I think 2019 is a glorious time for fans of space based Sci-fi?
With Halo, Dune, The Expanse and Star trek all getting the big money TV series treatment it's a great time to be a tv Sci-fi fan and I'm wondering if we've ever had it so good?
Sci-fi has for a while been a dumping ground for pants efforts with some amazing high points like BSG and Babylon 5 but I think finally now the genre is being taken seriously and they realise that people will respond to well written space Sci-Fi and it isn't just a niche thing any more.

So, is 2019 a good time to be a space Sci-Fi fan or are you a bit disappointed?

I think 1969 was the best Sci-fi movie with the fake moon landing, when they do a convincing Mars landing then I'll be happy.

I think there's actually a lack of decent sci-fi around at the moment, especially when it comes to movies (can't remember the last time i saw a truly decent alien invasion flick).

That said, The Orville was fun, Agents of Shield have leaned more towards the genre now too, and i have my Lost in Space (the netflix reboot) blu ray boxset on my table, so that should hopefully provide a decent sci fi fix.

Wait, there is a new Dune adaption coming? To the internet!

To be honest I have not been impressed by a lot of sci-fi recently. A lot of it seems, like much of the cultural output these days, to be a retread rather than doing anything new or exciting. Even Dune, which I just got so excited about, has been done. The new Star Trek and other shows have not engaged me not because they are not good but because even if I got a really great Star Trek I don't necessarily want more Star Trek if it means just wallowing in nostalgia.

I will give the Expanse some credit though as it is kind of doing something that has not been done a lot before; namely delivering a kind of realism that you don't usually see in space operas. It's kind of refreshing to see a show that primarily takes place on a spaceship where the laws of physics are mostly obeyed.

It’s being directed by Denis Villeneuve, of Blade Runner 2049 and Arrival fame.

I'm very happy to see it too! After BSG ended it seemed to me like space-based sci-fi shows were dying out, but that's definitely not the case. Loving The Expanse too BTW, great show.

I have no idea because the only TV subscription I have is Now Kids. I do, however, know that on 13th September it will be the 20th anniversary of the Moon bring ripped out of earth orbit by a massive nuclear explosion which was very dramatic indeed.

Back when the BBC was making Doctor Who and Blake's 7 that was the golden age for sci fi....

Plus sorry but I'm a classic BSG fan not this modern stuff, Saturday used to be for BSG, buck rogers and lost in space when I was a kid , usually with a Dr who omnibious on Sundays.
