Ah ok, not actually got through to that final boss yet! Can't say I've noticed much wrong with the framerate, but I usually don't unless it affects the gameplay.

The main problem with the vita ports was the lack of second shoulder buttons - if only the PS2 classics could come to Switch as well!

I think it's kind of interesting that Nintendo's DS emulator existed before the console even existed (it was code named Iris before it was even Nitro, then released as DS, and they kept developing this emulator), i.e. They actually start developing their own emulators right at the very start of developing hardware and probably develop on those long before the hardware itself is complete, rather than using comparable hardware I.e. PCs etc. That's probably due to how unique their hardware infrastructures are and due to the iteration of hardware features like controls/input methods etc during product development, so that they both hardware/controls and software departments build on each other simultaneously. This also explains how Nintendo are able to consistency meet performance targets without having to "optimise" software far later on in the development lifecycle just to get it to work - their code is pretty optimal to begin with. Fascininating.

Thus, when it comes to emulated games since at least the DS etc Nintendo seem to have no trouble with this at all, even if they're selective with releases and seem to take ages to do that on different systems and at seemingly random rates of release etc. We can almost certainly expect some GameCube VC releases although it's unclear whether they started doing this before the DS I.e. The shift to weird hardware where the input method was so important they needed to emulate hardware in software to even get the games running while that was still an unknown thing.

People were a bit confused why DS games weren't available on the 3DS as VC titles but perhaps it really wasn't powerful enough due to how closely they were emulating the weird hardware there, so those ended up on Wii U. Nintendo literally develops their own emulators and then simply ports these to subsequent systems. So since the "Virtual Console" became a concept for them, they've kept doing this.

This likely means there's an internal Wii and Wii U emulator out there (indeed the WIi emulator is almost certainly running on Wii U because that has completely different hardware to the GC/Wii architecture - Wii was just an overclocked GC essentially) as well as a Switch one (!). So it will be very interesting what this looks like in the future when subsequent consoles are able to reliably support these emulators. It's clear Nintendo have VERY high standards in this respect (sure there's some display issues with gamma and such and Nintendo's insistence on a weird idea of certain art/colour reproduction, or perhaps the anti-seizure checks aspect, just reducing the brightness, but the performance is always on point with solid framerates).

We've already got a Wii U emulator though, it's called the switch.

that's really interesting about the ds emulator time frame, I didn't know that. They have an outwardly backwards retro game policy, but when they do release them they're usually pretty perfect for the very reason you mention.

The 3DS plays DS carts though doesn't it?

:shifty: I may well have 3 or 5 or 8 DS games in my 3DS cart case

I guess I meant GBA which, yeah, that doesn't make a great deal of sense. Maybe they were worried GBA games would cannibalise 3DS and DS shelf stock? :slol:

3ds games were on 3ds but only as part of the ambassador scheme. This is how I played my first metroid game, which was fusion.

Surely that's Nintendo in a nutshell though.

Look, if you join this paid for subscription exclusive club, you now have the option of buying this thing!

Yes I'm referring to the NES controllers. I suppose you can always eBay them.

I'd have to say the ambassador 3DS program was amazing though, two actual good free retail-quality games I got out of that just sharing links around here and I think I paid £117 for the 3DS XL which is strawberry floating ridiculous for a very current and good handheld at the time (and still us, although I've replaced it with a New model).

I've played AC for something like 300 hours and it was bloody free!

I only remember getting the GBA and nes games, were there free retail games too then?

I remember you got a free digital code for a first-party game if you bought and registered two other ones on Club Nintendo. I got Animal Crossing through that offer.

I don't remember that at all. I think there was something similar for Mario kart 8 on the Wii U where you got to choose another game download.

Excited to see where folks take OoT modding now. The SM64 HD stuff has been wild.

Not sure if there's enough here to do anything for OOT that's similar to the SM64 stuff sadly. Lots of the files in the leak are empty apparently

There's a beta dungeon running to a degree. Most of it is just working out clues from file names really.

There's definitely some cool OOT stuff and apparently we're only 5-10% through all the leaks so there might be more in there somewhere. So far though it seems most of the actual source code has been blanked out sadly.

Yeah there's definitely plenty of cool stuff coming out! Early Kokiri Forest looks cool, wonder if they originally wanted more areas to be this large as a single space:
