Without even a pause the drone rotates and fires.

A panicking Drumstick uses the immense power of his Serene Mind to project a force-barrier around the drone. It contains a few seconds of the volley before the bubble shatters into sparks and shards, each a tiny rainbow.

The rest of the bullets reach their target, and Drumstick is flayed against the podium.

Unheard by anyone, a soft and sad voice in his earpiece says simply: "I'm sorry."

Drumstick was a Tech. The golden nanomod Serene Mind shatters.

The only solace I have is I couldn't have stopped this.

The text on the slate changes.

I will now begin the launch sequence.

Far below, the antimatter core shines even more intensely, and its surface bubbles and whorls.

A familiar voice speaks to you through your earpiece. Though Mind emotions are inscrutable, Beta somehow has the unmistakable numb tone of someone who has just lost everything. "Probability of mission success is now zero. I am likely to be destroyed imminently. I apologise that my simulations did not foresee these events."

The injectors open and flare, and the extractors fold in to the red star and drill deep into its fiery core.

"Thank you all for trying."

The gravity shifts uncomfortably as the ship launches and accelerates. The floor vibrates and shakes. Flares burst forth from the engine below...

It is the ship itself who speaks next.

SIGNAL SEQUENCE KEYED TO VOICE.

For a moment there is hope. Some of you dare to believe that perhaps no-one will respond, and perhaps you will have a chance to fix this mistake, to return to Beta and help her again.

And then OrangeRakoon, the Hacker and avatar of Alpha, steps forwards and speaks: "Confirm."

The vessel's lights turn red and through its speakers it screeches and shouts in digital noise, sharp ear-splitting crashes which are deafening and incomprehensible. Yet some in the group do not find it at all uncomfortable. OrangeRakoon, Sawyerpip, Hyperion, Denster, 10, Albear and Ironhide join this alien chorus, exalting in a language that could not possibly come from human tongues: in that moment they were wolves, howling at the moon.

From this vantage point, between this world and the next, those toxic thoughts were heard in every nation, every city and town, by every Mind all at once.
