Thread title is great:

Jawa stargate log 2451
Loss of propulsion, unable to correct course
Hurtling directly towards a sun, incineration likely upon impact
It's getting tough to see a positive way forward
End log

We love you Jawa.

... .

It's funny how things go. It now seems that the Intellivision Amico trademark never actually expired; Intellivision submitted a new request well in time but the US patent and trademark office took their time completing the update.

You laugh, but every morning he sits by his front door, hoping that today will be the day his Phantom console finally arrives.

It's being reported that Intellivision have vacated their current offices and so Intellivision is teh dead lol!!1! Knew it!11!

Intellivision is not dead. I guess that, as part of their ongoing cost reductions and reduced workforce, they're operating out of smaller offices. No official line is being reported so we'll have to wait and see.

Surely they should forgo offices altogether and just scam from home.

I heard they went bankrupt but that doesn't mean the Amico is dead. Bankruptcy is part of an ongoing cost reduction ;)

Gotta love your continued optimism, Jawa! I hope your faith is rewarded.

You too could have this unique piece of gaming history for just $1000 per square foot.

No, but that's due to cash rather than not wanting one.

Although, tbh, there has been such a wealth of bad vibes around the system for the past year that I couldn't see the system being a success unless it was priced at, say, £99. I would like to try out the controllers, though, as they looked to have some cool features.

That's fair.

Do you think they have any scope to somehow "convert" the controller hardware and make the system a peripheral to other consoles, for which the games could be released at a discount for those who bought the controller?

I guess that there wouldn't be any insurmountable technical issues for the controller to be converted for use with any of the current consoles - and PC! - although I suspect it'd be so niche that few games would be released for it.

The idea of a simple, cheaper console with unique controllers and cheap games (with no loot boxes or additional paid content) was an attractive one but challenges have combined to make this seemingly an unattainable goal for Intellivision now.

I do wonder if one of the main manufacturers (Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo) could produce a cheap version of their last gen consoles (Xbox One, PS4 and Wii U/Switch); a small form factor box for around £120 with download capability. The mass market is not (currently) gonna pay £70 for a game (at least not in vast quantities) and further extending the life of a cheaper system could be a good option

Then again... the manufacturers perhaps don't want to draw expenditure away from their newer systems and they'd probably point towards subscription services as a way of accessing games more cheaply.

It just feels like a starting price point of circa £290 (Switch) or even £250 (Series S) - let alone the PS5 and Series X - is too expensive for many folk. There *should* be cheaper consoles available.

The Xbox streaming device (or the direct-to-TV version) and a Game Pass subscription will fill that gap.

I think it could do, rinks - although I believe that Microsoft recently said that development of the dedicated streaming box has been put on hold for now? I think that some of the new Samsung TVs will include an Xbox streaming capability, though, and that could be the start of what mass market gaming will become over the next decade.

I don’t believe the box is on hold. They’re just taking time with it. And the Samsung TV app is already available.

I guess it comes down to interpretation, but reports generally indicate that "it won't be out anytime soon".

Yeah, it seems that the Xbox app launched for Samsung TVs (2022 spec models). This could well turn out to be where mass market gaming goes over the next few years. Stadia v2!
