I've just got a PS4 - what to play?

My friend has very kindly donated his OG PS4 to me as he's got a PS5. To be honest I barely played my PS3 so there's a lot of stuff I've missed out on. I'm a PC gamer mainly so I have played a lot of the big multi-format games that I'm interested in, so I'm mainly looking to get on the classics that I've missed

My current list:
Spider-Man and Miles Morales
Roundabout (I think that's it, the one where you're a limo driver and there's loads of FMV)
RDR 2
God of War series
Uncharted series
The Last Guardian (hoping it's more Ico than SOTC)
Dark Souls

Are there any other classics I should be getting on? Is PS+ worth it for PS4 now or is it all PS5?

Nice one on entering the mighty world of PS4, Dowbocop... there are *tons* of good games to try!

I'd recommend giving Mad Max a go; it's an openworld brawler and explorer with great graphics and really chunky fighting action.

I hugely enjoyed The Last Guardian but opinions do vary on it - it is clunky and some folk maybe don't enjoy the challenge of getting Trico to do what you want, but I thought it was outstanding.

Don't bother with ps+. There's a sale on ps store right now, check it out. Lots of savings to be had.

RDR2 is a masterpiece but really long so do that one first or last.

PS+ is one of those things that accumulates value the longer you’ve been with it, if you’re just starting on PS4, PSNow is by far the better deal and should offer you absolutely insane value for money.

As for what to play that you didn’t mention:
The Last of Us1&2
Persona 5
Final Fantasy VII Remake
Judgment
Ghost of Tsushima
13 Sentinels
Ratchet & Clank
Journey
Wipeout Omega Collection
NieR Automata and Replicant
Horizon Zero Dawn
Infamous Second Son/ First Light (though this will pale in comparison to Spider-Man)
Resogun
Nioh 1&2
Odin Sphere Leifthrasir
Until Dawn
Bloodborne

Ico absolutely blew my mind, but I thought SOTC was a pretentious, unfinished mess. I'll see what reviews say about TLG!

Now let's open a can of worms: I haven't seen any Mad Max films...

It never seems to go on sale on PC and I thought my machine might struggle. It's on sale now I think so I might get that and then work through it as I've wanted it since launch. My friend has some old physical games that he didn't bring yesterday so by the time I've got through that I might have lucked into a small library...

I thought they were the same thing, PS Now is like the EA Vault which is what I'm after...

REMNANT- From the ashes. A more action souls game with the emphasis on dodging attacks rather than Leroy Jenkinsing your way through.

I'd second Ghost of Tsushima, easily my favourite game of the generation

Sticking to strict PS exclusives I'd recommend:

- The Last of Us 1/2
- Uncharted 1-4
- Gravity Rush 1/2
- Tearaway Unfolded

You shouldn't play TLOU2 without playing the first game, and they are easily the best exclusives PS has to offer for my money.

Uncharted can be played in any order really, there is continuity but it's not hugely important and the first and third games are weaker - you might not get on with the first game so I'd start with either 2 or 4. 4 shifts tone with more downtime and variation in its gameplay. I've not played Lost Legacy, it's supposed to be really good.

Gravity Rush has a more niche appeal but they are both brilliant games, especially aesthetically and in world-building. 2 remains one of my favourite looking games of all time. They aren't JRPGs, but I think fans of those are the people who will most likely enjoy them.

Tearaway I have still only played on Vita, but I'm assured it translates onto PS4 well enough to still be very charming. It's a 3D platformer with lots of experimental and playful mechanics based around player input.

Relaxing the exclusives rule only slightly I'd go to Death Stranding and Journey as games that were PS exclusives but have since come to PC.

There are clear influences from both games but it's more like Ico on balance as it's a puzzle game with an AI partner escaping from a castle-like location. SOTC's influence is most obvious in the way you climb and hold on to Trico (the AI creature) but it's contextually different to SOTC - you're not trying to kill him!

I think it's fantastic, but I think both Ico and SOTC are (although my preference is with Ico as probably the best of the three). I think the biggest divider of opinion is whether you find the AI lifelike and enigmatic or frustrating and fiddly.

"Enigmatic"... what a *fantastic* way of putting it! . I think some folk may well veer towards "the f@cking thing won't do f@cking anything!", but I loved it  .

I'd go further and say I also found myself thinking "the f@cking thing won't do f@cking anything!" - but I liked that!

The magic is in where the problem feels like it lies - do you feel like you are getting frustrated with the game's programming for not adequately translating your input, or do you feel like you are getting frustrated with a creature called Trico who is challenging to communicate with because its a living creature. For me it was definitely the latter, that illusion was so well crafted. It wasn't the game designer's fault for me struggling to execute a puzzle solution, it was mine for not being able to communicate with this creature - and that is actually part of the intended experience!

...yeah, absolutely, dude - I loved the experience and the game is definitely in my all-time top ten.

I should really get back to The Last Guardian, I can't remember why I left it. I don't remember being overly frustrated with it so it probably wasn't that. Maybe it didn't grab me in the same way Ico and SotC did.

I've got The Last Guardian but haven't even started it yet, it's just never quit made its way to the top of my backlog!

If you don't have it on PC then Days Gone.
