One thing that helps me is cutting out dairy as much as possible for the period it's happening. It's awful and I feel your pain dude. Hope you get better soon.

My partner has occasional problems. Stress is an important factor, but you keeping a note of what you eat and when you feel worse is important. We cut the amount of onion and garlic in our food and started to cook them for longer, cooking vegetables well, she avoids lactose in anything other than small amounts, lots of bread is bad, lots of red meat is bad...

It seems that cutting a few things out and eating other things in moderation helps, but if she is stressed it might just flare up anyway. :simper:

I don't have any issues, but what upsets my stomach is too much bread, too many potatoes (baked/chips whatever), too many vegetables/fruit, even just eating something at the wrong time of the day. What does help is a strong coffee in the morning, works its magic almost instantly. :datass:

I'm almost certain I have a diagnosable problem but it hasn't bothered me enough to go to the doctors about it yet. Really foul, pits of hell, smelling farts and gooseberry fools like full tubs of half melted ice cream all the time but I can deal with it for now.

The below may or may not help. Frustratingly, it's different for everyone.

Be boring - or to use the medical term "regular". Variety can be a killer. Eating the same breakfast, at the same time, with the same drink, every day might seem dull to begin with - but if it prevents the problem it may be worth doing.

If you can extend this to other meals, it does help - but breakfast is the biggie as you'll not have been eating / digesting anything overnight. What you eat first "sets the tone" for the day to come.

Relax. Easier said than done. But spending loads of time going to the loo can be really stressful... and the stress can result in you going to the loo more. Try to break the cycle. Take your time. Take a book / magazine / portable games console.

Plenty will advise to eat little and often, but that doesn't work for everyone. Instead think about the consistency of the food and drink you consume, and the order in which you consume it. How will your body break down what you put in and what will that look like on the other side? Three big, stodgy meals isn't impossible - so long as the stodge is good for you and you're (for want of a better word) lubricating the process with what you eat / drink and between. Caffeinated drinks can help (but not for everyone). Avoid carbonated drinks. Don't rush your eating.

Be tactical with pairings. Do spicy foods cause you problems? Citrus fruits / drinks? Pair with something you know is "safe" so it all goes down together nicely.

Quality of ingredients. Consider it. It can go either way. Plainer can often mean more processed, but not always. Plainer might be better; less processed might be better. It's all individual to you. What kind of bread do you eat, if you eat bread at all? How does it make you feel when you do? What about pasta / rice / other carbs?

Anything that you know is high in fibre should be considered accordingly. Remember, your body doesn't process this stuff in the same way as most people's bodies, and the producer of the food hasn't necessarily considered your needs when creating / marketing the product. So for Joe E. Regular, starting the day with a bowl of high fibre cereal might be just the thing. But if you're already "too" regular with the ol' bathroom breaks, deliberately consuming something designed to speed up the process (potentially as your first meal of the day!) might have too significant an impact to bear, particularly if consumed with milk or a milk substitute.

Drink water. Lots and lots of plain cold water. Sometimes a warm water (half boiled, half cold - avoid warm tap water) can "assist" if you're already caffeinated enough.

Booze bloats. Approach selectively.

My understanding is that Metamucil is in an elite category for addressing these issues. But you need to use it daily.

Peppermint oil capsules from Holland and Barrett, they are a life saver.

Start necking two in the morning and two in the evening when I feel the telltale sign of a flare up and it keeps it in check and it doesn't do the demolition on my bowel like I used to get.

Currently waiting for my Colonoscopy in June.
Had a sigmoidoscopy last month but the doctor said my rectum looked pretty healthy and so my colonoscopy probably will come back blank. He suspects IBS.

But dude. Honestly the peppermint oil capsules have taken me from a week long flare up every other month to none in four months.

i tried the peppermint ones and they did nothing for me sadly, though i suppose at this point no harm in trying again

ive had a colonoscopy, two endoscopies, biopsies top and bottom, and the scan where they inflate a balloon inside your arse, so no stranger to the exploration game

Colonoscopy? My GP just said I had IBS based on my symptoms that I gave him and this was about 10 years ago. Was I meant to go through something more serious? I mean I know for sure it's IBS but I feel glad I didn't have to go through anything like that.
