Is it a good game? I guess so. I wouldn't say it's bad, but there are a lot of games I'd say that are probably good but that aren't really for me. Skyward Sword is one of those games.

I wouldn't say the overworld being the extension of the dungeons is a strength or a weakness- it's just something that is, and personally I didn't care much for it. I wanted more areas that I could properly explore, areas that seemed part of an actual world. Here it's one big obstacle course that seemed a bit too gamey for me.

Perhaps it's because it goes against what I had grown up to expect from a Zelda game, but the 'classic' games were the way they were for a reason. There was a nice pacing to them. You had the dungeons and temples which were densely packed with puzzles, and then you had the bits in between, where you explore the new area and talk to NPCs of the nearby town to get the feel of what's going on, which were a nice breather.

Meanwhile the motion controls were fine but I didn't particularly get a buzz out of them. Having free movement of the sword sounded great but it normally just equated to hitting a specific angle occasionally. The stamina wheel I found kind of annoying in this game and I didn't really see the point in it - I don't think its reappearance in Botw means it was a good addition in SS because generally open world games just happen to have stamina systems anyway - I guess because of the emphasis on managing the way you travel and incentivising finding better ways to do it like getting a horse.

It's a good game, but a bad Zelda game.

Pretty much this.

I expect better from my mainline Zelda games.

1 Skyward Sword - way back when, and a relatively simple map of Hyrule, which establishes a pretty straightforward triangular world: Eldin (volcanoes) in the north, Faron (forests) in the southeast, Lanayru (deserts) in the southwest.

2 Ocarina of Time - remains consistent with SS; Kokiri Forest is the most southeast location, Death Mountain the most northerly, Desert Colossus the most eastern.

3a* Twilight Princess - consistent again (assuming you're playing on GC not Wii, in which case you're basically playing the game in Mirror Mode because Miyamoto is left handed) but you need to rotate the map anticlockwise a bit, so that northwest becomes north and Eldin / Death Mountain are at the top of the map.

3b* The Wind Waker - err, assuming that Fire Mountain is the peak of Death Mountain, and that Forsaken Fortress and Forest Haven sit atop the old homes of the Gerudo and Kokiri respectively, then yes, again we are consistent.

4 Breath of the Wild - LANAYRU HAS JUMPED TO THE WEST OF EVERYTHING ELSE

I too can get behind this point of view.

It was great and a change from earlier titles, almost a hybrid of what they really wanted compared to the previous game.

I hope they remake it on the switch with HD graphics and no loading screens between areas.

I can get along with this ranking.

It was pretty good,I certainly like the story and the relationship between Link and Zelda, but the motion controls, pacing and those blooming Imprisoned boss battles did kinda ruin the experience for me. This Zelda would certainly benifit the most from a remake sorting out most of those problems you could be looking at a high tier Zelda game.

My favourite Zelda is TP even if it's opening is too long and the Wolf sections are a bit crap, I just love the dark tone and the epic boss battles and dungeons.

I see a grudge coming on.

Trying to link up Zelda lore is like worrying about your children looking at porn on the internet. It's hopeless.

Skyward Sword is pretty good, but not without problems. It had filler. Lots of filler. They could have taken that out and had a really great 15-20 hour game.

The positives, the sword play was mostly great for me (except the thrust attack). The time stone mechanic was brilliant. The three main areas being like a dungeon was wonderful, loved the design of those places. Best Zelda incarnation and design as well. She was such a sweet character in this, and she's useful as well in the plot, as opposed to being a straight damsel in distress.

And Groose was fantastic. Groose :datass:

I really struggle to see how anyone could think it’s the best Zelda.

It has one of the best stories and the temples are pretty good. That’s where I stop being able to rank anything it does anywhere other than at the arse end of Zelda tiering lists.

Does the original thread still exist so I can go back over my thoughts at the time.

It should do, because I remember posting in it complaining about something when I was replaying it a year or two ago and someone split my moan into it's own thread and locked the original game thread :shifty:

It got massively annoying with the motion controls, only the bow controls really benefitted from it. The world felt much less connected that any other Zelda I have played.

Unusually for a Zelda game, towards the end I just wanted it to be over. It wasn't a bad game, but it's nowhere near the best in the series.

Those two things are like 90% of Skyward Sword though

Skyloft itself also compares very well as a hub, with some of the best NPC design in the series.
