kerr, you're really posting plenty of great stuff in the Weekender! The GBC Pokémon version was a good find and it looks to be in decent shape. You may already know, dude, but you can order replacement battery covers off eBay. My colour recognition isn't great and I'm not sure if you needed a dark blue or purple one. Here's a search for the purple one, but blue is easy to find, too.

Thanks buddy. Yeah I had ordered a replacement one for another GBC I had that was missing its cover. I might do it with this one or I might see if I can steel the back of a genuine machine that color to make the Pokemon better and then order that a replacement.

When I saw the GBC it was in a glass cabinet and the price was on the underside so I bent down and saw £19.99 but thought that cant be right it must say more maybe £79.99 or something so I was very happy that it actually was that cheap.

Nothing beats a good gaming magazine!

This week's Weekender is a tad different... I'm featuring something retro inspired!

Image

This is Sega Mania, it's a brand new print magazine dedicated to.. well... SEGA!

Each issue gives us a "retrospective" look back at the company, it's hardware and games, starting with the year 1990!

Image

It's so good to see print media still seeing plenty of support, and long may it continue!

Before the internet was so easily accessible, this used to be the way you'd find out about new games and get hyped for them, if they were featured, they were probably worth playing!

Image

Did you get gaming mags back in the day? If so, which were your favourites?

Cube magazine is one I remember very fondly. I used to take my copy into school, and me and my mate (the only other person with a cube in my year!) used to gawk over all the new games featured!

Image

If you're interested in checking them out, Issue 1 is still available to purchase and issue 2 can be preorderd on their website!

That looks great Doom! Used to love a good gaming mag. Obviously I read a lot of ONM in the wii days, before that we would read OPSM (still got a bunch of demos!) and before that we had a fair few issues of NOM.

I've never been big into Sega, I'm a little too young and only have a pre-owned Dreamcast, but that does look a fun read.

Cheers Orange! The Mega Drive was my first ever console so Sega has a lot of nostalgia for me! It's great being able to relive them in their heyday through this new publication!

I've always found it funny that there are two Nintendo publication with such similar names, and the fact their both official!

Oh, man, this is really good, Doom! Building on our Twitter chat, this looks to be very cool and I love how fan-made gaming mags are replacing the gap left by the pro publishers. Sega is a good area to focus on with lots of history and games to cover.

I used to be a huge fan of gaming mags. There have been so many I enjoyed over the years, especially during their 80s and 90s heyday. My favourites include Computer & Video Games, Zzap! 64 ( <3 ), Commodore User, Popular Computing Weekly (amazingly geeky and, even as a thirteen-year old, I loved it!), Mean Machines, ST User, Amiga Format, Amiga Power, Commodore Format, Sega Power, Nintendo Official Magazine, PlayStation Power, Xbox World (Computec Media), Official Nintendo Magazine, gamesTM, Retro Gamer... they all provided brilliant content.

I have started buying the new Play magazine - replacing Official PlayStation - from Future and, four issues in, I'm enjoying it. Will post about that later. For fan mags, I did subscribe to Freeze64, a C64-focused A5-size mag published every six weeks or so and the work of just one guy. It's very good!

My submission for this week is something I really should've posted before, but it's in a cupboard at my dad's so this has been my first opportunity to photograph it:
Image This was given to my sister by one of her friends in the early nineties as she had a clear out. Not sure what the hole in the side of the polystyrene is for. It looks like a AA battery but the G&W takes button ones. Could be a wrist strap but there doesn't seem to be a hole on the machine for that. Could be a curio of box production!
ImageImageImage The kick stand in full effect...Image
Top manual lore as well
Image

More manual highlights (sorry for orientation!)

That is lovely. The nostalgia hits hard seeing that, as there were a few people who had game and watch at primary school, so we'd all play them in a little group at lunch time.

Great stuff, Dowbocop! The Game & Watch series was terrific; I love how well-made the units were. Your one looks to be in good nick and it's nice to have the packaging.

Here's my first entry for the week.

Up first, touching on one of last week's themes, the best darn rasslin' game there ever was.

Image

No Mercy CIB! So many incredible memories of this game, so many legendary local multiplayer moments. So many triple threat ladder matches where the ladder was tipped over just as someone was taking the final step the grab the briefcase.

The cover features The Rock, presumably smelling whatever it was he was always cookin'.

Image

The story mode in this game is absolutely brilliant. All the different weight classes are represented and mostly follow events that had recently taken place in the WWF within the year prior to release. You are also able to take different paths so that each experience chasing each belt is different.

Image

This is the original version of the game with the blood intact. Sadly it also means that it has the save game glitch, but my original copy from back in the day was also an original pressing and it never glitched once. Even after I saved up $500,000 to buy the Ho from the Smackdown Mall.

Second entry.

Image

The first issue of N64 Mag that I ever bought. Such a brilliant, well-written and witty magazine. As you can see, the big thing this issue was the review of OoT.

Image

Great content all over the place; as indicated on the cover, this issue is a whopping 140 pages, but it's all top quality.

Image

I used to obsessively pore over this double-page spread. Mostly to track the release dates for upcoming games I was interested in. It was also handy that they used to include £5 vouchers for GAME.

Image

The possibly dubious score of 95% for Turok 2. One of the few scores awarded by N64/NGC that I strongly disagreed with.

Image

Skill Club! How many challenges can you lay claim to have beaten?

Kerr, could I make a special request please? I'd love to see your sealed Pokemon Snap! Probably worth >£1000 at the moment.

Also, have you considered flogging some of your duplicates to fund the games you are missing?

Drum, I'm glad to see you here and slammin' down your titles onto the canvas! Nice to have a boxed copy of this classic game and your chat about the original and re-release versions has made me wonder about mine. I have a boxed copy but I don't know which version... I'll need to check this out.

Ooh! Lovely to see such a great mag here and fun to hear about it being your first issue purchased. I was buying Nintendo Official Magazine at this time and remember the Ocarina review in that... the mags were going crazy for it! Did you manage to get a copy of the game that Christmas, Drum?

Guys, the game has arrived already :o :toot: . It feels good to get a retro game... how nice it is to get a manual, too! The game is in good nick - the only blemish being a small indentation on the back of the case. Thanks again for the heads-up; I just gotta setup my PS3 sometime :-).

I hadn't forayed into Zelda at that point in time, so no. I only played OoT for the first time in 2005 via the Collectors Edition on GameCube. :o

I bought that issue because I knew an N64 bundle had been bought for me for Christmas and a then school mate recommended the magazine to me.
