The Doom Spoon wrote:So for the first Weekender, I thought I'd start with something close to my heart, and that's Starwars games on the GameCube!

We were absolutely spoilt with a range of different games from the franchise on this system! Every one of them offering something different!

Image

From the awesome re-enactments of Starfighter battles in the original trilogy, to diving deeper into the events of the Clone Wars, and even taking a deeper look at the antics of one popular Bounty Hunter! Then you have the ever charming and always stupidly fun, Lego games!

---

Rogue Squadron 2: Rogue Leader

I wanted to take a closer look at a couple of these games, so up first is my all time favourite and one of the Star Wars games ever produced, Rogue Squadron 2: Rogue Leader!

Image

Apart from this being the first Cube game I played, this still holds up today, both visually and gameplay as an incredible Starfighter game!

I have many happy memories of me and my mate in year 6 gushing over this game and once completed, trying to trawl magazines and the early internet for cheat codes to unlock secret ships, levels and have unlimited missiles and lives!

From memory, the ship's you could unlock with codes were, the Millennium Falcon, Slave 1, Naboo Starfighter, TIE Fighter, TIE Bomber, TIE Interceptor and Vader's TIE Fighter!

Once we discovered one, we'd play it to death! Figuring out the best way to use the ship, what missions it was good for and generally how it felt!

I would always test them on the final mission, taking on the Imperial Fleet then having to destroy the Death Star 2!

---

Bounty Hunter

Moving on, I wanted to highlight a game I loved so much, but doesn't seem to get the recognition in the Star Wars game community, and that's Bounty Hunter!

Image

In this game you play as Jango Fett, and it's based before the events of Episode 2: Attack of the Clones. I loved this game, firstly because there wasn't loads of character development for either Jango or Boba in the film's, so this really gave you a snapshot into the life of a Bounty Hunter and let's be fair, both were cool as hell characters! I'm so glad the Mandalorian exists now to give us all this lore, but before that, this was basically all we had!

I always remembered the gameplay to be very good, and many levels almost having puzzles to figure out in order to complete them! Overall it was just super badass experience getting to play out this awesome character! :D

Doom! That's a cracking collection of Star Wars goodness on the Cube! There seemed to be loads of Star Wars games during that era and it's great to see some of them shown here in this first Weekender :toot: .

I was always envious of the Rogue Squadron II and III games as they were exclusive to the GC. It was cool to hear about the additional ships that could be unlocked - it sounds really neat.

Bounty Hunter is another Star Wars game that looks fun but I haven't played. It seems that it was on GC and PS2 but not the Xbox. I'll go check out a vid on YouTube as the idea of being a Bounty Hunter seems like it could be a good premise for a game.

It was also ace to see Lego SW get a mention. I still haven't got around to really putting time into the game but it captures the atmosphere well and has lots of fun elements, too. Well worth the inclusion in your collection!

Oh! And I gotta mention the photos... I love how Vader and Chewy are looming large in the backgrounds; it's a really nice touch! :D :datass: .

Cheers for the kind words Jawa! I've had those figures for a while and knew I needed to include them somehow! Tool inspiration from you featuring your Jawa figure actually! :D

Honestly, Bounty Hunter was awesome! If you do give it a go, let me know what you think! It can be picked up quite cheap these days, and am I right in saying the PS4 can play PS2 disks?

I've never properly played a Lego game, but I think I'll start off with a Star Wars one, they do look so fun and I love the vibes they give off!

Am I right in saying a collection from episode 1 to 6 was released on Switch not that long ago?

Looking forward to what you have planned! :D

"Welcome!"

It's so great to see the Retro Club Weekender back here in GR again and I want to give a huge shout out to our man The Doom Spoon for providing the impetus and enthusiasm to get this show back on the road. We reckon that there is gonna be some terrific stuff posted here each week by GRcadians and we believe that the thread will also act as a kinda reference for looking back at pages of cool gaming stuff over the coming months and years.

Just a reminder that this thread is for everyone and all retro video gaming systems; as we say in the opening thread, it's not a clique or elitist so feel free to join in. And, hey, why not post a comment if you've seen something you enjoy?

Image

Building on the great posts already made for this Weekender, I've decided to pick out a few Nintendo DS games from my collection and share them here. I spent a while dragging them out from the back of a cupboard... let's take a closer look.

I think I see a puzzle in this!

I'm gonna start with the Professor Layton series. Now obviously these aren't rare or expensive but they are fantastic games. I hugely enjoyed playing through these adventures, with the storyline, characters and - of course - lots of puzzles, proving to be a potent mix. They suited the DS so well with the dual screens and touch aspects feeling so good. I think that Lost Future is my personal favourite!

