PostHow often do you wash your car?
by Jenuall » Mon Jan 07, 2019 1:08 pm

Over the last few weeks I've noticed that there is a guy who lives opposite me who will thoroughly hand wash his car at least twice a week, every week. Even to the point of getting the turtle wax out and giving it a good going over ("make sure we get two coats Biff!")

Even over the Christmas break where it appeared like he drove nowhere he still went out and did it!

This got me thinking that in the last 2+ years I think I have washed my car a maximum of maybe three times, and it sure as gooseberry fool hasn't had any wax on it! I know that I should clean it more often but I cannot fathom why some people get so obsessed by doing it almost constantly. My car is also fairly ancient at this point, so there is less incentive to maintain it at a high standard I guess.

So, have often does everyone else bash out the sponge and chamois and give their equipment a good rubbing down?

I take it to the car washing service at my local garden centre about twice a year.

probably on average about every 6 weeks. It's an old car so not really going to save the paintwork now.

I'm looking at getting a brand new van soon, for work/leisure. I'll be washing that strawberry floater every week!

I used to wash my old car probably once a weekor once every other week. Now that I have a kid, not nearly often enough, maybe once every two months? Which is an issue as it's a new car and I'm sure the salt on the roads won't do it any favours. I did at least get a coat of rust protection on it last year.

Good point, kids are a factor in why I wash my car less often these days.

That said now that the kids are getting bigger I have managed to rope them into "helping" me wash it a couple of times. Judging by the quality of their work they aren't going to be getting any jobs at a professional car wash any time soon!

This thread title is getting changed, isn't it?

I wash it very thoroughly every day, usually in the shower.

Washed the family car yesterday, took it to the carwash. That was the first time in about 4 months, but I reckon it's every 6 months normally. Depends on the weather and the shame I guess.

I never wash it but my neighbour washes and hoovers both his and his wifes cars about 3-4 times a week...it's actually mental.

We just presume he hates his wife because he does it as soon as she comes home.

Either that or they're a pair of serial killers and he's cleaning up the evidence.

I get my wife to drive the dirtiest car to a visit at her parents house, my father in law then washed the car as he can't stand to see it dirty. Simples.

People going out and washing their car more than once a week is normally a sign that they hate their life.

Even once a week is a 50/50 call on if they love clean things or if they're contemplating Beachy head.

I've had this car for 5 years, it's had less washes than it has birthdays. I hoover the inside every now and again.

I only wash mine when it starts to smell funny or gets covered in too much dirt. It's so big though, takes ages to get it looking pristine for the wife.

I mean, I could change the thread title but that would remove the Scary Movie levels of subtlety that I worked hard to establish in the humour of this whole thing!

Personally the indicator I use for when I need to give mine a wash is when passers by start writing humorous messages all down the length of it whenever I leave it outside in the open.
