Maglev sounds great and is super fast but the technology has been in the prototype stage for decades and really isn't a good fit for the UK.
The less said about Hyperloop the better as that's a disaster waiting to happen and I can see the new systems being built in places like Dubai being a shambles which may never work and make Crossrail look like and absolute masterstroke of planning and delivery.

The UK needs trains that can upgrade our system but work with similar technology not some future tech (I know I'm normally mr future tech) that will end up being completely separate and need a whole bunch of different people to service the trains and track.

Standard high speed rail is what this system needs not maglev or hyperloop.

High Speed Rail 2 looks to be "under review" as part of the spending cuts.

https://www.theguardian.com/business/2022/oct/30/windfall-tax-increase-and-hs2-under-review-as-tories-look-to-plug-budget

“Everything will be reviewed” as the government considers ways to cut spending and plug a budget black hole, the levelling up minister has said, naming the HS2 high-speed rail project and Liz Truss’s investment zones as possible candidates for savings.

Cuts demanded by the Treasury are likely to result in delays to construction on the second stage from Birmingham to Manchester or a scaling back of the original ambitions, according to reports.

The 2B Eastern leg of HS2 has already been cut and sounds like the North of Birmingham section could be cut entirely now.

At this rate by the time it's finished and all the cuts have been introduced, HS2 is going to be running from the start of the platform at London Euston to the end of the platform....

That's not fair it'll get to Reading, let those commuter belt people into the centre.

It's ridiculous that we've spent who knows how many years and how much on trying to build HS2.

Amusement under late capitalism is the prolongation of work.

Should have been axed years ago. They've wasted billions more thanks to sunk cost fallacy.

Govt refuses to deny reports that HS2 may not run to London Euston until 2038... if at all

https://news.sky.com/story/govt-refuses-to-deny-reports-that-hs2-may-not-run-to-london-euston-until-2038-if-at-all-12796300

High-speed trains would instead stop at a new hub in Old Oak Common where commuters would continue their journeys into central London using the Elizabeth Line, according to reports.

The one bit of HS2 you'd think would be secure!

All those billions thrown at reducing the Birmingham to London time by 29 minutes, then they go and add in a detour to slow it back down.

So glad they've spent all this time digging up and relaying the roads round here, installing new bridges over the motorway, etc. for a new rail terminal that nobody will use because the adjacent Birmingham International actually runs direct to central London.

Moronic.

You are only saying this because you aren't married to a tory MP and on the board of directors for a HS2 contractor.

Politics of envy tbh

I've said it before (probably in this thread!), but for a fraction of the cost they could have given the entire country - including the most remote areas - the fastest imaginable Internet connections. It would have benefited everyone and enabled growth in new areas.

Sometimes a train to [Old Oak Common] is better than a train to [Euston].

Or on more electric charging points if that’s what they want the near future of motoring to be, more money spent on road repairs, infrastructure and so on. High speed internet for everyone would have been fantastic too. Instead, they wanted to trim train times by a bit.

I've been watching James May Our Man In Japan this past week. Wish we had trains like that.

Instead we've got clapped out old buses on rails. :datass:
