I don't quite believe everyone's favourite game has always been so certain and only changing when it is overtaken - or at least mine certainly hasn't been like that! I'd call Link's Awakening my favourite game now, but there have been games between when I first played it and now that I would have considered my favourite at some time.

Trying to be roughly chronological:

- Duck Hunt
- Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers
- Banjo-Kazooie
- Pokemon Blue
- The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
- The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
- TimeSplitters 2
- Jak II: Renegade
- Star Wars: Battlefront II
- Metal Gear Solid 3

After that I probably settled on Link's Awakening being my unassailable favourite, although it's hard to know how I would have felt in the past!

Oh yeah, for sure. This is where I'm at with OOT. Also, I'm pretty sure I've referred to Banjo - and AC - as favourites at some point on this very forum. So I appreciate it is flexible, but only ever between a select few - I guess this thread is asking, how many are in your own personal select few?

Hmmm I think putting my top 10 games would be my favourite however, my top 5 and favourite could be different as I have Red Dead Redemption 2 in my top 10 because its a longer better made game over 1 but 1 means more to me than 2 does, so I have decided on the following:

Final Fantasy VII [PS1] 11 times played
My introduction to JRPG's which did not disappoint. Still play it to this day and whereas the Remake may look stunning this was much better even today in teams of story and imagination.

Metal Gear Solid 3 [PS2] 3 times played
A solid game that looks great and has the best story from the series.

Ocarina of Time [N64] 5 times played
Didn't play this till after the life of the N64 but when I did the gameplay and story stayed with me and it's a game I can easily pick up and play from start to finish without getting bored.

Xenoblade Chronicles [Wii] 2 times played
Just one of those games that I feel myself getting lost in. Loved having the HD remaster on the Switch as it gave me another chance to play this amazing game without having to break out my Wii.

Red Dead Redemption 1 [PS3] 3 times played
While 2 is an overall better game this one's means more to me. I like GTA games and I like westons so put them together and for me you have one of the most interesting games from the PS3 era! Yehaa

PLAY | Final Fantasy VII Rebirth [92h]
WATCH | Ted Lasso S2, HiJack S1, The Apprentice S18
RACE | Westonbirt Half (March), Chew Valley 10k (June), GNR (Sept), Cardiff Half (Oct)

I think I only ever add to my favourite games ever list, i'm not sure if I can be heartless enough to re-evaluate ones quality and remove it.

At the moment my list consists of -

Super Mario World
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
Rock Band
Disco Elysium

If I'm honest my favourite game probably shifted a few times between Mario 64's release and 2013, when I finalised my list - but I was too young and not as fond of categorising my life, so it's tough to recall! I definitely preferred Banjo-Kazooie at one point, but that was because I was a child throwing a strop: Banjo ain't as good. Then maybe OoT entered the conversation after I got a GameCube? As far as I remember, though, Mario 64 was the only game to hold onto that award for any substantial period of time.

I like this thread idea, Dan. Any chance to talk about Streets of Rage 2

Thinking back over the years there are a few standouts (dat receny bias :datass: ), although I'm sure to have missed a couple:

Streets of Rage 2
Metal Gear Solid
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
Oblivion
Skyrim
Mass Effect 2
Red Dead Redemption 2
Any of the Football Manager games, take your pick

and it's not there yet but I think by the time I finish it (it'sbeen84years.gif), Elden Ring will also be added to that list.

Chronologically:

Carrier Command
Powermonger
Super Mario 3
The Secret of Mana
Ocarina of Time
Majora's Mask
Half Life
Half Life 2
Wipeout
GTA 3
Halo
Halo 2
Halo 3
Call of Duty Modern Warfare
Gears of War
Oblivion
Bioshock
Skyrim
Battlefield 1
PUBG
DayZ
Halo Infinite

Played these games to death and at one point or another they were all I played for days/weeks/months/years on end and during these spells they were (to me) among the best games I've ever played.

I'm just about to finish Ocarina of Time on the Switch and ill be moving onto Majoras Mask. I've finished Bioshock trilogy several times over and I'm currently half way into Infinite (and after that ill start 1 again, DLC of Infinite kinda ....well if you know, you know). I've finished Half-Life 2 several times but the 30 cap kills me now.

Special shout out to some GBA classics, Golden Sun, FF Tactics Advanced, Zelda Oracle of Ages/Seasons/Minish Cap and Fire Emblem.

Probably loads given I've been gaming since the early eighties but a snapshot would almost certainly include the following

Elite - it still boggles my mind that they could fit an entire universe into a game that would squeeze into a 48k Speccy (and probably less than that on a BBC). Stunning achievement

Captive - Dungeon Master was probably the game I played the most on a 16bit machine (mostly down to the grinding you could do on one of the levels so your characters all ended up way OP'ed) but Captive took everything DM did and improved on it. I'd spend years afterwards trying to get it to play on various PCs or via emulation but it never seemed the same as when I was huddled over my ST.

