - There's many superb GBA games which I could easily stick on this list but AW was probably the game that goes me properly interested in strategy games (I'd played several before but never really got into them) It has a great balance of depth and accessibility and is easy to play in short sessions that then turn in weekend long marathons.

I often find 'favourite game ever' isn't just about a good piece of software but associated memories that go with it.

I don't think anything will ever top Secret of Mana for me. Me and my best friend spent the best part of our Easter holidays in 1996 just playing through it and finishing it together. It was such an experience being able to play it in co-op all the way through. We even had to ring up the Nintendo helpline twice when we got stuck. It's a lovely memory and something we still talk about to this day.

Phantasy Star Online comes pretty close. I never minded playing it in single player whilst in halls but once in a houseshare I could play online. I used to play with a girl my age and her little brother quite frequently and we had some god adventures. I also remember one Christmas, maybe 2003 where we both had a quiet night and just sat in the lobby chatting all night as the in-game snow fell. Videogames have this power to connect people on a level other media cannot.

Xenoblade Chronicles holds a special place. I had largely dismissed it whilst I finished Skyward Sword. But I did my back in for a week and couldn't leave the ground floor of my home as it hurt to climb the stairs. I spent the whole week ploughing through Xenoblade. I am currently on my 3rd play through despite never actually having finished it!

Lastly Forza Horizon. I had done most of the game a few times but stuck in lockdown in 2020 I found the open roads of Colorado to be utterly cathartic. I really love the cheesy festival schtick and Playground nailed it all first try. I often feel subsequent games have diluted the concept somewhat in favour of being more gamey. The original feels like a motoring festival and I used to play it every day to the point that the soundtrack is now on constant rotation in my car and my kids know the lyrics to all the songs.

Fable 2 is a game I have finished more times than I dare to count and I find the lack of a dedicated story lends the game well to actual roleplaying. I often play a different story each time I play the game, for example during my most recent run I retired as a farmer to Oakvale after the spire section. I would get up every morning, chop some wood for a neighbour and spend time with the kids or in the pub like some ye olde animal crossing. Once monster attacks got more frequent did I decided to go back out into the world and finish what I started even though I had promised my wife I had retired.

Um...

NHLPA '93
I spent a inordinate amount of time playing it for me not to consider it one of my all times favourites.

Gunstar Heroes
Great action, effects and some banging 16bit tunes.

Link's Awakening
My first taste of Nintendo goodness.

International Superstar Soccer
Best 4th gen footie game. Played it non-stop.

Ocarina of Time
Amazing that it lived up to the years of waiting and hype.

ISS '98
Best 5th gen footie game. Played it non-stop.

GoldenEye
Finally, a FPS just for us console peasants. And a bloody good one, at that.

Halo
Finally, another FPS just for us console peasants. And a bloody good one, at that.

Knights of the Old Republic
I played it so much I borked the disc.

Unreal Tournament 2004
omg what have I become?!

Half-Life 2
Hooked from the moment I saw the trailers. Another one which delivered the goods after a very long time waiting.

World of Warcraft
My first and only MMORPG. Met some lovely people, and wasted a lot of time.

Ys Origin
Not my first Ys but definitely my favourite and one of my favourite action games.

There's more but that'll do for now.
