New people would be good. And if they're noob-ish, then they'll be told where to go, and they probably wouldn't come back. :)

Any forum needs new blood to cover the natural wastage of people leaving. And, as Jaxley said, if we don't like them we can scare them off pretty quickly.

I've done a couple of ads in trade magazines specific to my business and the costs for 1 full page four colour tends to be £2000+. I would imagine that in consumer magazines the price would be significantly higher.

To get your webiste onto search engines, e.g. google, first have to accept it I think, that is why sometimes there is a [Google Bot] when you look in the users online section.

Or is it different with forums?

We are always going to want to attract new members - members are an asset and they are the life blood of a good forum, especially the regulars who contribute to and encourage discussion and a sense of community.

GRcade needs to find a way to reach out, get visible on the net and pull in curious, casual users who might decide, on visiting, that they like the cut of our jib and decide to register.

Whilst this will always be first and foremost a quaintly UK-centric forum, we should always be receptive and welcoming to anyone, from anywhere, who shows a responsible interest in joining the 'Cade.

Ideas, please.

Well we all know how much MHTL likes to dress up, why don't we make him a walking ad, could pull in new members while at Sainsburys buying spuds.

Has anyone written to GameCentral (or whatever it's called now) on teletext? I think that still gets a lot of 'hits'.

Someone well known on here (i.e. not me!) could try that...maybe?

Did someone also stick up posters with 'Eighthours' written on them when he was on holiday in that town?

You can submit your site to Google for it to be added to their search engine quicker or you can wait for the bots to come round and index it themselves which they're probably doing right now. It might be worth submitting the site to all the big search engines (Yahoo, Alta Vista etc) as it doesn't take very long and could be worth it.

I would suggest using Google Ad Words but that would cost a fair bit of money depending upon the keywords you use and I'm not sure what funds are like at the moment. It could also be worth just buying some adspace on a few websites and having a GRcade banner up there. Just contact a few sites that you think would pull the sort of user that would be interested in here (British entertainment users perhaps?).

Well I just uploaded this place to stumbleupon, as did Red Devil 52, so hopefully we should get some people 'stumbling' across this place soon

I suggest a competition, for all forumites, to write http://www.grcade.com on as many bank notes as they can get their grubby little mitts on, along with a unique three or four digit code. When someone comes to the site and says "I found it on a banknote", you ask them for the code and the forumite scores a point.