Champ Man 01/02 - Not sure whether it's just a result of playing it at the perfect time when I had hours and hours free but CM (and subsequently FM) never seemed as good after 01/02. It probably is, maybe even better, but I'll never have the time to find out.

Transport Tycoon Deluxe - I yearn for a new version of this, whether on Switch or console or whatever. I know there's a way to play it via OpenTTD but I just can't be arsed to do the work. Supposed to be getting an Ayn Odin at some point, maybe that's the point where I can do it.

Monster Hunter Freedom Unite - MH4U came close to beating MHFU but my love for the PSP means it'll forever hold a place in my heart. Later ones are maybe better but they should be given the improvements that ought to have been made (some not for the better).

You may already know this, but 01/02 is the version that the online community has galvanised around. It's now easily, freely available online (the developers know, they're cool with it) and database patches are made every half season to keep the player lists up to date with real squads. It's really cool.

I'm sure it bounced around a lot incrementally when I was younger, but as an adult it's pretty nailed on that when I think of my favourite every game, my brain will jump to one of five or six games - Rock Band (probably RB4), Majora's Mask, Pokemon Gold, Resi 2, Resi 4 and Perfect Dark. I think that it'll be hard for any recent game to break the nostalgia factor that goes into those six.

Super Mario 64 was easily an 'I can't believe this is a video game' moment. At the time I never imagined anything could be better. I've played a few better games, but nothing ever felt that groundbreaking. Shenmue and Crazy Taxi all gave me similar emotions, though not on the same level. All four would still be on the same level for me.

In the 2000s it was GTA 3, Resi 4, Metroid Prime, Fallout 3 and Mass Effect 2 that blew me away and would make an eventual top 10 of all-timers for me. Since then I feel general innovation in games has slowed down, due to free-to-play models, the relatively incremental tech leaps these days and how long console cycles last. In the last 12 years I'd say only Breath of the Wild and Persona 5 became new favourites for me.

I think innovation is still going plenty, you only need to look at VR - but there's plenty more beyond that too.

My categorisation of 'favourites' change from time to time. In general, the following are staples in the 'all time favourites list. Some of these may not be the greatest games ever, but they do fall into the categories of 'fondest memories' or 'had the most fun with':

Worms (Amiga)
Lemmings (Amiga)
Lotus Turbo Challenge 2 (Amiga)
Superfrog (Amiga)
Mortal Kombat (Amiga)
Pinball Dreams / Nightmares (Amiga)
Golden Axe (Amiga)

All of the above were absolute staples on my brothers Amiga 600/1200. These were also some of the first games I ever played. So much fun was had either playing with my brothers, or sneaking shots when they were out. The Lotus Turbo Challenge 2 theme tune is permanently etched into my brain. It was essentially an Outrun ripoff and I can still remember some of the cheat codes! Although only a few of these would be considered 'classics' I can't discount the others as favourites simply due to the amount of fun I had when playing them.

Kirbys Dream Land (Gameboy)
Tetris (Gameboy)
Mortal Kombat II (Gameboy)

I was too young to really appreciate a lot of games when I was that age, since - unlike the Amiga - I didn't have my brothers to help me when I got stuck. I never got too far in Super Mario Land or Links Awakening, so I never really got to appreciate them. Kirby's Dream Land and Tetris were accessible enough and I played them both a lot. Shao Kahn in MKII was a cheating bastard, but I have many good memories of playing this on the playground with a friend, including trying to link up Gameboys for the first time for local MP.

X-Men (Arcade)
Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles (Arcade)
Revolution X ft. Aerosmith (Arcade)
Time Crisis 2 (Arcade)

Looking back, my local bowling alley had a great little arcade even though I didn't realise it at the time. It was small, but they did get some of the 'classics' in. These are a combination of great games, and some of the most fun I had playing with friends and family. Revolution X ft. Aerosmith is/was probably a subpar game, but it introduced me to Aerosmith (Get a Grip era) which was the second rock band I remember listening to after Queen. It definitely influenced me on my rock/hard/rock/metal journey

Spyro The Dragon (PS1)
Metal Gear Solid (PS1)
THPS 1+2 (PS1)
Dino Crisis 2 (PS1)
International Track & Field (PS1)
Driver (PS1)
Cool Boarders 4 (PS1)

These are my all-time favourite PS1 games. It was my first proper home console that was mine and not shared. There were likely a load of rubbish games in my catalogue at the time as well, but I have really fond memories of all of the above. IT&F gets an honourable mention as I had so much button-mashing fun playing with my brother. Dino Crisis 2 was pretty scary to my young mind from what I remember, and I'm still disappointed it has never got the remake it deserves. It was my Resident Evil. Driver still has the most frustrating first and last levesl I have ever played, but my brother helped me and it's the first game I remember fully completing. Cool Boarders 4 gets a mention since I have so many memories of coming home from school, grabbing a mini bottle of Tropical Sunny D and a chocolate mousse pot and playing until dinner. I first played it on a friends PS1, and it got me hooked on extreme sports. THPS 1 & 2 (which I got later) then sealed the deal.

