Any reason why there's no launch discount for this on the Epic store?

Looks like its still live on the switch eshop, which is what threw me. Annoying to have missed it by a couple of hours. I'll wait until its back down again, I'm not paying more than it's already been on sale for.

I wrote a thing about how UGG is art. Also about how the game's short length isn't entirely a bad thing.

I played 30 minutes of this and it’s brilliant!

The art style, the animation on the goose, the piano soundtrack that reacts to your movements, it all comes together so well. The game has great personality.

Looking forward to playing more.

Bought this on release but wanted to play through with my wife so I've only just gotten into it.

Dear me it's lovely.

It's just so...nice being an absolute nuisance. Like, as soon as I saw the sandwich in the first area I knew it was going in the water. No goal in mind, I was just in such a goosey headspace I knew what had to be done. Same with the farmer's carrots. Did I need every one of them for the picnic? No. Did I steal all of them for the picnic? Damn goosin' I did.

Onto the third stage now and it continues to be delightful. I hear it's pretty short but given the sheer amount of entertainment I've gotten from it I don't really care.

honk

That short length really plays into the final segment too.

 at the goose in the football comic. We have a cultural icon on our hands.

Interesting read!

Your Calls of Duty (online modes), your Candy Crushes, even your Hyrule Warriors, all seemed designed to dull the brain, and make you feel only through the barest minimum of obvious stimuli.

I'd argue that they are designed deliberately in the opposite - constantly rewarding the brain with deliberately engaging stimuli! However (and I think this is the point you were getting at) that stimuli is very surface level brain hack stuff, rather than the deeper, ponderous engagement we think of "art" having. To put it more succinctly, they are entertainment, not art.

One thing that does annoy me when art and feelings get put in the same context is that ‘happy feelings’ don’t see to count. You have to be sad. That’s what ‘feelings’ mean in most people’s descriptions of art, really – sadness, or at a push a hollow empty feeling.

I'm not sure where you get this from but I don't agree! There are plenty of games I think of as being primarily art-experiences, with the evocation of happy feelings: The playful sandboxes of Hohokum, the natural soundscapes of Proteus, the abstract vectors of Vib Ribbon, to name a few.

It’s not the simple ‘yay, I did the thing’ barely-joy that a game like Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze might inspire.

I think we might value the rush of achievement on completing a challenging level quite differently! Not with Tropical Freeze specifically, but few things can have me air punching in joy the same way as videogames.

Taf your “I was in a goosey headspace” comment perfectly sums up the fun of this.

From the rest of your post I’m guessing that’s ‘interesting’. :slol: That said, thank you for reading it, and even more for engaging in it!

That’s another way of putting it - certainly I agree that the stimuli are much more surface-level. This might be another aspect of...

I think we might value the rush of achievement on completing a challenging level quite differently! Not with Tropical Freeze specifically, but few things can have me air punching in joy the same way as videogames.

...this, the power that a (relatively) simple accomplishment in a video game can have to stir us. I’ll be honest, even in Celeste the feelings in moments of sheer gameplay were mostly relief: they became joy when cunningly mixed with the soundtrack and story beats only. DKCTF didn’t have that at all for me.

Fair, I was thinking mostly of non-game art. Even then you can get a joyous whirl of colours in a Van Gogh, but when most people say art makes them ‘feel things’, it still feels to me like that needs to be ‘deeper’ (note quotation marks) than sheer joy.

Mostly that quote makes me feel like I made a misspelling. :x Fortunately I can go back and correct the article, especially since I only realised today that the segment with the bell in the miniature church tower essentially suggests that the goose would strawberry float with God Himself for no other reason than being a goose and that seems worth including.

I should qualify it is both interesting and good ;)

You should definitely include that spoilered point - I didn't think of that but it's a great interpretation

So I finished it.

It really is on the short side. I’m a big believer in games not overstaying their welcome BUT I feel this needed one or two hours more (an extra are or two perhaps).

Regardless of that though, it’s a fine achievement. A really original idea and very well executed.
