Is it homophobic to sing along to "you cheap lousy ******" when listening to Fairytale of New York?

The other characters cheer and laugh when he sings it though.

It's a conscious artistic decision to include the word. Plenty of ways it could have been nullified (replace it with some other word) or avoided (cut before the line, sing a different song).

The only real reason to include it at this point is to manufacture controversy and keep the show as a talking point through weaponising the LGBT community. It's divisive, it's predictable, and it's entirely what they want.

I thought the other cast members react with a more awkward surprise.

The implication is that the uncle Bryn character is gay, therefore is it acceptable that he is "reclaiming the word"?

That’s a bit of a reach. He’s certainly not out as a gay character on the show even if they sometimes have jokes that hint at it. Regardless, the reaction was much more them laughing at Uncle Bryn for saying a “rude word”. And we can see from Ruth Jones comments that I posted on the previous page that they felt it was in keeping for the characters rather than anything to do with reclaiming the word.

Thankfully as boxing day is almost over all Christmas songs are now completely irrelevant for another year.

Was skimming Facebook today and someone on my friends replied to an article about this with "get a grip" over people complaining about the Gavin & Stacy thing. The same banana split is one of those annoying as strawberry float militant vegan constantly sharing shite about that sort of stuff.

I have just noticed this thread so to answer the title question = No it’s not. I was pleased the Gavin and Stacy Christmas special didn’t cut that line as I thought they might to be pc

It's really cool how being rich insulates you from all consequences.

It's not homophobic to say the line. It's what comes after that is. Astounding really that James Corden calls himself an LGBT rally and yet doesn't think about the problematic issues around that word, especially in the culture that it's being screened in.

Not actually aimed at RichardUK directly, but I do enjoy the dissonance of the 'have thicker skin, it's PC gone mad' brigade when you make the slightest hint at them being a bit uneducated and poorly read or straight up call them a bellend. Then it's all about decorum, because a personal insult is not polite, but enormous sweeping slurs are completely fine.

I’d have to rewatch it to judge the reaction after Bryn sings the lyric as I don’t remember what the other characters did.

When they started the song I wondered what they were going to do with the word, I figured they would alter it or there would be some comedic interruption before they got there.

I’m not convinced it was done in a homophobic way (again I’d have to rewatch to fully judge), the show doesn’t really have a homophobic angle to it, Bryn is clearly a gay man, the nephew is openly gay and fully accepted by everyone.

It seems strange that they would include that song with the controversy around it, but it felt true to those characters. I think Ruth Jones is right that the character of Uncle Bryn absolutely would sing the line without really thinking about the meaning of it.

You’d think Cordon/Jones would have just used a different song, although other Christmas duets also have their issues. Baby it’s Cold Outside for instance...

I understand that view point and I don’t have the view that everything should be allowed regardless of what it is but I am gay and I personally have no issue with it, it does not offend or upset me, again that’s me personally.