Splinter Cell (Xbox)
Halo 1 & 2 (Xbox)
Burnout 3 (Xbox)
Star Wars: KOTOR (Xbox)

All time classics on the OG Xbox. Lots of fun had on Xbox Live. KOTOR was the first RPG I remember playing and it just sucked me in completely. So many play-throughs, and so many restarts when I discovered how best to min-max things! Honourable mentions for Top Spin Tennis and Rallisport Challenge 2 as I played those a lot with my brother at that time.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles (Emulated)

I never had a Mega Drive, although I was always envious of one of my school friends who had one. So I never had more than a quick shot of Sonic before this point in time. Around the time we got our first family PC I discovered MD and SNES emulation (via a classmate) who gave me the S3 ROM. So many fond memories of playing this at a very non-ergonomic desk and chair. It felt like a great achievement unlocking Super Sonic after collecting all the Chaos Emeralds from the Special Stages.

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (Gamecube)

The Wind Waker was the first Zelda game I completed. I had Links Awakening on the Gameboy but it was too hard for me at the age I had it. I loved everything about The Wind Waker, although I'm sure the sailing aspects would be frustrating if I went back and played it now.

Mario Kart: Super Circuit (GBA)

Super Circuit was the first Mario Kart game I has played, and I just loved it. I remember playing it a lot after I was supposed to have gone to bed.

World of Warcraft (PC)

WoW took up a lot of my gaming time from 2004 until a few years ago. Although I do regret spending as many hours as I did playing it, I have some of my fondest gaming memories associated with it. So much so I didn't really play a huge amount of other games in that period.

Mass Effect (Xbox 360)
Guitar Hero III (Xbox 360)
Rock Band (Xbox 360)

Lots of fun memories playing Guitar Hero and Rock Band at University with my flatmates. At the time both games reignited my passion for the guitar after a few years of not playing much. The first Mass Effect was a fantastic game, and the only one in the series that I enjoyed. Similar to KOTOR I spent so much time playing different character builds, different personalities. It was just fantastic.

Dragon Age: Origins (PC)

Just  . Everything about it. Stories, characters, combat. Unfortunately, it coincided with my third year at University which turned out to be my worst year in terms of grades. Whether Origins had anything to do with that is up for debate  (It didn't - I was just burnt out with the course that stage)

Forza Horizon 4 (Xbox One)

Quite possibly my favourite racer of all time. I had no expectations going in, but I loved every minute. This may very well come in second place behind WoW in terms of hours spent playing a single game. I generally don't like open-world games, but this one hit an amazing balance.

I'm sure I've missed a fair few which I'll add in as I remember them. It's been a fun trip down memory lane thinking about all these though.

It's funny that all my biggest gaming memories are from when I was much younger - I hadn't really appreciated that before now. I would have assumed more memories would have been from the Xbox/Gamecube era as that is definitely the period of time that I spent the most time actually playing games.

What a cracking thread - I'm enjoying reading through the (often comprehensive!) responses :-).

Omega Race (Vic-20)
Pharoah's Curse (Vic-20)
International Soccer (Commodore 64)
Kikstart (Commodore 64)
Mercenary (Commodore 64)
Kick Off (Atari STe)
Kick Off 2 (Amiga)
John Madden '92 (Mega Drive)
Goal! (Amiga)
Championship Manager '93 (Amiga)
Ridge Racer (PlayStation)
ISS Pro (PlayStation)
ISS 64 (Nintendo 64)
ISS Pro Evolution Soccer (PlayStation)
ISS Pro Evolution Soccer 2 (PlayStation)
Fallout 3 (Xbox 360)
Pro Evolution Soccer 2014 (PlayStation 3)
Mad Max (PlayStation 4)
The Last Guardian (PlayStation 4)
Pro Evolution Soccer 2017 (PlayStation 4)
Fallout 76 (PlayStation 4)

I think that's about right; at least in terms of my feeling that, at the respective times, I dang loved those games. Football games have featured strongly over the years and it's only in the past couple that I've kinda stopped playing PES. Overall, this process has confirmed my feeling that the PS4 has been my all-time favourite gaming system; I'm someone who values past times and the wonderful titles that I've played over the years but the sheer range of great games on the PS4 has been phenomenal.

I will also call out VR (in my case, PSVR) as being a stand-out moment; Orange mentioned it and personally I think of it as one of the biggest innovations that I've experienced in gaming. I wouldn't select any one VR game as being "my favourite game" but titles such as Astro Bot and Moss were amazing experiences.

Yeah, that's kind of how I feel. I clearly remember the day I finished Super Mario World and actually thought to myself "I will always love gaming and this will always be one of the best games ever". Even as I thought it I knew it would be a memory that would stick with me for my whole life. Weird how that happens when you are young.

Disco Elysium is the only game in the past 10 years or so that has made an indelible impression on me, and RDR 2 came close. I probably should have listed that one also.

A Link to the Past
Dark Souls

I'd now just group Elden Ring and Demon's Souls Remake in with Dark Souls!
