...Could effect my entire life.

Here's the rub. I'm trying to decide on my 5 university choices. Where I go to university could, and most probably will, effect the rest of my life.

I don't know whether I am over thinking, over analysing, or just over everything-ing this. Where I spend the years between September 2009 and June 2012 will effect my love life, possibly the circle of friends I maintain for the rest of my life (I still talk to people I meant to lower school with), and ultimately, my career.

For example: If I apply (and get into) to Manchester University, I could potentially spend the third year of my Biomedical Science degree in Japan, on a research project (if my language proficiency is up to scratch). However, if I apply to Manchester Met, then I could potentially spend the second year of my degree in the USA, and the third on a work placement in a Manchester hospital. However, if I go to Warwick, I would do neither of those, and potentially spend all three years never leaving the (apparently all inclusive) campus!

Both Manchester universities have a high female:male ratio. Where I go to university could have a substantial impact on the amount of sex I have. I could go to Manchester and have lots of sex (because come on, I'm a stud), contract herpes, and be plagued for the rest of my life. Or I could go to Loughborough, and get none. I could go to Manchester and end up in Japan, where I meet my future wife. Our kids will be half Japanese, half English. Or I could go to Kings London, and meet a nice Welsh girl.

It's made all the more difficult by the fact that I haven't visited half these places, I'm basing my opinions on league tables, male:female ratios, and entry requirements, and I'm very tired.

Anyway, I'm off to bed. When was the last time you had to make a decision that could have/did change the rest of your life.

Also, does anyone else suffer from the terrible affliction where by they can't stop looking at all the different variables? I was fired from my last job because I stayed late one evening (the action that caused me to be fired occurred while I was staying late). I only stayed late because a girl I very much wanted to sex up was staying late also. Sometimes I can't stop thinking about all the different occurrences that put me in that situation. Something will happen to me, and I'll trace it back to something that happened a year ago and blame it on that. Or I'll take an insignificant decision I have to make, and try and think of all the crazy outcomes.

So you're choosing a course based on the amount of women you can pull?

Sort your priorities out mate.

Ha, but no.

But yes. Sort of. Not really. Basically, I just can't stop thinking that the 5 universities that I put on that application will effect the rest of my life. Women, friends, career. Whether I live past 30. Everything.

Not just women, though I was using that as an example. I could easily say the same about friends. The friends I maintain for the rest of my life could be determined by where I go to university. But I won't stop there, I'll extrapolate it beyond reason. It keeps me up at night.

Just go to strawberry floating uni where you want and basically start over. This'll be the last chance you have to ever do that,

Also, nobody cares.

If these are the kind of things that affect your choice, I wouldn't bother going to uni at all.

This is seriously one of the most ridiculous posts I've seen in a long time. I really can't believe you typed such a long post, which is full of complete gooseberry fool. Maybe you should be thinking more about the fact you over analyse thing...?

Go to uni, see how it pans out and go on from there. Whatever you do it sounds like you will regret it anyway.

To kind of prove the point that you're overthinking this, I went to Uni, decided I hated my course, quit after a year, and didn't make any lasting friends. Uni had no impact on my job, zero on my love life (I met my wife, but that was outside Uni, and the only difference it made to our relationship was that it enabled us to visit Piccadilly Records on a more regular basis than we would have otherwise) and very little on my life full stop.

His University choice will put into action, produce as a result, bring about the rest of his life. It will effect it. It will also change, alter, influence the rest of his life, so it will also affect it. Both words are valid to use - perhaps the author will decide that he used the wrong one based on what he wanted to imply, but neither are grammatically incorrect so it's rather presumptuous for anyone to voice their opinion on his wording.

lolwut indeed. You cannot use both words. The act of choosing will affect his future.

Hang on, are you arguing against or with me here?

EDIT: Okay, let's put it like this. His choice of Uni will both affect and effect his future, depending on how the author views it. It will put his future into motion: it will cause it. However, he will still have a future that will be merely affected by the choice. It depends on whether we are talking about the future he wants, which would be effected by a good choice of Uni (and wouldn't be effected by a bad choice of Uni), or any future, which would be affected by his choice of Uni.

EDIT2: Upon checking, that's right. It's not grammatically incorrect at all. Which word the author wants to use is entirely based upon what he wants to imply. I can't see how you could argue against that, as it's essentially what the Oxford Dictionary quote you posted actually says. To effect is to cause, to affect is to bring about a change in. His choice of Uni will effect (cause) the life he wants, or perhaps effect (cause) a life he doesn't want [hence the dilemma], but it will affect (change) his per se 'life' as a whole.

Go to the uni which is giving you a placement at a work place or something, not the one where you're going to be sheltered on campus. You're doing Biomedical science, and Uni's are churning out biomed students and if you haven't got a first degree then you better hope you've got a 2.1 with experience otherwise you won't get hired. Getting a first degree with some work experience will help you beat all those who get a first too.

This is stupid. Go to Manchester and live in Owens Park - you'll soon stop caring about little inconsequential things because you'll be so sleep-deprived from all the early morning fire alarms.
