Imagine moaning about gaming costs! Games should cost £225 now because I paid £70 for Turok! They're cheap! Just get another job, lol!

Is the cost of living impacting your gaming spend?

Everything seems to be going up in price and some of us may be noticing this in our pockets. It can be pretty tough!

How is this impacting your spending on video games? Maybe you're having to cut back a bit or are perhaps thinking about doing so? Then again, you may be someone who is raking it in and looking to buy £350 editions of games (not including the game)?

I've cut back a lot; I have mad moments now and again (usually stuff in sales) but, generally, I'm not buying anywhere near as much as I used to.

I'm currently trying to avoid monthly and annual subs, too - which is tough as so many things are going that way. My next cost reduction might be on only paying one console online fee. I'd like to sack off Nintendo Online but that'd mean no Kart or Splatoon.

Having subs makes it harder to easily track how much I'm actually spending versus the "old days" of just buying all games outright. I think I probably have tightened the belt on gaming spending recently though - there have been a few times over the last couple of months where I rejected an impulse purchase that I might have gone through with if it weren't for the current squeeze on funds

I have years of Game Pass stacked for cheap so the crisis hasn't impacted my gaming thankfully.

I'm spending about the same. I don't spend a lot of time gaming, I don't have any subs, and I've (mostly) stopped myself from buying every game I have an interest in when they go on sale, so I only buy a handful of games in a year anyway. I've been playing BF2042 for my multiplayer fix since last year and I generally only buy a new single player game once I've finished and/or lost interest in the last game I bought. There's usually a couple months between each purchase.

This year I've bought:

Dishonored: DOTO @ £12.49
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided @ £2.99 (not yet played)
Outer Wilds @ £19.76
Steam Deck 512GB @ £565.00
Return of the Obra Dinn @ £10.84
No Man's Sky @ £19.99

So while the cost of living crisis has definitely stopped me from making some larger purchases, games are a small enough expense to slip under the radar for me. I was going to put together a mini PC for the living room, since I already have half the components I would need left over from upgrading my desktop last year. But a combination of cost of living and getting a Steam Deck has put me off the idea, and I'm just waiting for the Steam Deck Dock now instead.

Sure has had an impact. I really fancied buying Sniper Elite 5 but cost of living means I'm probably gonna have to put that on a bargain list as I just can't justify spending £40+ on a game at the moment.

There is a positive to that though, in that I'm now actually going to play some of the games in my backlog! Almost completed Spider-Man on PS5 and I've really enjoyed playing that. Death Stranding might also get to see the light of day  :toot:

I only buy games in deep sales these days. Gone are the days of day one buys unless I really really want to play it

I enjoyed the last option Jawa.

Yeah, so I’m spending about the same, but I buy games on a whim. I don’t really have a fixed gaming pot a week. I’m also finding pc gaming and the various sales good value, especially for picking up older titles.

I’d be cutting back if I was spending £70 a pop and then making sure i get the value out. Only really planning GoW ragnarock for £60.

Where Pc gaming really sucks is hardware. It will be interesting to see how the new graphics cards sell. I’m not convinced many gamers have £1000 for latest cards again, especially if they can’t shift their old ones.

I do too. For me it’s not enough. I still like to buy other games and newer titles or old stuff on steam/epic.

I voted No, I am spending about the same because:

  • I buy only around 5-6 games a year
  • As they come in plastic cases with no manual these days, I buy second hand at a reduced price
  • I don't subscribe to any of the online services

I'm spending a whole lot less on new games. My gaming spend tends to be limited almost entirely now to either the odd Switch game that I really fancy, or the odd retro effort for the N64.

 My friend picked it up and was getting really into it, and I didn't have a game on the go so gave it a shot. It's not really hooked me yet and I've not played for a few weeks so it's in danger of getting dropped if I don't get back into it soon.

While it hasn't really affected my game purchases I did cancel my Steam Deck pre-order. That cash might be more useful later on with how things are going.

Needed a bit more Spider-Man to be *truly* excellent though, wouldn't you agree?

Only bought 1 game so far this year (Two Point Campus), though it does kinda help that there's not been many titles actually coming out (the only other one i would have liked was F1 22).

What with the price of energy these days, I’m more interested in how much the PS5 is costing to run. I suppose in that regard retro gaming would be more economical.

I’m spending about the same because I’m thigh-deep in 3 subscription services which I’m assuming will be enough to tide me over. But a full price game on launch? Not a chance. Not entirely sure I’ll be able to justify it perhaps ever again.
