Fine you can't play 4 player there, but 2 player anyway & it's loaded with classic 'simple' games. That actually went down a treat with my nephews and had everyone scrabbling to play together.

For me, I like the idea of cheaper, pick-up-and-play single and multiplayer games with funky new controllers. I'm not kidding myself, though - I think the system may have a tough time getting traction in the market. I hope it does, mainly because it's something different!

A global pandemic which has forced social isolation on everyone is definitely the right time to be putting together a machine that thrives on local multiplayer! :lol:

I think there is a market for this kind of thing but as others have said the price and timing of launching this so close to the big next gen systems is going to kill it I think.

It doesn't launch until next April so - hopefully! - there is time for the retail scene to return to (almost) normal. I would say, though, that it's not so much the cost of the system that is the differentiator but the games. PS5 and Xbox series games are gonna be around £60 whilst Amico games are priced up to £10; they're not really aimed at the same sector of the gaming market. I don't suspect that folk eager (and with the money) to jump aboard next generation will instead choose Amico; but younger folk, families and possibly older gamers may be more interested. Amico is not aimed at changing the minds of next gen gamers... although even some of them may choose to also get an Amico as an "all ages" gaming system. Maybe!

Like I say, I agree that there is definitely a place in the market for a system like this, but that upfront cost is still going to put people off I think. Which is a shame because an alternative take on gaming is not a bad thing to be offering right now!

The controllers are an updated version of the original Intellivision controllers though - and there's a reason why no one has gone with that form factor for 35 years - they were not nice to use (we had the system when I was a kid).

Is this truly more intuitive for casual players? I'm not so sure.

I am a little unsure about the controller too, Hound - it's a lot different to anything else on the market right now. Although it looks similar to Intellivision's 80s controller and retains the control disc, it does have additional features (touch screen, gyro, four side buttons and a microphone).

I do wonder if the absence of a stick will prove a mistake... but maybe because that's just how things are on other systems? I've watched a few vids of folk using the controller and it seems like they're doing okay - but, of course, that is in Intellivision's own videos! I guess we won't really know until we see reports of folk outside of Intellivision using them.

The problem this has is it's going for a market which doesn't exist any more. When the Wii came out, it was a revelation for many people and offered something intuitive in motion controls that didn't exist in gaming at that point, prompting many to try it out thst wouldn't have ever gone near a console.

Now though, that same audience all have smart phones, which all have motion built in (mainly for tilt I suppose). They can get games for either free or very little money, and the kids all get cheap tablets or hand me down phones to play on. Nobody is going to pay Xbox S prices for something their phones already offer. Nobody is buying a console like this now out of anything bit curiosity. It's missed the boat by 15 years.

I do fear that you may be right, Ad. The Amico definitely has a battle on in getting traction in the market; as you say, there are multiple routes into gaming nowdays and, for the casual mass market, phone and tablet gaming is dominant.

I still feel there is a gap - which could grow to be quite a big market - for family/friends gaming, though. Many people of all ages played on the Wii and often in groups rather than alone. Mobile gaming is perhaps more solo focussed - the Amico could get the family back in front of the TV.

It really does have a challenge in gaining awareness and desirability in the market, though. I'd say it has an outside chance, with a lot depending upon Intellivision getting focus on the system at retail and driving down the core console nearer to a £150 to £180 price point.

I think we all appreciate your endless optimism Jawa, but this thing doesn't have a snowballs chance in hell.

Well when you get one Tommy Tallarico can sleep soundly knowing at least one person got some enjoyment from it.

The games sounds cheap when compared to £60 AAA console releases, but when you look at the games you realise most have a lot more in common with mobile and flash games, so they actually come out sounding expensive.

The console itself is far too expensive.
