No. I gracefully wander through life not caring about how the decisions I make will affect me in later life. I worry about nothing.

Getting a first degree with some work experience will help you beat all those who get a first too.

This.

Also, you're over thinking this too much, you put 5 choices down now, they either give you an offer and offer you the chance to visit the Uni anyway, or they don't give you an offer.

So you have until April/May to make a final decision anyway. And you'll probably have a great time wherever you go.

Seriously though go to Manchester, there's some great opportunities there to do stuff that most people haven't and possibly won't have the chance to do.

Manchester is win. Great place to go for uni!

I'm still gutted that I narrowly missed getting on a course there. Had to settle with Salford instead.

It's not that good. The students seem more irritating than other unis I've visited like Leeds, and my department is useless here. Fallowfield is a complete gooseberry fool hole, like all the worst bits about being a student condensed into one small space. Meh. I do like it here, but it's not all that.

Im very similar, live for the moment take each day as it comes etc. If you think too much you will end up stressing yourself out. Bottom line is you will have a great time no matter what uni you go to. Its all about your attitude not the location. There will be great people at any uni. You should pick whichever one is best for the course you want! Social side should come a close second (but it isnt the priority)

I agree with you about Fallowfield, I don't even go to uni and I've had some bad times there. It should be closed off and quarantined.

What Daz said. I picked my choices based on several factors, the course, the proximity to home, the nightlife etc, but the course was always first priority. And I got a good one. So will you.

Manchester, or Man Met? See, I went to visit both, and they both seem great. Obviously, Man Met is slightly further down the league tables, and Aaron doesn't think much of it, but the placement year should make up for it, yeah? A first is first, right?

I'd obviously prefer Manchester Uni though.

Anyway, like I said it isn't just about university.

EDIT: Honestly, no one else thinks about these things. University will effect the people I meet, the placements years I go on, the foreign trips I take part in. No one else thinks that decisions (not necessarily just university) will have far reaching consequences on their life?

Yeah, and I'll also add that the intake of freshers at Lboro this year is appears to be 50:50 with regards to ratio.

And obviously there's still a lot of good looking girls.

Wrong. AApparently, a degree from certain universities is almost not worth the paper it's written on nowadays, although I think that's more to do with some of the ridiculous degree courses you can pick.

Yeah, but only a complete moron factors male to female ratio into any of that.

That's not very nice. :(

Come on, I was only using that as an example of one of the many variables that run through my head when it is trying to make a decision like this.

Okay, a Biomedical Science 1st is a Biomedical Science 1st, yeah? With placement years and foreign experience thrown into the mix, how much does the 'reputation' of a university, or its league standing affect employment etc?

To be fair to Igor, in retrospect I would have picked a Uni with a decent female to male ratio. Mine was an utter cockfest and I felt I missed out on a large part of the Uni experiance.

The proper one.

And as for thinking about the future, I don't honestly think that considering the type of person you will or will not end up marrying or living with in 20 years time after you've carried on education for three years is significant.

I started uni knowing that I'd be more decisive about my future once I'd done the course, as I'd have a better idea of what I want to do then. I don't really think of consequences stretching that far, as I prefer to consider what immediately follows.

Uni reputation also matters because it dictates the quality of the tutelage you'll receive. If you go to a gooseberry fool uni, the worth of the degree will be lower because you won't be taught to the same standard.

Tbh, University seems to matter alot to prospective employers. I went to Lancaster and got fed up of employers looking for graduates from a specific group of Universities. I think there was an article in the Lancaster University paper recently, saying that there is discrimination towards graduates from "lesser" Universities.

However, personally speaking, I think it's ridiculous to factor the amount of pussy at any particular university into your decision.

And yes, people do think about how their decisions will affect their life further down the line... almost everyone does, I'd imagine. The difference is that they don't post about it on a games forum under the misguided notion that someone there actually cares. Your life, man. If you want to chase girls, go ahead. That's not my jurisdiction. But on the forum, I'll call you stupid, because I can!

By all means. I don't really expect anyone to care about the situation in the first post. Just like no one really cares about the last time anyone did something for first time, or just like no one cares how any of us are feeling today, or that no one really cares that a Muslim cleric just married a pre-pubescent girl.

The purpose of the first post wasn't really to advertise that I'm making my university choices. Like I said, this isn't a soap opera. It wasn't to say that the amount of fanny is the sole deciding factor of my university choice (though it is something I think about).

It was to hopefully spark a discussion about how we think our decisions affect our lives, and how our lives would be different if an important/unimportant point had gone in another direction, something like that. Fate, choice, a butterfly flapping its wings blah blah blah.

A mate of mine forgot his work keys on 07/07/05. This resulted in him being late for the bus.

Not the bus that exploded, but you get what I mean.

I went to Manchester Met. The poor mans university in Manchester.

It was alright, didn't do me any harm.... bar the fact i'm sat in a dead end job 5 years after graduation and my working day consists of zero of what I did in my degree.

Anyway stop stressing about things and just have a good time.

 Karlprof
nice use of the word "twat" there. How old are you?

Those of us who attended Grammar school can confirm that affect is a verb and effect is a noun. Try looking it up on Dictionary.com if you don't believe me.

AFFECT
af⋅fect1   /v. əˈfɛkt; n. ˈæfɛkt/ [v. uh-fekt; n. af-ekt]

–verb (used with object) 1. to act on; produce an effect or change in: Cold weather affected the crops.
2. to impress the mind or move the feelings of: The music affected him deeply.
3. (of pain, disease, etc.) to attack or lay hold of.

EFFECT:
ef⋅fect   /[i-fekt]

–noun 1. something that is produced by an agency or cause; result; consequence: Exposure to the sun had the effect of toughening his skin.
2. power to produce results; efficacy; force; validity; influence: His protest had no effect.
3. the state of being effective or operative; operation or execution; accomplishment or fulfillment: to bring a plan into effect.
4. a mental or emotional impression produced, as by a painting or a speech.
5. meaning or sense; purpose or intention: She disapproved of the proposal and wrote to that effect.
6. the making of a desired impression: We had the feeling that the big, expensive car was only for effect.
7. an illusory phenomenon: a three-dimensional effect.
8. a real phenomenon (usually named for its discoverer): the Doppler effect.
9. special effects.

The original poster wrote: Where I go to university could, and most probably will, effect the rest of my life.

Therefore in this context, they were looking for a verb. Effect is primarily a noun. Affect is primarily a verb. So the correct use would be "Where I go to university could, and most probably will, affect the rest of my life". Otherwise, the sentence had no verb! An alternative would be "Where I go to university could, and most probably will, have an effect upon the rest of my life".
