It's marvellous to hear that you set off on the right path, Vermilion, with a fantastic experience of gaming on a range of classic computer systems!

I think i must have been about 2 or 3 when mum & dad bought my older brother a ZX Spectrum + (the one with the rubber keys and rainbow stripe, and just like the song, they bought it to help him with his homework) and i remember being sat on the carpet watching him playing Horace Goes Skiing.

Later, when he got an Amiga (the famous Batman pack bundle) around 1990, he gave me his Spectrum + 2, and i used that (still have fond memories of Formula Grand Prix AKA F1 Manager) along with the odd session on the Amiga until i was 10 and for that christmas, i was given a Megadrive along with the first two Sonic games. Didn't stop there either as my birthday followed 3 months later and by then i wanted the newly released Super Mario Kart and so i was given a Super NES along with Kart, Mario World, and Mario Paint.

Ever since, my console roster has been (in order), Megadrive, Super NES, Game Boy, Mega CD, PS1, N64, Game Boy Color, Dreamcast, Game Boy Advance, PS2, Gamecube, DS, XBox 360, Wii, PS3, and now PS4.

As i now only have 1 console in use as opposed to several, the amount of games i play has dropped (mainly due to the cost and a lack of spare time), but as i said in my previous post, i've no intention of stopping and when eventually my PS4 decides to wave a white flag and stop working, i will look to invest in a PS5.

After the sonic twitchcast chat, I was thinking:

There's something nice about the fact I still have (and treasure) my original game stuff. I have our old Amstrad, which I think of as being my first entry point to games, but was actually my dad's work computer in the navy! The games on it were actually his, and i really remember him and his mates playing Daley Thompson's decathalon while we had a barbecue when I was really young. I still have that game too!

When they got me my megadrive and sonic 2, who would have known that I'd still be paying it when I was in to my 40s. I'll have that until the end probably, I wonder who will end up with it?

I plan to stop watching TV when I'm 34, stop reading at 48, and stop playing games at 57.

Great memories, Vermi! I wonder if it was the "+" model or the original that your brother had? The original had the rubber keyboard whilst the "+" model had the "square" keys. Here's a few pics:

Wow! Ten/Eleven years old and you owned a Mega Drive *and* a SNES? That was good going, man!

Terrific stuff! I love hearing old gaming stories like this. It's amazing to think that your dad was using an Amstrad CPC in the navy :o . You may already know, but there was a game called "Navy Moves" on the Amstrad (and other 8-bit micros); a pretty tough shooter published by Dinamic/Ocean:

It was definitely the + model, but i think the keys on it may have still been a bit rubbery as i do remember my brother talking about rubber keyboards (though maybe he was simply referring to the older model).

Anyhow, he ended up with a +2 (which eventually became mine, and i had it in my possession until a house move in 2005) as i was watching him play on the original one day, only to look down and see smoke streaming out of the power brick.

Yep, the Super NES was my 11th birthday present, used to have the two consoles set up side by side on the table. I have some photos of my old console setups somewhere, if i do manage to track them down at some point i'll scan them for posting either here or in the retro discussion topic (depends largely on how long it takes me to fish them out).

Gemini73 wrote:I still enjoy gaming, but the draw isn't nearly as strong as it was in the past. Weeks can pass, even months, where I'll not play anything at all. That said this last month has seen me gaming a lot more.

Is it an age thing? Probably.

That is me right now where i am with gaming earlier in the year i re-bought Manhunt for PS4 and i played that more then the other games i have for PS4 and i have completed it and i enjoyed replaying thru it. A few weeks back i got Turok 1 & 2 currently halfway thru Turok and im enjoying playing it again more so then modern games. Is it because its straight forward and not complicated its a pick up and play game straight to the point.

Take the Last Of Us 2 last time i played that was in July i have not been bothered or in a rush to continue playing it and get it out the way yet i will happily load up Turok 1 & 2 and other times do some races on GT Sport. Am i losing interest in gaming due to getting older work other distractions maybe i'm in no rush to buy a PS5 when its far to expensive and right now no games have my interest. Will the PS4 be the last console i ever buy? Who knows maybe it is
