How much have you cost the NHS?

£17,989.24 apparently for me, but doesn't include 3 x operations (ingrown toenail, gall stones, gall bladder). I could add £6k for them.

About 4 times your amount.... so many over night stays with epilepsy when young plus constant epilepsy meds from 6 to now 42 before I go on to anything else..

A few hundred grand probably.

Only operations I’ve had were to correct a squint in one eye and then after a short while, an operation on the other one to make them more equal or something. No idea if that’ll cost the same as a cataract operation or not though….

Am I supposed to remember how many prescriptions, inhalers or GP appointments I’ve ever had? Is that a normal thing for a person to know?

Anyway, some blind guesses put me at about £61k cost which was initially like “wow, what a bargain” but when I plugged my salary in, I figure by retirement they’ll have cost me more than I cost them. Which when you consider the standard of care you get, is a bit of a ripoff

Somewhere around £5,000-£6,000. A broken arm in the early ‘90s is the main one for me. I got up on a table for some reason…and fell off.

I was in hospital for about 3 months, maybe 4. 8 operations which was reconstruction of my foot, bone grafts, skin grafts, physio, so many drugs. Medivac from Germany. Doctors appointments every week once discharged for a year, then every 3 months for a year after that. The list goes on and I really don't want to even guess the costs.

It costs £752 for a GP to tell me to tell me to wear a tubigrip and apply RICE principles to a sprain? What a crock of gooseberry fool, I refuse to believe it costs that much :lol:

RICE is old hat. The cool kids use POLICE (protection, optimal loading, ice, compression and elevation)

At the start of the pandemic, I told a Tory MP mate of mine that I could produce PPE. The daft sod didn't suspect a thing, even though I'm a pub landlord! I took millions from the NHS and gave them strawberry float all back.

I've always wondered where the costs come from. I know that's a bit of a daft question but I'd like to see a breakdown of, for example why it costs £1500 to have Wisdom Teeth out. The Dentist gets paid either way so labour costs are out. If the equipment used and chemicals required costs so much I'd love to see what manufacturers charge and where they get those figures from.

Im not trying to sound like it should be cheaper; I'd just like to know the breakdown of where that money is going.

There are tariffs for each procedure which each trust uses to charge the local CCG (I think that's who they charge, don't really know, but they charge SOMEONE :lol:

). There's a spreadsheet on that page I linked to with some prices. So, for instance, on p8 of that document, if a smoker gets admitted to a ward and they take up an offer of smoking cessation, the trust can charge the CCG about £100 (£400 if the patient is pregnant) for provision of that service. That price has to cover both the equipment used/given and the workforce's time to provide and administer that service. It's why trusts hate operating theatres having dead time - they're paying a surgeon, anaesthetist and scrub nurses etc to be there but they aren't going to be able to charge the CCG to pay for them!

Prices for drugs are in the British National Formulary - https://bnf.nice.org.uk/. Some of the prices are outrageous - until the other day my son was on medicine that was over £450 per bottle. It was in the top ten of most expensive things in our house and the GP once rang us up to make sure he needed it (like this was our idea and not a prescription from a consultant at Alder Hey :lol:

). Some patients with wet macular degeneration will be on intravitreal injections costing the best part of a grand, and will have racked up dozens of injections in each eye. The NHS, being an absolutely humongous customer, will obviously try to get bulk discounts on drugs to try and keep costs down.

What is the point of that calculator? There are so many things missed off (such as cancer operations and treatment) that it’s going to hugely understate many people’s received benefit. Including the contribution calculator then makes the NHS look like bad value.

And Go Compare get paid for every person they sign up to private health care.

Plus it doesn't ask for dates. Did a GP appointment in 1987 "cost" the NHS the same as one in 2023?

If I'd have done it on the NHS I would have drained out £35k, but luckily I had to get a merciless insurance company to pay for it so no great loss.

Boy, I sure hope there's no ulterior motive to an insurance price comparison site wanting to collect a load of information on how many medical procedures I've had.

Me, probably relatively little, but my son's probably cost the NHS a small fortune in just 2 years, but most of his procedures aren't selectable on there.