Image

Really Portable Games

These two RPGs are highly regarded and quite sought after now. I never played Chrono Trigger on the SNES but this transfer to the DS was done done with a high degree of polish; excellent, detailed sprites and some lovely backgrounds. Dark Dawn is a title I have yet to try but I have heard good things - and I only just realised that it was made by Camelot, the folks famous for their golfing and tennis titles!

Image

Way out, man

WayForward are well known for creating excellent 2D games and these two on Switch are terrific examples. Both feature great graphics and very good gameplay. Aliens Infestation was released fairly late in the DS life and commands pretty high prices nowdays. Thor not so much... but it is well worth playing. Oh, and of course, Sega on Nintendo! This still seems amazing to an old 'un such as myself :D .

Image

Cute and cool

I've not played many Kirby games but I do like the character - he/she/it seems so dang neat! Mass Attack and the other title, Okami-Den, both arrived reasonably late on in the DS timeline and were highly polished. That Kirby cover design is marvellous!

Image

Ghosts n' Robotic Furries

Ghost Trick sort of flew under the radar with most folk at the time of release but it is well worthh seeking out and trying; it's a fun and unique puzzler. Solotorobo is one of the last DS games that I bought and I need to play more of it; an initial play revealed a well-made and cool adventure.

Image

Three Dragons

Now I'm gonna say right off that I have not played this trio of Dragon Quest titles yet; I picked each of them up a few months after their respective launches for very reasonable prices. They reviewed well and I'm looking forward to - one day! - playing 'em. I was pretty surprised, when checking earlier today, to find that the top two can now command some high prices.

Image

Emergency!

999 - Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors - is a visual novel / puzzle game that never gained a UK/Europe release and this copy represents my only imported DS title. For those who may not be aware, US versions of DS games have different cases to those in other countries; they are black, thinner and have a kind of tougher plastic. Personally I prefer the chunky, clear cases we are more familiar with but I am pleased to have 999 in my collection.

Image

Now that's a lotta silver

I am not very knowledgeable about Pokemon; I recognise many of the characters and am aware that so many folk around the world love the series, but I have only ever dabbled with the games. I thought that Let's Go was great fun, though, and I plan on returning to that some time!

Anyway, a few years back - around 2011 - my local Morrisons supermarket stopped selling videogames and had a clear out. I noticed that they had a copy of Pokemon Soul Silver on a shelf. It had a lovely box and looked to be in untouched condition; still sealed. I decided to pick it up for the asking price of £19.99. Upon getting it home I noticed that it was the Pokewalker version... pretty neat! I then opened it all up, checked that everything was there, loaded up the cart to make sure it worked, and then popped it away into a cupboard.

Standing by the box.
Image

A wee look at the back.
Image

Open up!
Image

Get everything out!
Image

The walker device is unused and still has the battery tag in it.
Image

Quite a nice package! ( :datass: ).

- - - - - - - - - -

That's it for now, GRcadians. I hope that you enjoyed sitting with me as we looked over those titles. What a tremendous system the DS was! I'll be back for future Weekenders but, for now, I'm excited about what things may crop up in this thread over these next few days and where the conversations will take us.

EDIT: Bonus! If you'd like to share love and support for this new Retro Club Weekender initiative, why not fly the flag in your autosig banner? Use this!

Jawa, thank you for your contribution this week, what a wonderful look at some of your DS games! I have Dragon Quest IX myself and played it back in the day when it first come out.

I vaguely remember the game was advertised using Ant and Dec! Either way I had a great time with it but never finished it. I picked up another copy a year or so ago and I plan to do a playthrough once again!

That was an absolute steal for Soul Silver too! I have the same copy but as Heart Gold, it's my original copy which seen loads of action over the years! The box and it's contents has seen 6 moves and as it's cardboard, is showing some wear now. But that's ok because it's wear I've put on it, it's followed me around and so there for its uniquely mine!

I have all the paper work and Pokewalker too, although I did use mine a few times, needs a new battery now!

Prices for this version, complete with box, papers and walker go for ever increasing money these days too!

I have determined what I will be contributing to RCW, I just a caelse of retrieving it from the loft.

Hint: it's not a game.

Check out my YouTube channel!
One man should not have this much power in this game. Luckily I'm not an ordinary man.

Hey, kerr, great to see you sharing stuff from your collection here. Your NES collection sure has grown over the years - you have quite an array of titles now. I particularly enjoyed your Splatterhouse 2 vid; so cool to check out your homemade cover and manual!

Quick aside on TikTok -
I had never used TikTok videos on my tablet before and they seem to work a bit oddly. There is no timeline so I couldn't see how long each vid was, nor move around the timeline. I had totally unrelated vids pop up when touching the screen, too!

I like this idea, Doom! I'm wondering if we may get more responses on Twitter than GR due to the bigger retro gaming audience; and the #retroweekender tag could work well. We'll have to use a lot less text and fewer photos but it could gain a bit more traction. When creating the logo I called it the Retro Club Weekender but perhaps it works better as Retro Weekender? I'll make an updated version tonight to see what we think.

