Surely I wasn't the only person to have read this article to have thought: "Quick, to GRcade!" (where's KK when you need him?)

"The Love Food Hate Waste campaign has a fairly definitive A-Z of food storage on its website, full of interesting titbits such as “tucking in” your mushrooms under a tea towel in the fridge. Adorable."

Stretching the definition of "interesting" to the limit there, but then comes the critical information.

“Storing it in the right place keeps your food fresher for longer – and it saves you money,” says Helen White, an adviser at Love Food Hate Waste. “If you’re keeping bread in the fridge, it will go stale quicker; it needs to be in the cupboard or a bread bin. If you keep your apples in the fruit bowl, they will go wrinkly quicker. Store apples in the fridge – you’ll be amazed at how long they last.”

Sadly, it provides no advice on whether you should keep toilet rolls in the fridge.

What kind of imbecile would even consider keeping it in the fridge in the first place?

I only keep bread in the fridge when it's in sandwich form, otherwise... what the strawberry float? Bread in a fridge?!

I would never do that. It’s pretty gross to keep it next to your toilet paper.

I think you all need to shut the strawberry float up because I put my bread in the fridge and it lasts way longer. Absolute truth, never mind what these morons say.

Every time this topic comes up it always seems to be a topic full of people agreeing that bread should never go in the fridge. There never seems to be any sociopaths suggesting that it should in the first pla- Oh hi Buff!

It lasts longer in the fridge, aye, but there's no doubt that it loses the softness of room temp bread if kept in the fridge too long. (Though it also has to be said that that doesn't matter if you toast the bread.) So yeah, while I continue to keep my own personal everyday bread in the fridge (I'm not fussy as to the quality of mass produced wholemeal bread), any artisanal or small batch loafs, such as Asda's salt and pepper bread , and any bread I buy for other people, I now keep outside of the fridge as I know that's what the majority of people prefer.

Stale bread is not the same as off bread.

Putting it in the fridge just speeds up the removal of water from the bread, so it dries it out and you're left with a less-soft slice. That makes it last longer.

We tend to put our bog-standard "bread for toast" in the freezer but keep nicer bread (for soups and sandwiches etc) in the cupboard.

Ah well, sounds rubbish either way.

Freezer for toast bread, ambient for sandwich bread.

My folks keep it in the fridge and yes it's okay but the bread soon looses it's softness quick.
