You certainly can update your choices, Zilnad! It is very tough to select just five... but, yes, you can make use of your "bubbling under" list if you want to!

Reading other responses in here it’s striking to me how few of the more acclaimed titles of the generation I’ve played for any length of time. The highlight of this generation is that it gave me access to a wealth of older games thanks to backwards compatibility. I can now play the vast majority of my favourite games on my Series X while none of them are native to it and that was kind of the same for the Xbox One before it, I mainly play indie titles and remasters now.

5 - Forza Horizon 3 - having played the series I think 3 is the peak of the last generation’s efforts although I think the first is still my favourite. I’ve played so much of these games though, I could probably include any of them.

4 - Crackdown 3 - I absolutely loved this, an unambitious distillation of everything that I wanted in a Crackdown game. The game is limited in ways but did not deserve anything like the hate it got, sad to think there probably won’t be another. Excellent orb hunting stuff!

3 - Mario Kart 8 (Wii U) - replaces the SNES version as my favourite incarnation. I’ve only ever played this locally but played in 4 player with the wife and kids it’s absolutely peerless.

2 - New Super Mario Bros U / Luigi U - I absolutely adored these games, especially the shorter, tougher Luigi challenges. I finished both of these with my brother and found so much enjoyment in the physics of the whole thing. I love how the characters bump up against each other and how later stages make it progressively more difficult for two characters to survive at the same time (no idea how anyone manages all four!)

1 - Overcooked 1 & 2 - played entirely with my wife who is a gamer of limited skill, she is however an outstanding chef. While I’m better at the buttons I can’t help but be impressed when she barks the names of ingredients at me and keeps me working hard. I have never played a game that straddles the euphoria of success and the neck-wringing despair of failure. The game brings out the best and worst of us, if we ever end up getting a divorce, Overcooked will almost certainly be cited as a contributing factor.

Wedgie, that'a great shout! The atmosphere and graphics are great but I haven't played enough of it to include it in my top five. Definitely a bubbler!

Elysium again... it had a slow-ish start but it's getting a few shouts now! Great to see Hitman get a mention as well, Zilnad - the sandbox style of gameplay is ace!

That's an intriguing choice, hamm. As you say, perhaps some folk looked at the game for what it wasn't rather than what it was. It's certainly a game I'd like to try for myself should I get an Xbox.

Heehee! I've heard a few people indicate that the game sure does take relationships to the limit! The game looks to be so frantic and, whilst that's not my personal cup of tea, it's great to see a more unusual game be selected for the top spot :-).

Overcooked is an excellent co-op game. I think playing through both games should be mandatory for all couples before they get married.

Overcooked makes me want to say horrible things to my wife when she accidentally puts a clean plate in the bin or slides off an ice shelf into the sea while carrying a fully cooked fish supper.

In my partner's case it's when something goes slightly wrong and I instantly restart the level without consulting her. Does she not respect the sanctity of trying for three stars!?

Pleasantly surprised to see Mario Kart 8 mentioned a lot. It's not a game I often think about, but the multiplayer is incredibly fun & I played it for 100s of hours. I'd still be playing it now but the Wii U servers are a bit empty, guess most people moved to Switch.

It pretty much perfected Mario Kart in my opinion. The only improvements I can think of would be character-specific weapons (Double Dash 2 when?) and some form of campaign/mission mode.

I must have played over 100 hours on Death Stranding. It’s unique and barmy, and the story isn’t that over complicated once you get past the quirkiness.

I don’t know if I have the stomach to buy the PS5 version though, maybe not for a while as it’s still fresh in my memory.

Yeah, Kart 8 is definitely one of my bubblers, Stuart. We enjoyed many great Kart nights here on GRcade - we used to race every Monday night! - and it was brilliant, frustrating, excellent and infuriating in equal mix  .

I love big-budget games that are a bit different and Stranding sure was unique, Wedgie. I'm definitely gonna get back to it at some point.

That's a huuuge thing to have missed, though.

I'm not playing Switch online, so this became a game I played in sp.

But with no sense of progression, this is a pointless sp game, and therefore fairly pointless in the long term too. Better off playing the campaign on the Wii U version.

When MK9 comes around, I hope it's a proper game.

Well, yep, sure. But Overcooked 1 & 2 is a pointless single-player game. Smash Bros. has single-player modes but it's by far at its best in multiplayer. To go the other way, Mario Odyssey is a bobbins multiplayer game. They're all proper games.

Don't get me wrong, I miss the campaign too! (And by 'campaign' I mean Mario Kart DS' Mission Mode, I didn't play the online missions in the others.) But at the same time, 64, Double Dash, 7 - none of these had campaigns per se. You just ran through the cups. That's what Mario Kart is, one of the best multiplayer franchises that has something, however small, for the solo player.

I guess I find it hard to understand a situation where somebody considers Mario Kart 8 (or Deluxe or whatever) not a 'proper game' because it only has the cups for single-player. For me at least, the single-player campaign is the seasoning of a Mario Kart, not a main ingredient. A Mario Kart with no split-screen mutliplayer? That's not a proper game.

I still haven't finished Disco Elysium and am not sure I ever will. I've really enjoyed it for the most part (certainly not top 5 of the gen enjoyed but still), but I just don't find the actual gameplay can hold the weight of the story and progression often feels too stilted and slow.

Plot twist: they played Until Dawn on a jailbroken Wii U.

Game4forever mode on: Xbox sucks! Lmafo! SDF4ever! You suck.

Actually I played them on the PS5 now. I’m sorry if the X Box doesn’t have a decent first party game line up.
