PostI Love You, But You're Dead - Mockmaster wins!
by Herdanos » Tue Mar 18, 2014 3:24 pm

"I Love You, But You're Dead."

These six simple words are they keys to victory in this game of cunning and cold-blooded killing.

How Does It Work?

The game takes place across the entire forum.

Within the next thirty minutes, I will PM you the name of your first target. This person is the person you'll need to start paying closer attention to, because your goal is to kill them.

However - someone else will have been PM'd your name. You won't know who, but someone out there wants to kill you - and chances are, you won't figure out who this killer is until it's too late.

How Do I Kill?

It's really very easy.

All you have to do is find a post by your target, and then post the first reply to that post in the same thread. This post can be anywhere on the forum, in any thread, at any time, and the actual content of the post can be anything you like*. However, three rules apply.

As mentioned, yours must be the first reply to your target's post.
You must also make the post within ten minutes of your target's post. If their post is at 12:00pm and yours is at 12:10pm, then it's a kill. 12:11pm? Too late.
Finally, the subject line of your post must read "I Love You, But You're Dead."

Meet these three conditions and you've got blood on your hands. Let me know (PM or thread) so that I can update the OP. Contact your victim and ask the name of their target - because that's your next target.

The game is won when you kill the person seeking to kill you - i.e. when you're the last man standing.

*It doesn't have to be on topic - but those are the game rules, not the forum rules. While I'm not interested in the content of the actual post, that's not to say you have free reign to post whatever you like. Forum rules still apply.

How Can I Avoid A Killing?

There are plenty of tactics you could employ to avoid the attention of your would-be killer, and I'm sure you'll be thinking of some even now. However, there is one cast-iron way to avoid a killing.

If your would-be killer posts after you with a legit kill, you can negate the kill with a post of your own. However, again, three rules apply.

Yours must be the first reply to your killer's post.
You must make the post within one minute of your killer's post. If their post is at 5:00am and yours is at 5:01am, then you're safe. 5:02? You're a stiff already.
Finally, the subject line of your post must read "Not Today, Baby."

This post will be immune to a killing i.e. your would-be killer can't follow up this post with a kill post, lest we get caught in an endless cycle and ruin the forum through spamming.

Some Examples

Let's say I'm playing the game, and StayDead is too. I don't know it yet, but I'm StayDead's next target. I decide to make a thread about baking.

Image

StayDead's post is the first reply to mine, is within ten minutes of my post, and has the appropriate subject line. I'm a dead man.

However, regardless of how quick he is, his kill doesn't count if someone else beats him to the first reply:

Image

In this case, I've been saved by sheer luck. If I notice StayDead's post, then I might realise he's after my blood, and think twice about posting near him again.

However, if Albear hadn't come to my rescue, I can still survive so long as I notice StayDead's post in time.

Image

By posting within one minute of StayDead's kill post, and with the correct subject line, I have dodged the proverbial bullet - and, fortunately for me, no-one has posted before me to prevent me from being the first reply.

What Do I Do If I Die?

Accept it graciously. Tell your killer the name of your target. Don't tell anyone else. It will spoil the game for other people.
(Unless your killer is asking you to hand the info over in-thread, in public, and is happy for you to do so.
It works like this: the identity of one's target is the confidential information of the killer and the killer alone. It's their place to disclose this information, not yours - they're not your target anymore, you're out of the game.)

Can I stop you / police this? Not really. Please don't be a dick. Blabbing won't break the game for anyone else. It will just make it less fun for those still capable of winning and you'll look a bit silly.

What Do I Do If I Kill?

Let me know so that I can verify the kill and update the OP. If your victim is not playing ball, and won't tell you the name of their (your new) target, contact me so that I can give you this information. If you think they're feeding you a dud, let me know and I can verify whether they're telling the truth or not. (If you kill your target and they go offline I can give you the name too. PM me.)

Please bear in mind that I will not accept any kill posts that have been edited i.e. have the text stating 'last edited by... edited x times in total' at the bottom.

Why?

Because then it would be possible to have an entirely inoncuous conversation with your target, without giving yourself away, and then revisit the thread later and edit one of your posts so that the subject line turns said post into a legit kill. So as to prevent anyone trying this underhand method, any kill or survival post with the edit text showing will be void. Get it right first time. Mod squad: I'm aware the edit text doesn't show when you modify your own posts. All I can ask is that you play fair and not abuse this potential advantage.

I Quite Like My Target. Can I Kill Someone Else?

No. The only person you can target, is your target. And please don't fake kill other players just for a 'laugh'. They probably won't think it funny that you've tricked them into giving you the name of their target. If you do this, I'll have no choice but to disqualify you.

Can I Brag / Death Post / Name My Target?

Sure. If you die, you're out of the game and cannot win, and the only rule I'll ask of you is for you not to reveal who your target was. Feel free to post in the thread, or play along with others, or be part of their strategies, etc. Bragging about kills is fine too, although it might make it all the sweeter for your own killer once you yourself become a victim (if you happen to meet such a fate). Feel free to openly name your target, too, although quite why you'd do so is beyond me.