My oh snap my bad! Jawa, you've just blown my mind! Since being on GRcade, I've always called it Retro Weekender, not once did I notice the "club" bit in it! Shows how well my observation skills are! :slol:

I think leaving it as the Retro Club Weekender here on the forum makes sense as that's what it's always been called and it's what people know!

For the purposes of adapting it for social media I feel the tag Retro Weekender works well if you're in agreement?

Yeah, this sounds good, Doom! I just searched Twitter and the #RetroWeekender tag is in use for some other (non-gaming) topics but not too much... I'm sure that, within weeks, we'll have loads of gaming-themed posts taking it over :D  .

I have two more videos here and then that's my entire NES collection up on TikTok... I wont supply links for it but if you look on TikTok there is also pretty much my whole Gameboy/Gameboy Color/Gameboy Advance collection (I don't show the boxed games), my Saturn Collection, My Master System collection , My Vita Collection and my Philips G7000 (Odyssey 2) Collection, some are bigger and go across more videos than others (The Odyssey 2 is only like 15 games , the combined Gameboys who knows how many)

The Doom Spoon wrote:So for the first Weekender, I thought I'd start with something close to my heart, and that's Starwars games on the GameCube!

Great to see this Star Wars collection - there really were some great games in that era! I've always missed out on the Rogue Squadron sequels but I love the first game on N64 and have played a very little of 3 in co-op (which I believe is actually the campaign from the second game redone for two players?). That's on account of me not having a Gamecube, but I did have Lego Star Wars (the first game and the original trilogy as pictured) and Bounty Hunter on PS2 - all of them great! I think the original trilogy might still be the peak of the modern style of Lego games, in part because it does the whole no dialogue thing which later Lego games have stopped doing.

The Doom Spoon wrote:Moving on, I wanted to highlight a game I loved so much, but doesn't seem to get the recognition in the Star Wars game community, and that's Bounty Hunter!

I agree with this! Bounty Hunter is unfairly derided in my opinion, I'm glad to see someone else sticking up for the game. The coruscant levels are my highlight from what I remember just for that setting, having people going about their daily lives as you scan around looking for any with bounties on their head - it works well. I think it'd actually be a good fit for a Hitman style game reimagining...

What I think the GC missed out on of the same era was Star Wars Battlefront (II especially). That's my all-time favourite Star Wars game and it's a shame it wasn't on the Gamecube.

The PS4 can't play PS2 disks, but Bounty Hunter was released on PS4 as a downloadable PS2 classic. In fact Limited Run Games did a physical release of Bounty Hunter on PS4 which I even bought!

Two more of my favourite DS games! Ghost Trick is fantastic and I agree completely more people should check it out. Solatorobo is probably even more niche but I enjoyed it a lot, especially for the back half of the game which escaltes in JRPGness!

Now that is a great buy, especially as you still have it basically as-new. I'd guess that must now be one of the more expensive games in your collection?

Definitely, Orange, I too admire WayForward - they're masters of sprites! - with Infestation being a great Aliens game that was built to suit the machine. Thor has some pretty basic scrolling beat-em-up gameplay but the graphics and animation are very good for the console; in particular, there is some nice use of dual screens to create a single "full" screen at some points.

I did recall you mentioning that you'd enjoyed Ghost Trick! It's good to see some innovation in the puzzle genre and it's certainly a great title to try out. I only briefly dabbled with Solotarabo but, as a late DS title, it did show signs of being very polished.

I was a bit surprised by it, Orange. Looking at recent sales on eBay, it should be around £225+. I *think* that Knuckles Chaotix on the 32X remains my most valuable - maybe around £300. It's not a particularly difficult game to find but it's popular and getting tougher to pick up in good condition. Plenty of N64 titles are at silly prices now - even "not really rare" titles such as Paper Mario and Resident Evil 2 - but the demand is high. It can be the more obscure games that command perhaps surprisingly high prices; In the Hunt for PS1 could easily reach around £200.

I've been away from the collecting (buying) scene for a decade now but I was fortunate to get some stuff before then. One of the last titles I picked up around 2011 was a boxed, complete Mega Turrican on the Mega Drive. It was £40 (equivalent to £50 in 2021) but goes for £180+ today. Older stuff such as the 8 and 16 bit computer titles from the 80s and early 90s appear to be pretty hot right now; although, as ever, condition and rarity are key. I never buy games as an investment or to sell, though - I just enjoy the videogames scene and collecting.

...oh, and that that last couple of paragraphs wasn't a boast / flex / being a banana-split thing! I'm just as happy to hold and look over some of my - for example - comparatively worthless DS games (such as the Professor Layton titles I posted) as I enjoy them just as much!
