How do you feel about creating gaming topics here in GR?

So... that "new topic" button. Do you press it? Are you excited about setting up a new thread and getting the chat going? Or maybe you shy away a bit? Perhaps you wonder if you have the post-count to pull it off?

Let's get into our thinking about creating new topics! Please select all of the options that match up to your own experiences. Why not write down words to back up your thoughts, too?

I will start one if I feel its worthwhile but I will kind of wait and see if someone else does it first.

I rarely start topics as I never have worthwhile conversation starters.

I’ll start topics for games that I’m interested in and ones that I think deserve discussion outside of multi topic threads. Also we have a good community so I like to see topics raised with questions that allow everyone to show their opinions

I think Jawa makes so many that it's pointless for anybody else to bother.

I have the fear of starting a topic and it being a total tumbleweed moment.

I prefer to chip into existing topics and questions. I find most of the time there is a topic for what is on my mind and can jump into one of those.

There are some questions that pop up sometimes, but to be honest I tend to research or look into that question elsewhere. Maybe I should create that question here, as others might have the same interest? Case in point here was a racing game/steering wheel topic as I was looking at getting into assetta corsa and the whole modding of it.

I'd like to create topics but it is increasingly evident that I am not a human being capable of original thought. Moreover any interest I have is generally covered by some already existing containment thread

this is still better than on SONM and ONM, where I did create topics sometimes and they were uniformly terrible
except for the low effort christmas/new years threads I did for a few years, I still think that was fun

I gave a shorter answer to this earlier but thought id add some more and say something deeper. As I have said more than a few times I am autistic and this rears its head in a few ways, one of them is really struggling to know if people like me or dislike me , I am also a pessimist so I will unless I have very strong proof otherwise presume that everyone hates me and work from there as a base level, this sometimes gets in the way of me either making or replying to topics.

About individual games, I feel like there's an expectation on here that threads will have a hugely detailed OP with a bunch of stuff in the title, every piece of PR talk currently extant, and a couple of trailers; and also updates to the title as required. Other people have the enthusiasm/time to do that better than me. Also they don't spend ages trying to think up a rubbish pun for the title. That said, if there's a game I want to talk about and no thread, I'll make it. I have before.

About broader topics... Honestly I'll probably do them on GNamer first. :shifty:

I'm feeling that some folk would like to make topics but, because they perhaps haven't done so before, they need a little confidence boost to get them going.

A few of these thoughts could hopefully help people to dive in:

> Don't fear that tumbleweed moment! It will happen at some point... but it's no big deal! Sometimes things just don't take off.

> Consider phrasing your topic in a way that encourages people to want to join in. For example, present things in a way that allows people to share and expand upon their own experiences, such as "What was the first game system you bought and when did you get it?" rather than, say, "Did you have a NES?".

> If you're creating a game thread, once you've created the first one then you can copy and update the template text for future game threads. This will ensure you have the same core info and bring some consistency.

> Everyone has their own style and will present things in different ways - which is great! Don't be afraid to put your own stamp on things.

> Keep things brief... or at least use paragraphs. Huge walls of text can be off-putting and folk will just skim over it.

> If you've made a thread, respond to the folk who post in it. Interaction is what will encourage others to post and brings life to the topic.

Pretty much straight up ignored 95% of the time, creating any topic (Trading being the exception) would be flogging a dead horse for me.

I made a topic about farting in fridges and now everyone thinks I’m weird. I’m not putting myself out there again.

I used to create loads of topics here and when I did I made sure to update the OP constantly. Problem I find with some of the topic makers they just like to create a topic and leave it to find it's own way in the forum.

It really bothers me when I see a topic of a game that has been out over a year and the title says demo out now or released on *****

If you want to be a topic creator of a new game keep that topic as good as you can make it!

Nowadays I pretty much leave new topics for others, I don't have the same time I used to and I am also not here as much as I would like.

That expectation is what puts people off making topics, it doesn't need to be there. Topic owners can be changed on request or you can just ask for a title update if it matters

Indeed. A Topic is not meant to be a Marathon.

I often have ideas for topics, but the effort to make a good one puts me off, especially as no bugger will read it!

If I've been up to something like my adcade or gameboy, then I'll document as I go and then post that, but I generally can't be bothered with topics and would rather just post in other ones.

I was talking specifically about game topics. I know that in the past people have jumped in and created a topic just to be that person who owns the topic. They only make the topic with little information and never update it, it’s lazy! Normally these topics are just after the announcement or during E3 and more often than not the same person creating multiple topics. I would rather someone who is dedicated to the game create the topic and I’m sure if there wasn’t this rush to get a topic created we would have better topics with better OP where a fan had time to put something together.

Rant End.
