The advent of nanotechnology should ensure that the earth will be protected from space debris in the future. Should dispatch a load of nanobots and let them construct engines and fuel on one side of it, then activate them and steer it off course.

Considering we would have all the money on the planet to build the space ship I feel we should go somewhere less dull than Mars. Maybe some kind of funky massive aircraft carrier (Just in case of Alien attack) swanning around the atmosphere of Jupiter.

Lovely.

We'd only end up like Shoemaker-Levy 9. :|

Holy strawberry float, is that an Escape from Jupiter reference?

Good show, sir!

Scary vid. Seemed very Hollywood though. Where does all the scorching fire come from?

I agree and I would hate to be incinerated to that music.

Peter Crisp wrote:Exactly, we have enough technologies to keep a group of several thousand people alive and in relative comfort in a bunker for long enough for the surface to once again become habitable. Not that this is a problem anyway as the black holes created by the LHC will kill us all before asteroids can.

Why not point the black hole at the asteroid?

Why couldn't we nuke it before it hit us?

That would only split it into smaller pieces.

Not really. Compare:

Being hit by four ~150 kilometre asteroids at once rather than one 600 kilometre one would probably be slightly worse. Not that it would make any practical difference, of course. Dead is dead.

But what if the people on the spaceship planting the nukes decided to commit suicide to save the Earth?

we need to construct a giant brian lara in space for just this type of thing.

But if we completely shatter it, it would burn up upon entry?

This thing's the size of a moon. I'm not sure if we have the capabilities to completely destroy something that big. Never mind launching it into space.

How far into the Earth would you have to dig to live? Although presumably no matter how far down you dug you'd be blocked in anyway.

Would you be alright if you went on a journey to the centre of the Earth?

Couldn't we just nuke the first one, then quickly nuke all the smaller bits as they break off, so in the end it's nothing more than a bit of hail.

OR

Thes black holes that they're making in a few weeks, just send a giant one up there to it sucks it away.

I should really be a scientist with amazing ideas like this. It's easy.

A nuke would only really scratch the surface of something like that. You'd need to get inside it and detonate something much more powerful than a standard nuke in order to break it up. Then you would still have pieces that themselves would need to be burrowed in to first. It probably is just about possible but giving the amount of warning we'd get after detection (a year at max) and the amount of things that could go wrong (Deep Impact anyone?) it's almost guaranteed that something like that would wipe us out if we stayed on the planet.

Red Dwarf has the answer. The White Hole episode holds our salvation.

On another note, how to make the upcoming apocalypse more entertaining.
