"Welcome!"It's so great to see the Retro Club Weekender back here in GR again and I want to give a huge shout out to our man The Doom Spoon for providing the impetus and enthusiasm to get this show back on the road. We reckon that there is gonna be some terrific stuff posted here each week by GRcadians and we believe that the thread will also act as a kinda reference for looking back at pages of cool gaming stuff over the coming months and years.
Just a reminder that this thread is for everyone and all retro video gaming systems;
as we say in the opening thread, it's not a clique or elitist so feel free to join in. And, hey, why not post a comment if you've seen something you enjoy?
Building on the great posts already made for this Weekender, I've decided to pick out a few Nintendo DS games from my collection and share them here. I spent a while dragging them out from the back of a cupboard... let's take a closer look.
I think I see a puzzle in this!I'm gonna start with the Professor Layton series. Now obviously these aren't rare or expensive but they are fantastic games. I hugely enjoyed playing through these adventures, with the storyline, characters and - of course - lots of puzzles, proving to be a potent mix. They suited the DS so well with the dual screens and touch aspects feeling so good. I think that Lost Future is my personal favourite!
Really Portable GamesThese two RPGs are highly regarded and quite sought after now. I never played Chrono Trigger on the SNES but this transfer to the DS was done done with a high degree of polish; excellent, detailed sprites and some lovely backgrounds. Dark Dawn is a title I have yet to try but I have heard good things - and I only just realised that it was made by Camelot, the folks famous for their golfing and tennis titles!
Way out, manWayForward are well known for creating excellent 2D games and these two on Switch are terrific examples. Both feature great graphics and very good gameplay. Aliens Infestation was released fairly late in the DS life and commands pretty high prices nowdays. Thor not so much... but it is well worth playing. Oh, and of course, Sega on Nintendo! This still seems amazing to an old 'un such as myself
.
Cute and coolI've not played many Kirby games but I do like the character - he/she/it seems so dang neat! Mass Attack and the other title, Okami-Den, both arrived reasonably late on in the DS timeline and were highly polished. That Kirby cover design is marvellous!
Ghosts n' Robotic FurriesGhost Trick sort of flew under the radar with most folk at the time of release but it is well worthh seeking out and trying; it's a fun and unique puzzler. Solotorobo is one of the last DS games that I bought and I need to play more of it; an initial play revealed a well-made and cool adventure.
Three DragonsNow I'm gonna say right off that I have not played this trio of Dragon Quest titles yet; I picked each of them up a few months after their respective launches for very reasonable prices. They reviewed well and I'm looking forward to - one day! - playing 'em. I was pretty surprised, when checking earlier today, to find that the top two can now command some high prices.
Emergency!999 - Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors - is a visual novel / puzzle game that never gained a UK/Europe release and this copy represents my only imported DS title. For those who may not be aware, US versions of DS games have different cases to those in other countries; they are black, thinner and have a kind of tougher plastic. Personally I prefer the chunky, clear cases we are more familiar with but I am pleased to have 999 in my collection.
Now that's a lotta silverI am not very knowledgeable about Pokemon; I recognise many of the characters and am aware that so many folk around the world love the series, but I have only ever dabbled with the games. I thought that Let's Go was great fun, though, and I plan on returning to that some time!
Anyway, a few years back - around 2011 - my local Morrisons supermarket stopped selling videogames and had a clear out. I noticed that they had a copy of Pokemon Soul Silver on a shelf. It had a lovely box and looked to be in untouched condition; still sealed. I decided to pick it up for the asking price of £19.99. Upon getting it home I noticed that it was the Pokewalker version... pretty neat! I then opened it all up, checked that everything was there, loaded up the cart to make sure it worked, and then popped it away into a cupboard.
Standing by the box.
A wee look at the back.
Open up!
Get everything out!
The walker device is unused and still has the battery tag in it.
Quite a nice package! (
).

That's it for now, GRcadians. I hope that you enjoyed sitting with me as we looked over those titles. What a tremendous system the DS was! I'll be back for future Weekenders but, for now, I'm excited about what things may crop up in this thread over these next few days and where the conversations will take us.
