Intellivision is back! Or, at least, it will be on 10 October 2020. The Intellivision Amico will be a new console with retro styling brought into the present. Check out the video above for details of the system and the people behind it.

I have never played on an original Intellivision console - I believe it was more popular in the US than here in the UK - but I'm intrigued to see how this idea develops. The controller looks... uhm... different. But, hey, it's true to the original console and, with the additional Wii Remote-type functionality, it could be interesting. I'm not so keen on those side buttons, though.

Some pretty big brands and games are shown in that vid albeit they are very much retro flavours. I wonder... could this take off? Ironically, it looks similar (in terms of approach) to the new Atari VCS console that is due to launch this year. Who would have thought that, after battling in the 1980s, Intellivision and Atari would face up to each other again in 2020? .

I actually recognise that vp of marketing for Nintendo (Kerrian Kaplan) as I read interviews with her in magazines way back.

That's quite and impressive lineup of staff and the video was good. Never had or seen an intellivision however, I know it was one of the first analogue type control sticks.

I look forward to the hardware bombing and playing Earthworm Jim on PC/PS5/XB2 and Switch in early 2021.

Ha, exactly what I thought. No way is that staying exclusive.

Do you think someone bought a whole tonne of original iPod housings and then had to work out a good way of using them?

Good luck luck launching this the same month as PS5 and Xbox Next :fp:

Also strawberry float off making the new Earthworm Jim exclusive on a console no one will own.

They say it does 2D better than current gen (and PS5!) because they're not dedicated 2D consoles. Yes, apparently that (reasoning) is bollocks.

I like the idea but I doubt it'll be much of a success, if at all.

As has been said launching at the same time as the next gen consoles seems like an odd decision.

They may not be the same people buying the machine but their advertising will get completely buried by the flood of money being spent by Sony and Microsoft.

I think they're working along the same lines as Nintendo, although to be fair they resemble the original controllers with a touchscreen replacing the number buttons (naturally) and a simplified and probably more reliable digital 8 way disk thing (or maybe it's analogue with knotches like a Nintendo style analogue stick pre-wii u mixed with a circle pad).

Take an existing shape that people are familiar with already that's "casual" like a TV remote and turn it into a game controller. Except this time it resembles another popular form factor for something non gaming (MP3 player), ripe for pillaging since everyone uses a smartphone now.

That's going to bomb really hard. Hopefully they don't build too many otherwise they'll be needing a plot next to the E.T grave.

Imagine even bothering to concept this gooseberry fool let alone put money in to making it.

At a guess I'd say they saw the reasonable popularity of the Nintendo minis and the interest around Mini Genesis/Megadrive and thought "We can do that with Intellivision, cram it full of even more games along with a few new ones. We'll rake in the dough!"

At least Atari's still a recognisable brand (I've seen teens wearing those t-shirts they sell in H&M).

The Intellivision only sold 3 million units, I doubt most Americans around the age of 40-50 remember the brand.

Dude, I've seen teens wearing Motorhead and Slayer t-shirts bought from Top Shop, doesn't mean they know who they are.