Why Don't I Just Hide?

Because you can't. You must make a minimum of fifteen posts a day. I will be checking. If you don't do this, I will kick you out of the game and inform your would-be killer of your current target (i.e. their replacement target).

You cannot make kills in this thread. So feel free to talk about the game here and post in safety. However, posts in this thread do not count towards your fifteen daily posts.

So Who Wins?

The last person standing. It doesn't matter how many kills you make - so long as you don't get killed. Theoretically, you could win the game with just one kill, so long as the person you kill kills everyone else, or at least kills the killer who killed everyone else, and so on.

When Do We Start?

The game has started. However, tonight (Thursday night) is entirely optional - you don't have to post, I will not be expecting fifteen posts from you between now and midnight. If you post and get killed, then it will count, but I will not be policing the fifteen posts rule until tomorrow (Friday).

Some Other Rules

1cmanny1 wrote:If I post a reply right after my target, but my subject line doesn't say the required phrase, but the target freaks out and posts the "Not today baby" subject, could I then kill them on that post?

Technically, yes - this would be absolutely fine (because otherwise everyone would be able to 'protect' all their posts by putting "Not Today, Baby" in the post subject every time, thus preventing a following kill post). However, to stop people from abusing this, if your post above the invalid "Not Today, Baby" post has been edited, then I will not accept the kill post that follows as legitimate - because that suggests that you have changed the post subject of your initial post to change it from a kill post to a regular post, in order to give yourself a second attempt.

A day is midnight to midnight, GMT. If you're not in the UK, I won't be making concessions to your timezone when I check how many posts you've made. I don't care if you make enough posts within the 24 hours that constitutes a day wherever you are in the world - if you don't make the 15 between 12:00am and 12:00am GMT then you're out.

The time shown on your post by the forum is the only time I'm interested in. It doesn't matter what time your PC clock read when you hit submit.

Question: can I double post after a kill post so as to prevent my target from being first reply and thus having a chance of getting a survival post in? Answer: no.

Moderators cannot make kills on posts in locked threads / threads they are about to lock. I'm not telling you how to moderate (of course) but if your target is breaking the rules and you're going to lock a thread they're posting in, you can't make your lock post a kill post and deny them the opportunity to survive.

If we reach the final two players and neither has a legit kill on the other within 48 hours of the previous legit kill, I retain the right to declare a draw. (Of course, the two players are free to ignore me and continue playing as long as they see fit, but they would forfeit any chance of me judging in the event of a questionable kill.)

I'm not bothered about spelling and grammar. Don't come crying to me that your killer's post didn't count because they forgot the apostrophe in "You're". Likewise, if you're a lazy sod and only bother to mash "ded" as the subject line for your kill post, then I might have less sympathy for you and side with your would-be victim. It's typing and it's easy. Just do it.

In any other matters or disputes that may arise that haven't been covered here, I will make the final decision as to whether a kill / save is legit or not, or whether or not the rules of the game have been broken.

Let the game begin - good luck, and happy killing!

I do not in any way endorse or encourage killing IRL. Killing is bad, m'kay.

Fancy yourself as a stone-cold killer? Got eyes in the back of your head? Reckon you'd be a master at taking down your enemies one by one? Maybe you should play...

I LOVE YOU, BUT YOU'RE DEAD

Sign-ups close 4pm GMT on Thursday 20th March.

Want to play? Just say so in this thread.

You have 48 hours.

Don't want to sign up without more information? Not sure whether you can commit?

Without giving away too much at this stage: the game isn't a massive commitment in terms of time, but there will be a minimum-posts-per-day rule so as to prevent people from protecting themselves through hiding. It won't be asking the earth of you though. If you're a regular poster you'll probably be able to cut back considerably and still meet the daily target. The length of the game will depend on the skill of the people playing it - it could be over within an hour, it could last for weeks, although it's unlikely to involve too many people for that length of time. It all depends on how efficient GRcade's members are at killing, and how adept they are at hiding. I'm anticipating a Thursday night kick-off, although if you can't make this you'll have at least a day to get involved without getting booted out for inactivity. I'll say no more...

Despite not running the game, DML arranged to have me thrown out of the last game because somebody else cheated/didn’t follow the rules. I am still bitter enough to not want to play any games he is involved in.

He isn't "involved" with the running of this game. Like I said I'm the only person doing that. However I certainly wouldn't have a problem with him playing, anyone and everyone is welcome to sign up. If you're saying you're only playing if DML isn't then that's your decision but I'm certainly not going to handicap anyone else's entry based upon someone's desire not to play with a certain person.

I think you are getting the wrong end of the stick. While I wouldn’t join a game that DML was running or involved in the running of (and in those cases I simply wouldn’t post), I have no problems with playing a game that he is also playing.

My posts were aimed at winding DML up rather than making demands on how your game should be run. Forget I said anything.
