Another big recent American trend I've noticed over the last few years, the amount of pickup trucks on UK roads, something you never used to see. Seeing loads of new Ford Rangers and Nissan Navaras with 16/17/18 reg's on the roads, not so many Land Rovers or Range Rovers these days

I've noticed this as well, lots of Hilux's and that Mitsubishi one as well.

Still see gooseberry fool loads of Range and Land Rovers round or way mind.

I'm pretty sure this thread ends with blaming Netflix.

Ironically American Netflix is full of British shows.

It's not just kids TV, every music video (even by british artists) seems to be filmed in the US.

Take Dua Lipa: New Rules as an example, it's a very popular track and the video could have been pretty much filmed anywhere in the UK, but did they do that? Nope, it's set in LA just like everything else.

British kids shows are extremely popular in America, but they’re often redubbed. Teletubbies for example was voiced by Rolf Saxon (George Stobbart), Bob the Builder (various) and so on. I think Thomas the Tank may be an exception.

A lot of the examples used in this thread have been in place for upwards of fifteen years. My school had lockers, a prom for the final two years at the end of the school year, and principal was used interchangeably with head teacher.

We aren’t becoming more like the US, we’re just taking some superficial traits and twisting them to suit our own culture, which the UK has always done, only this time we’re borrowing from a larger power and not taking from some outpost of empire. To become like the US would require both a massive swing to the right from the majority of the population and wholescale political reform from the grassroots level and above. It won’t happen.

On the subject of pickup trucks, I discovered the other day that because they're classed as commercial vehicles, if you're a contractor you can buy one using funds from your company kitty (and as you only pay tax on your *profits*, there's a pretty substantial tax saving there over buying a normal car out of your own pocket).

Didn't Universal, Sony and Warner buy up all our record labels? Basically every big artist these days has an American boss.

Their population is growing at a much faster rate than ours too, apparently in the 1920s their population was just over twice the size of ours, now it's 5x bigger, hence the increasing influence on global pop culture.

I'd agree completely with this. We had high school prom a good 16 years ago too, and whilst obviously an American thing it was very much British. Nobody properly cared about it like they do there, it was just an excuse to get hammered. It would be odd if US culture didn't influence ours, but I've yet to see any signs that we are becoming like the US, other than people with poor vocabulary saying "like" a lot.

I've been watching American TV shows for years, since the days of saved by the Bell and California Dreams, Rugrats, Kenan and Kel etc. In fact I probably watched way more American shows than British as a child because they were great. Off the top of my head I can think of Thomas the tank engine for British shows I watched.

I also think headmaster is a very outdated term, so have no issues with principle. Headmaster and headmistress just sound weird to me.

I mainly watched british tv shows as a kid, such as Count Duckula, The Dreamstone, Art Attack, Fun House, etc.

Only watched the odd US cartoon as CITV didn't tend to screen many of them, memorable examples are Duck Tales, Ghostbusters, Talespin, Animaniacs, Hey Arnold, and Tiny Toons.

I just work there, I neither live there nor come from there thank god.

I was one who mostly watched US shows as a kid. TMHT, Biker Mice from Mars, Spider-Man, X-Men(yes yes, Canadian), Power Rangers, Beetleborgs, etc etc.

Funnily enough I never developed an American accent, though I did end up with a fascination for America that's become my career.
