They could have spent a chunk of the money just modernising the railways we already have as well of course.

If one were to surmise that the real raison d'etre for this absurd and continuing spectacle is the transference of public wealth into private hands, you could only conclude that the entire project is going absolutely swimmingly.

I've said it before (probably in this thread!), but for a fraction of the cost they could have given the entire country - including the most remote areas - the fastest imaginable Internet connections. It would have benefited everyone and enabled growth in new areas.

Or on more electric charging points if that’s what they want the near future of motoring to be, more money spent on road repairs, infrastructure and so on. High speed internet for everyone would have been fantastic too. Instead, they wanted to trim train times by a bit.

But only for the people wealthy enough to pay the inevitably much higher fares. The whole country is subsidising the cost of establishing business-class trains.

Electric car charging is working out more expensive than petrol if you charge at peak rate.
CO2 emissions will be less though (as long as the lecky wasn't from a coal power station).

I think they're looking to increase capacity as well, can't really do that very much with the current lines.

At the moment, its just the way future car users will be forced to drove for the most part, so if they’re insistent on electric cars (before something else comes along) as the near future solution then the infrastructure needs to be improved and quickly. Obviously having enough power stations to have sufficient capacity for the potentially very high number of people wanting to charge their cars at the same time is another problem too.

Well if they barley get any new lines actually made for HS2 it’ll only improve capacity in a relatively small area of the country ;) Of course changes needed to be made at some point, just feels like they’ve wasted so much money that for a lot of people will make absolutely no difference whatsoever.

HS2 are doing some great update videos.

Already the progeress seems to be pretty decent on things like the viaducts and tunnels.

There's a reasonable amount of progress but if stuff keeps getting cut off it then it ends up not really having a wider benefit beyond the already reasonable connection to Birmingham.

Infrastructure in UK is shocking though.

It doesn't help when after the initial announcement of a new infrastructure project, it can take 10 years or more before any construction actually begins.

It's not just rail either, in 2014 it was announced that three road projects in my region would be going ahead, one started construction in late 2021 and while the other two are still slated to take place, nothing has actually been done.

Such delays also have the tendency to consign these projects to the dustbin as soon as there is a change of government.

You'll not be saying that when The Luton Dart opens and WOWS the entire planet.

strawberry floating HS2 is everywhere around where I live. Months and months (years) worth of roadworks on multiple routes within 5 miles of where I live as well as slightly further out (20-30 miles or so)

Lucky bugger :( .
I'd love to live next to a new station being built.

Sleep is for losers anyway.

Not sure we’re gaining a station. More likely it’s the rail line and huge new road changes that are going on

We had a new station built where I live a couple of years ago (not HS2), and it was great watching it get built. I've used it a few times too, because it's really handy for getting to Newcastle and Sunderland.
