Genuinely asking, it's not something I have ever fully understood.

Queer is an umbrella term that encompasses all non-cis and/or non-het identities. A fair few people don't really like reeling off their labels, particularly in front of straight people who might not understand what the words mean - like to give a possible example it can feel awkward for some people to say e.g. "I'm asexual and biromantic, and transfem nonbinary" and invite a lot of questions about themself and what those terms are - so it might be easier for them to just say "I'm queer". Others don't feel a particular label fully describes their sexual or gender identity, or they may have a fluid identity. Some just prefer it, sometimes because of its connotations within the community: while it's not true of everyone who uses the word, "queer" does carry some political connotations that "LGBT+" or just e.g. "gay" doesn't, because the people who first reclaimed it tended to be more politically radical.

Ah right, I kind of understand, I think! It's one of those things I have never heard used in practice, I guess maybe as I don't tend to really ask people their sexual orientation.

Seriously though, it's a term i've seen being used online for years, and not once have i ever bothered to look up what it meant, especially as i've never encountered it in real life.

Judging by what's been posted here about it though, the whole thing sounds like yet more internet bs which i shall continue to ignore.

Kek was I think 'lol' in World of Warcraft. Pretty sure when you were Alliance and a Horde player was nearby and laughed it would have kek a speech bubble. Unfortunately people like ruining things and now it's seemingly being used by racist banana splits who like to spoil everyone else's fun.

The directors where I work are openly homophobic and nobody questions or challenges them. I'm completely bottom in the pecking order though, they already see me as not "in the clique" and I need to pay my bills so I just try and ignore it. Probably makes me a shitty person but it's really awful.

And I hate this song.

All singing should be banned and anyone seen doing it should be shunned :x .

Please stop. I'm far from being offended, but the embarrassment is another thing entirely.

For the first time in several years I'm inclined to agree with Banjo, so well done on making me feel dirty. It's been explained why several members are legitimately uncomfortable with your use of the term kek but you insist on using it. Ignorance is no longer an excuse so now you just look like a troll.

I didn't know kek was used by racists, well time to stop using it then.

Granted I only use it with close friends ironically but I saw it as another way to say "lol"... I'll stick to lol then.

Before I found out about racism term I thought it was how orcs laughed or something like that, as it seemed linked to WoW/orcs.

Aka it's just dumb word

There are a few of these things now - the Pepe frog cartoon was the biggest one. It was beloved of gamers and imageboard nerds, but as sections of those communities became politically radicalised and carried Pepe with them into their political memes, Pepe became associated with those extreme views. There's nothing inherently racist about the character itself and I obviously don't think everyone who types monkaS on Twitch is an ethnonationalist, but I raise an eyebrow at anyone who commits to making or sharing Pepe memes because almost everyone that I see being visibly "into" Pepe is a weird alt-right dork.

Thing is, there are channels on twitch, like RGTVL who have Pepe emotes (or at least ones used from Frankerfacez,) they have at least 2 trans people who stream on that channel, there have been several black people too. It's a shame that it's thought of this way.

I'm not giving Kek to racists. strawberry float that.

I've used it for over ten years and just because some banana splits think it's funny to use it doesn't mean that we should lose the word.
