GRcade Retro Club Weekender 2.0 - Every Friday to Monday!

Hey, GRcadians

The Retro Club Weekender is back! Myself and jawa have resurrected the idea and, after a bit of spit and polish, it is now open here in the forum!

The Weekender proved to be a tremendously popular topic before and we hope that you'll all enjoy taking part, both sharing photos of your gaming stuff and commenting on what others have posted.

How does it work?

> Although it's called the Weekender, each event runs from Thursday through Monday each week so that people who are working or away on the actual weekend can join in as well.

> The events are definitely not "hardcore" or "elitist"; it's just as cool to see someone post a photo of their five loose Mega Drive cartridges as it is to see someone post a complete set of sealed N64 games.

> It would be an idea to perhaps post just a few items from your collection each Weekender rather than, say, thirty photos encompassing everything on the first Weekender... save stuff for future events!

When does it start?

The first weekender will run from Thursday 15 July to Monday 18 July inclusive; and then on the same days each subsequent week. The weekenders will generally be "free-format" i.e. post what you want; but there may be special, specific consoles or games events in future weekenders that we'll let you know about beforehand.

Thanks for your support and we're looking forward to you sharing photos and stories about your retro gaming gear!

Doom and Jawa

PS The definition of "retro" gaming can vary from person-to-person but we suggest that anything pre-console generation 8 (i.e. before 2012) could be classed as retro as that's almost ten years ago. But hey, make your own definition if you wish to!

Bonus! If you'd like to share love and support for this new Retro Club Weekender initiative, why not fly the flag in your autosig banner? Use this!

Doom, nice one, dude! I'm looking forward to seeing what retro gaming stuff folk share here. The previous Weekender was a lot of fun and it feels like time to get some of that energy going again.

I'm excited for the first Weekender starting next Thursday, 15 July :toot: .

Lovely to see interest for the Weekender is still here! :D

I believe if I'm right, Jawa said he's working on a shiny brand new signature badge for this thread so worth looking out for it! ;)

I'm not sure if there's a way to embed the videos into the forum Kerr, but if not feel free to share the links to the videos! :D

With some very fortuitously coincidental timing, my wife's dad has just said to me "I found these old games in the loft, don't suppose you'll be interested but I thought I'd check..."

Not a massive haul but I'll get them working and post them! :D

I like the sounds of this (and have a room dedicated to my retro tat), so this seems like a good opportunity to pimp it. I wlll wait and see what others post to get a feel for the format.

Now, the important bit - how do i upload a photo to this forum? Do i still have to get it hosted somewhere, and if so, where would you recommend?

Use imgur. Upload it as a private picture (so it doesn't get posted on their pages) and just use the link to it here with the image tags.

I'm going to have a rummage in my big-box-of-retro-stuff this evening and see what gets pulled out. Brace yourself for something underwhelming

Don't think I ever posted in the last thread, but now I'm getting my retro collection together it seems a good time! That's still in progress though and most of my games are still with my parents, so for now here are two versions of one of my favourite games - Skies of Arcadia. Both second hand as I never had a Gamecube or Dreamcast during their time! I picked up and played Legends first on my Wii and only later got the original Dreamcast release which I haven't yet played through properly.

Point of interest - two of the four screenshots on the Gamecube version are recreations of the same screenshots on the Dreamcast version! You can also see a sticker for the (I think now defunct) gaming store the Dreamcast version was once sold through. I got the game at CEX in Reading so it was probably the Tilehurst branch it passed through.

Not pictured - disc 1 of the Dreamcast version. I always like multi-disc games! Crazy how in the two years between releases the game shrunk from two CD-sized discs down to one Gamecube mini disc.

The manuals
Image

The Dreamcast manual is really chunky because the whole thing is replicated in several European languages. The Gamecube manual is thinner because the majority is only in English - it just has one page "quick start" guides in others. The Gamecube manual is my favourite for other reasons though...

Contents pages

The DC manual is pretty thorough in covering how to play the game, as you'd expect, but the GC manual has pages just for game lore. Pages like these:

Characters and The World

It's exactly this kind of content that makes me miss manuals in modern games.

Bonus "Great New Games in 2001"

Thought this might be interesting too - some promo material still in the Dreamcast box. Lots of number 2 sequels in 2001 it seems! Also fun to see some games listed as "Coming soon..." that never did see the light of day on Dreamcast - games like "Jet Set Radio 2". Of course the Jet Set Radio sequel that did come to be was Jet Set Radio Future on the Xbox. To think what future the Dreamcast could have had!
