With HS2 now being given the final go-ahead are you pleased or against this huge project?

I'm in the happy camp as I think the project will create lots of new jobs and when finished will be a great new piece of vital UK infrastructure and it helps that I like trains I suppose :shifty: .
I feel that spending money on public transport is always money well spent as the UK doesn't exactly have loads of space to constantly build new roads and giving people access to cheap travel is fantastic.

So, thoughts and if you are against it what other things would you have spent the estimated £100B on?

Anything that allows people from either London or "the North" to get closer to me in a short amount of time is a Bad Thing™ in my book.

It's good that they're spending public money to improve infrastructure but on the other hand where the strawberry float has £100bn come from? It's only a bloody fast rail line, isn't it? How can it cost that much? Are the trains made of gold? That's 5 times what they spent on the Channel Tunnel and 66% of the total cost of the International Space Station!

London is ok but it's soon to lose its status as capital to the mighty Luton.

In favour as long as the project isn't binned off once they've connected up Birmingham and London. Though obviously the cost is obscene, and it's sad that wildlife apparently will be impacted by this so much.

'I don't want to live near a railway line' is a nonsense excuse. I have a railway at the end of my garden and it's not even remotely an issue. In fact I'd even go as far to say I'd probably now miss it.

All the stations are being built out of Nintendium for extra durability and that stuff isn't cheap.

Depends on a bunch of factors I guess - actual distance to railway line, frequency of trains passing etc.

We have a train line relatively close to our house but it's only a local line with not that many trains using it and those that do are of the slower variety so it's not that bad. I can imagine if you are right next to a HS2 line with lots of loud high speed trains whizzing by then it might be more annoying.

I live fairly close to the London to Peterborough line so it's pretty busy and I don't think the noise is an issue. I also have the A1 about a few hundred feet away and I find it really odd getting to sleep without the sound of traffic now.

It's probably needed, and can only be a good thing as far as i see.

The UK transport infrastructure as a whole has been neglected for decades, so any new investment is most welcome.

The next big project which needs to be given the go ahead is the Stonehenge tunnel, bloody awful stretch of road that and the sooner it is fixed the better.

Completely unnecessary and a total waste of time, money, resource and conservation.

I am not against HS2 in general, but the cost does seem obscene. It’s frightening just how much it costs to build infrastructure.

Reducing journey times and increasing load capacity can only be a good thing in the long run.

The fact it won't be complete until 2040 at the earliest makes the cost all the more eye watering.

Southern and Thameslink go past my house every 6 minutes or so, probably at around 50-60mph, so there's obviously going to be a massive speed difference. Google tells me current trains max out at 92dB (while blowing a horn). HS2 is said to be "95dB where no noise mitigation is in place or 76dB where three metre noise barriers are employed, such as trees."

The big thing I guess is whether this is going to get enough people out of their cars, how much it's going to cost to travel on, and whether the boost to Birmingham and beyond comes to fruition.

You only have to look at the issues dogging the London Elizabeth Line (3 years late and over-budget) to be understandably worried however, no matter how amazing it looks. But at the same time I want us to have these advanced infrastructure projects, especially in the North.

I'm supportive of big infrastructure projects so yes happy it's going ahead.

More public spending outside of London please.

I think the concept is a great one and our transport infrastructure (particularly things like rail) has been under developed for decades, but there are plenty of reasons to be concerned.

Concept is fine, execution is the concern.

It isn't even going to the north if it only goes as far as Manchester.

The railway lines all end at Castle Black, not much we can do about that.
