It's been rumoured for quite some time that Infinity Ward will develop Call of Duty 6, taking back the franchise reigns again after Treyarch developed Call of Duty: World at War. Fans will be pleased to hear then that Activision Blizzard has confirmed this to be true at an Analyst Day.

With that settled we're now left wondering when we'll see the game. Over the past few years Treyarch and Infinity Ward have released a game a piece every two years, meaning we've had a new CoD game every year since Call of Duty 2 in 2005. Activision Blizzard CEO Mike Griffith reportedly mentioned both a 2009 and 2010 release date for the game at the event, suggesting that we might be in for a wait after the release of World at War.

We've contacted Activision Blizzard for clarification and will bring you an update as soon as possible.

This news is about as shocking as dropping a toaster into an empty bath after a power cut.

But they sleep on a bed of money, so it's hardly surprising they're not exactly keen to give it up.

Just a quick correction, I'm pretty sure from CoD4 onwards the only numberd CoD games will be made by Infinity Ward, World at War is not CoD5 and therefore the next IW CoD will be CoD5 not 6.

I know Call Of Duty is great game and all that, but why can't they just move onto new IP? I feel Call of Duty 4 was good enough, I can't see any reason to improve it other than fix the respawning rubbishness.

But, as long as they can milk the money...they'll keep doing it. Shame, I would love to see IW to make something new. Maybe even get Activison to make them do James Bond 007 FPS game.

This is news? I thought it was common knowledge that Treyarch and IW were doing alternate CoD games - CoD5 for Trey in 2008, 6 for IW in 2009, 7 for Trey in 2010, 8 for IW in 2011 etcetera.

Tryarch won't be making any numbered CoD games.

Trouble is that's in the realms of F.E.A.R or Frontlines, Halo or Timeshift etc etc. i.e. been done before.

Yeah, but I'd love to see Infinity Ward apply their skill in set pieces to something more futuristic rather than putting out another Modern Warfare or WW2 game. I also prefer sci-fi settings.

Yeah, I know what you're saying. But what the hell is left to seperate them from (like anung said) space marines?

Like I said, Vietnam hasn't been tapped that often, especially next gen.

They could go the Warhammer 40K Imperial Guard route, with lots of expendable infantry and big futuristic vehicles. Infinity Ward are great at creating a sense of scale, something I often feel is missing from other sci-fi shooters. Imagine something like that Halo 3 ad with the miniatures, but in a game.

Why announce this now? I mean CoD5 is still in development.
